With glue guns, glitter, twigs, or yarn, the ordinary can become extraordinary...especially at La Pachanga.
Owned by Estrella "Star" Esteban's family, the restaurant has a rep for two things: good food and great art. La Pachanga brings people together - even when it looks like they couldn't be further apart.
One ill-fated evening, Star jeopardizes her family's business, her relationship with her boyfriend, and her future career. To redeem herself, she agrees to participate in a national craft competition, teaming up with her best friend, Ofelia - a secretly troubled mother whose love for crafting borders on obsession -and local celebrity Chloe Chavez - a determined television personality with more than one skeleton in her professional closet. If these unlikely allies can set aside their differences, they'll find strength they never knew they had, and learn that friendship, like crafting, is truly an art form.

Funny, sweet, and sparkly
I went into this book not completely knowing what to expect but knowing I'd love it. I've been a fan of Kathy Cano-Murillo for a while now for her Crafty Chica projects.
It's the sweetest book I've read all year. Kathy writes what she knows. Spanish and Spanglish words and family interaction create characters that are completely believable and remind you of people you know. Her fluency in Craftese is established without a doubt. It starts off being a story about Estrella, a young woman who's enthusiasm gets ahead of her perseverance and the problems she causes by a night out drinking with her cousin. The reporter assigned to do the story about one of those problems is Chloe, an ambitious woman with a plan to become a craft maven even though she truly hates crafts. Estrella's best friend Ofie is a dedicated crafter without much actual talent.
The conflict in the story is realistic, born of misunderstandings and human behavior.
When you reach the end of this wonderfully witty and sweet story you really like all the characters, appreciate them and believe in them. I also loved the romance in here for being realistic and not full of manufactured drama. Too many books seem to be all about what leads up to the wedding, not about the friendship, trust and support necessary to create a lasting loving relationship. This story has two such relationships in it. As someone deeply in love with my husband after over a decade, I find those sorts of things in stories all too rare.
You'll also probably want to cover something in glitter. But all of Kathy's books inspire me that way. When I finished reading this I had a huge smile on my face and promptly recommended it to friends. Wonderful first novel and I'm looking forward to her next one!
Glitter Makes the World Go Round
Note: This review is written by Amy Byrne using my boyfriend's account.
The Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo has been writing books for years instructing her fans in various crafty techniques. Her latest foray into writing strays from the instructional path to a novel, and it's my opinion that she has created a whole new genre of fiction: Crafty Fiction. It's a novel like no other that I've read. Kathy melds her love of crafting with a beautiful story of love, friendship, loss, and hope.
