Going solo on the podcast today to share why I decided to relaunch after a 3-year hiatus.
In 2017, my husband, Shane, and I closed our custom furniture business and retired to Michigan. We’d been thinking about it for a while. Shane is from Michigan, and he often talked about moving back.
Between cancer treatment and moving, podcasting was put on the back burner. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love podcasting, especially the interviews. I really have no good excuse for pausing (okay, 3 years is more like quitting).
But, as you can tell, I’ve rebooted, rebranded, and here’s why:
In the past six months two people I love passed away tragically.
Teresa Sisson
About 6 months ago, we lost a great lady, Teresa Sisson, from a massive heart attack. It was so very unexpected and left her community of friends and family reeling from the loss.
Teresa did something most people never do. She published a book – a collection of her favorite spice recipes. Unfortunately, the book is now out of print. When thinking about how proud I was of her for accomplishing that huge goal, I regretted not interviewing her about it! Thankfully, I did have a chance to interview Teresa back in 2016. What a wise and insightful woman. Go read her interview.

Mark Herdering
Then, in early July, Mark Herdering, author of Hanging Out for a Living, passed from an aggressive form of ALS.
When Mark was diagnosed in the Fall of 2019, we met on Zoom to say the things that people say when they know they will never see each other again.
Mark wanted to ensure the legacy of his book far outlived him. So, I introduced him to Mike Roderick, host of the podcast Access to Anyone. They had a fantastic conversation in episode 196, you are highly encouraged to listen if you want to grow a business by referral.
Interviewing Mark is one of my most favorite podcasts. We recorded it driving on I-45 to the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after a whirlwind few days of workshops and meetups based on his book, Hanging Out for a Living. It’s episode 39 if you want to have a listen.

What’s My Legacy?
As for our family, we have settled into our new life in Michigan. We live in a historic town just minutes from Lake Michigan. A lazy Tuesday at the beach happens often. Our semi-retired life is actually quite active.
Dorothy, our daughter, is 21 and about to head back to college for her senior year. And before you say anything, yes, I am nervous she may be exposed to COVID, and we won’t be able to see her during her quarantine. However, the college has a pretty solid plan in place. All that being said, a mother never stops worrying, right? If you have any suggestions for me on how to cope with this COVID-19 in college thing, you can share it by leaving a comment.
