  • The GBHBL Whiplash - Episode 429: Interview: Chris Martin (Guitars) of Shrapnel
UK heavyweights Shrapnel will release their album ‘In Gravity’ via Candlelight Records on 31st May.
The new album is the sound of rebirth and marks the launch of a new chapter for Shrapnel. Helmed by Swedish super producer Jens Bogren (Sepultura, Opeth, Amon Amarth, Ihsahn) and featuring collaborations with Scott Kennedy (Bleed from Within) and modern shred virtuoso Bradley Hall, In Gravity sees Shrapnel breaking out of their shackles where others have failed, and staking their claim to the British metal throne.

It’s been five long years since “party doom” riff merchants Gurt released their last crushing opus ‘Bongs of Praise’, now on June 7th, 2024, they are set to return with their latest, crushing-ist opus yet, ‘Satan Etc’.
A lot of fun can be had within the company of Gurt, but don’t let that fool you into believing they don’t know how to deliver compelling blasts of heaviness. It might have been a while since we’ve heard from them, but they’re as rambunctious as ever on this brand-new album.

  • The GBHBL Whiplash - Episode 427: Interview: Michelle Malley (Vocals) of Iress
The stalwart Los Angeles-based dream metal band, Iress will release their new album ‘Sleep Now, In Reverse’ on 26th July 2024 via Church Road Records (ROW) and Dune Altar (USA).
Iress’ music is the sonic equivalent of standing on a beach as a tidal wave approaches — aware of certain devastation, yet transfixed and grateful to witness something so terrifyingly beautiful. Drawing inspiration from dark, yet commanding elements including metal, shoegaze, and slowcore, their music presents a cinematic crescendo that swells with intensity and wanes with sorrow.
Iress formed in the musical crucible of Los Angeles in 2010. Frontwoman Michelle Malley, dubbed “the Adele of Doom” by LA music peers, possesses vocals that range from an enveloping smokey warmth to anguished belting, revealing an emotional depth that arrests with unbelievable restraint and control. The band, composed of bassist Michael Maldonado, drummer Glenn Chu, and guitarist Graham Walker, have fostered a chemistry that translates seamlessly to the stage. Their live performances are intentional and dynamic, leaving audiences stunned to silence, moved to tears, and immersed in a satisfying amount of crushing distortion.
Over the years Iress has evolved, always exploring new dimensions in their sound, yet always showcasing Malley’s equally fragile and ferocious vocals. Their intentionality in crafting concise songs, each flickering into existence with magnificent intensity, aligns with nuanced storytelling.
Iress seamlessly weaves layers of crushing guitars, atmospheric textures, and brooding rhythms, creating a sonic tapestry that blends darkness and beauty. With their upcoming LP, Sleep Now, In Reverse, and an international touring schedule in 2024, Iress invites listeners to be transported to a realm where darkness and beauty intertwine.
We spoke to vocalist Michelle Malley about the new album, what it has taken to get to this point, and what made this specific album so special for the band. We also delve into their upcoming live performances, and Michelle takes on the Ozzy Osbone randomised section.

  • The GBHBL Whiplash - Episode 425: Interview: Matt Banks (Vocals) of Harroway
Released April 10th, ‘Heresy’ is the new single from Sydney metalcore quartet Harroway. The track takes a deep dive into the mind of vocalist Matt Banks. It sees Harroway explore a desire to escape from emotional pain and suffering. Banks pleads for relief, projecting undertones of existential questioning and a longing for peace or oblivion. Pulling from his experience living with Hemochromatosis, a disorder where the body creates excessive amounts of iron and becomes toxic, the single comes with a swirling sense of self resignation as Banks grapples with existential crisis, mental anguish, and the search for a meaning.
The scathing single is produced, mixed and mastered by Mark Williamson at Keywork Audio (Inertia, Closure, Revoid) with a chaotic and claustrophobic music video produced and directed by Lexi Markovic.
Harroway offer vulnerable truths through their music and seek to connect with their audiences in a live capacity. The band have been on a national tour supporting metalcore legends Sienna Skies and No Home throughout April and May.
Beginning their journey in 2019, Harroway have jumped from strength to strength since their inception. Unveiling their debut EP 'I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore' last year, the release marked a milestone in the bands career, seeing them sell out their Australian EP launch headliner shortly after it dropped.
The band has since stepped up to support renowned international acts We Came as Romans (USA), Invent Animate (USA), and Crossfaith (JAP) as well as Australian heavyweights Make Them Suffer, Ocean Sleeper, Windwaker and more.
Harroway has grown to boast over a million digital streams, and counting, across various platforms. They sit close to 9,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with their music collecting adds to editorial playlists All New Metal, Homegrown + Heavy and New Blood. They've been heard on the triple j airwaves and community radio stations across the nation and were coined: “One of the best new talents in the scene” by Wall of Sound in 2022.
Harroway remain steadfast in their belief in their craft and seek to share their passion with audiences from all corners. Heresy is available and streaming now on all platforms.
We spoke to vocalist Matt Banks about the new single, delving into the history of Harroway and what has got them to this point. We also talk about the tour, what the future might hold, and Matt answers some random questions from Ozzy Osbone!

  • The GBHBL Whiplash - Episode 424: Interview: Jack Owen (Guitars) of Six Feet Under
Iconic death metal band, Six Feet Under return with their 14th studio album, ‘Killing for Revenge’. A gnarly beast of a record that’s not for the faint-hearted, dishing up nightmare-inducing imagery. It marks the second album that Barnes and guitarist Jack Owen (ex-Cannibal Corpse) have created together since reuniting for 2020’s ‘Nightmares of the Decomposed’.
The current line-up of Barnes, guitarists Owen and Ray Suhy, bassist Jeff Hughell, and drummer Marco Pitruzzella make for a devastating unit. Yet, it’s Jack Owen that has really made the difference, serving as producer for ‘Killing for Revenge’.
Brutal, lyrically visceral and musically dazzling. Six Feet Under are back, and ‘Killing for Revenge’ is out on May 10th, via Metal Blade Records.
We spoke to guitarist Jack Owens about the new album, and how much work he put into it. In particular, looking at his work as producer and how interesting/exhausting that was. Alongside, we also talked about sensational headlines, online trolls, doing what makes you happy, and much more.
