The Brothers Grimm meet Miss Beckwith

The Proper Woman (formerly the nymph of the heather) has only known hard work, grim dedication, family loyalities and duties - together with the beautifully wild scenery of the Island of Corrie. Betrayal, cruelty, loneliness, hard work and sacrifice seem like the price tag on life - until something truly dreadful turns into something inspiring and hopeful. The brothers Grimm have nothing on the magnificent Miss Beckwith, who tells this Cinderella story in a most believable way.

If you are not familiar with Miss Beckwith's tales of the life in the Hebrides, I would highly recommend tracking down THE HILLS IS LONELY, THE SEA FOR BREAKFAST and THE LOUD HALO. Absolutely charming armchair travel!

Cinderella indeed... Brilliant story; hard to put down!

Almost 30, never been married, never been kissed. This lovely woman trudges through her life, with little to no lovely moments. She is betrayed by her brother, humiliated for 10 years by a psuedo husband (still no hugs and kisses) when she finally "takes charge" of her life, and starts a wonderful journey toward love. Too bad there isn't a sequel. I wish Ms. Beckwith's novels were not so hard to find. They're beautiful and inspiring. The review by Mamalind (a favorite reviewer) says it all.

Unbelievable

I found it very hard to believe that a modern police force stuffed with profilers, psychologists etc would send officers to interview a convicted killer. He has nothing to do with the present case and at the end of the day seems to add nothing to the story, except to give Anne a new boyfriend. I have read and very much enjoyed all the Anna Travers books and is difficult for me to say this is not up to the standard of the earlier books - but it just has to be said.

Sleep, Tired Reader

Joanne Harris has written some books I have loved and some I have absolutely loathed - this is definitely in the latter category. I lost all interest well before a quarter of it was finished and only got to the end through sheer determination. I disliked all of the characters and really didn't care what happened to any of them. If you suffer from insomnia it might help because it is so boring; nothing much happens apart from drug-induced fantasies issuing from the brains of several psychologically-flawed and unpleasant characters. The one star is given for the narrator. Steven Pacey tries his best but he can't work miracles.

Brilliant; but macabre.

Talented author. No one wins in this story. I thought too it was a difficult piece for the narrator. He did 100% well. Narrator was a good choice to read this difficult piece. I would like to see authors like D Harkness read some of this author's works to get a feel of what real story writing is about. This story is a bit occult, a bit cliff-hanger, a bit insight into how women could be seen as belongings, & a bit about the predatory nature of the psyche in all of us (male or female).

Lovely Bestiary

Anthropomorphising human emotions and neuroses onto animals may never grow old, but in the hands of David Sedaris, the conceit is heightened into a wonderful, artful group of stories.

What would have made Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk better?

I have other audio books by David Sedaris. The others were pleasing and sometimes laugh out loud. This however was not. The use of other voice actors, lost a lot of the inflection and emphasis on words found in the other readings. It didn't seem to be witty or observed humor at all. In fact rather depressing.I found myself waiting for the next animal to be killed or die in some horrible way. When I was listening that is.

What could David Sedaris have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I have heard the author read some of these stories before and they were a little more palatable.

Would you be willing to try another one of David Sedariss performances?

Yes. His observations have been entertaining in the past.

Any additional comments?

I think that Audible offering the opportunity to get a credit back if you buy a dud, is amazing.

Just plain AWFUL

I have downloaded most of David Sedaris audio books and the rest I have on CD. They have all been most enjoyable. This is not one such audio book. What a awful collection of stories clearly just stolen from real life with people replaced with animals. Too much swearing for no effect. This download comes in two parts. I did not even bother to listen to the second part. This review is for the Squirrel Seeks Chipmunck, and not Audible as a service. Audible is still second to none as far as content and service are concernd.

Great writing but be ready for very dark stories

Bad Behavior

I really think it deserves 31/2 stars but not quite 4. I read "In The Company of Strangers" first so for me the bar was set pretty high. This book didn't reach it. I found the beginning awkward and had to start again after about 5 chapters . I thought I recognized the writing technique, if you will, but never really settled in with it. I did adapt to going back and forth location wise. I never fell in "5 star love" with any of the characters although Julia came close. In spite of recognizing bits of Julia in myself, I found her long suffering "victim" role tiresome and often selfish. Loved her family so she contributed something right. That said, I love the fact that these are characters & situations I as a 60 year old woman can relate to. Love that the book didn't end with Zoe's journey. Being African American with strong feelings about injustices suffered by Indigenous Australians I was totally captured by the subject of race on both sides of he world. So much more but goodness I need a book club discussion!! I am very glad she wrote the book and would absolutely recommend to others. Trying to get my hands on "Gang of Four".

Dissecting a Family

This an excellent character study of members of a family and two friends whose lives collide on two different occasions. I really enjoyed how the author delved into the minds of the characters really giving us a background to the main event. I wish more would have been spent at the end but all in all, I thought this was an excellent read. I found it to be a real page turner. Also, if you're a parent or simply a member of a family you can relate to the feelings and personalities described here. I found it a very engaging story and highly recommend it.

Characters for Each Generation

Jennifer Venderbes has successfully intertwined characters to cross generations with empathy and poignancy. In choosing a family Thanksgiving gathering, she provides the perfect setting to examine each character and the baggage that family members always pack for the holiday. The choice of Thanksgiving as the holiday is unto itself especially thought-provoking as the reader can't help but ask herself, "What are we thankful for, and what should we be thankful for?"

The eldest members of the Olson family, Gavin and Eleanor, bring to life the history of the Boomer generation. They faced the Vietnam War, joined in the flight to suburbia and settled into raising their family, son Douglas and daughter Ginny. Housewife and insurance salesman, their roles become seemingly harmless as parents and guides for the next generation.

Douglas and his wife Denise start down the path to replicate his parents' subdued suburban life. Then, the touches of 911 hit too close to home in their southern CT life and the real estate burst and bust suddenly shift their relationship into role transformations as spouses and parents themselves to twin sons and a young daughter.

Ginny as a contrast to her brother Douglas, sets in motion the events of the day when she uncharacteristically hosts the family's Thanksgiving "feast".
