God says things and it began to happen. “Let there be light and there was light.” The bible says “ye have not because ye ask not.” It also says “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” The heart believes, but the heart confesses. We open our mouth for everything else, why not for God? Everything God said in Genesis 1, is still working today. God spoke it and it was. Nothing will become void that God speaks into existence. We release our faith with our mouth. The healing, the blessing, the solution to a need is already there we simply need to speak it into existence by our faith: “I can make it.” “I will make it.” “I won’t do that.” We can talk our selves out of a blessing, or we can talk ourselves into a blessing. Fear keeps many people from realizing their blessing. Bro. Hilton explains that fear is not an emotion, it is a spirit. When the spirit of fear comes over a person, it can paralyze them and inhibit their faith. By speaking our faith out loud, we can combat and defeat the spirit of fear.

When the psalmist tries to explain what happened to him, he stammers and repeats himself. When he remembered the events about which he was writing, he trembled at the situation he was in and what the Lord had done for him. Because of the Lord, he was delivered from the teeth of the enemy. This song proclaims, that if it had not been for the Lord he would have perished. Many others in the Bible have claimed this song, and we too can claim it as our own. No matter what we are facing, we can look to God for resolution. There are forces that are working against us in the world. The enemy hates us because of our freedom, because of our connection to God, because of the promises we can lay claim to. Because he hates us, he seeks to snare and trap us. Even so, we can rely on the promise of “If it had not been for the Lord…” This new song can carry us through any situation. We are here today because God is on our side! We are not perfect, and we may not be where we want to be, but God is still on our side. God is going to make a way out of whatever we are in right now. Because of God, we can escape!

Hughes speculates that perhaps many people are not concerned about the troubling events of our world. Some people do not trouble a world that has lost its morality. However most of us are concerned about the decline of society and it’s affects on our families. Jesus’s advice to his disciples was to continue to believe in God and to hold on to faith. That advice to them is just as valid to us today as we deal with troubled times. God is still in control and has His hand on our lives. Faith is the key to living in troubled times.
