What did you like best about this story?

The first book in the Marked Men series. Absolutely loved it. Loved the contrast between Rule and Shaw. Loved their history. Rule is is sexy as sin smouldering tattooed bad boy. Shaw is a don't mess with me good girl. Both have troubled pasts centring around Rule's twin brother. It's a wonderful love story with a truly interesting group of guys and girls and I looking forward to reading more.

Beautifully perfect and fiery!!!

Every time I listen to an audio book of this series I find a new favourite! It sends my mind into a spin as to how the rest of this series can get any better. The heart breaking epilogue has me eager to grab Nash ' s story. I have love every minute of this audio, the narrator's were fantastic. They gave an even deeper depth to the story and after reading the paperback that was always going to be a big challenge in my eyes. They brought the passion of this story alive in a way that was mind boggling.

Rome's story will always have a part in my heart, this guy who has always been strong and there for everyone else finally needs someone to care for him if he is only willing to open up. Cora, well I would love her as a bestie she is fiery, colourful and badass. This is an audio that I spent every spare five minutes listening to everywhere.

Absolutely loved it

Oh my.....after my slight disappointment with Jet, Jay's back with Rome Archer, and. WOW! Got to say, I loved this book. I have loved Cora, our little punk rock pixie, since book 1, Rome too to some extent. So yes, this book I loved. Well written (as I have come to expect from Jay Crownover), and a wonderful storyline. How do writers keep coming up with these ideas? I'm in awe of them. Can't wait to see what happens with Nash.

OMG - didn't think it could get any better. Hooked from start to finish. Saint and Nash's story had me in tears. Loved Phil, even though he broke my heart. A story of love, loss and taking what you deserve. The usual gang are all included and it's great to keep up with them. Rowdy and Salem here I come

Secrets and Slow Recovery

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The book is very slow and for me there was not that 'hook' that makes me want to read on. I listened of course, I wanted to complete the story. I found most of the characters well developed; I found my self imagining Am and Maggie as much older because of the way the narrator pitches his voice- about three-quarters of the way Am mentioned that he was 'almost 50' I thought the old man voice the narrator gave him sounded more like 75. I have to say also that the narrator spoke Kenan's lines as though his jaw was permanently clenched. I found this method of speaking very distracting. I feel like the attempt was to sound like someone depressed but it sounded like someone with his mouth wired shut.Narration is so important in an audible book. The story lines, the voices of other characters was fine, even as I mentioned above he gave Am a very old sounding voice.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I found the patience Tress and other family members and friends gave Kenan was well described. I thought the relationship between Luke and Mags was well done even though Mags sounded more like 60 than her probable age of 40+. I also found the theme of secrets and thoughts tamped down were a good representative of that time- the 20s and that culture.

What three words best describe Luke Danielss voice?

Pleasing in the main but he mis-represented his characters who were in their 40s and he over did it with Kenan in his attempt to convey his reticence, his depression and his struggle to 'fit in'. The narrator has a pleasing voice, well paced and enjoyable to listen to except for the issues mentioned above.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No. The book was ruminative and slow and I think the movie would drag.

Couldn't put it down

I thought I had read all of Cynthia Freeman's books but I missed this one. She passed away a few years ago. This story is exactly what you expect from Freeman. Girl with Jewish background marries a man she falls for like a ton of bricks. They go through life with a silent problem hovering over their life until one day it's out in the open. How she and Bill go forward with life is the whole story.

You will enjoy this book and will have trouble putting it down.

The book started out okay but then she went all "Harlequin Romance" on me. I've read some of her other work and didn't find this problem so I'll try another book and hope that her Mills & Boon style of writing was just a passing phase.

Life as a Mormon

I learned a lot about the Mormon faith in reading this book. The lives of these people seem controlled in a very unhappy way. The book is very sad and especially as it relates to the role of women. I found the book fascinating.

An interesting look at how different family members cope with loss and grief. The family's membership of the Mormon Church adds another interesting dimension to the story. I did, however, find the ending a bit unsatisfactory -- left too many unanswered questions.

Good to read a book about the impact of grief and I think the setting shows how faith doesn't make us immune to grief in any form ... reading about my own faith community is always a challenge ... it's difficult not to feel the characters are cliched or stereotyped to appeal to those who like to see the wackyness of religion. Not because the stories of things like dressing up in wedding dresses never happen but more because they feel unusual rather than the norm ... certainly entertaining though. Having said that i l loved al's 'stupid stupid twat' answer to prayer ... that had me laughing myself to sleep .... I think the young folks were more real somehow.

I loved this book

I loved this book. The writing evoked tender memories of my childhood as a Mormon girl.

The author wrote so eloquently of this mother's grief, I found myself crying and mourning with her.

I highly recommend this book. I also recommend having a box of Kleenex handy while reading it.

The beauty of Carys's prose poem is that Love never ends

This deeply felt narrative, elegiac in some ways, should not be construed as an indictment of religious faith, but instead a meditation on the intricacies and intimacies of faith. It has been said that God has his secret stairway into every human heart. All members of the Bradley family are lacerated by Issy's death, and because they are human, each laments in her/his own unique way; none is more sincere or hurt than any other.

Thought provoking

The story feels more like an essay than a story in the popular fiction sense. But having said that people who listen to this with the right mind set going in will get a lot out of it.

The first chapter reads 'some things only become clear much later' and that's how I felt by the end. But I didn't mind as I know this story will stay with me for years to come as I unpack its content bit by bit.

So give this a go and remember its not the destination but the journey that counts.

Great Read!

I bought this book for my dad, the Irishman and lover of World War I and II books. He said it was a great book and thought I would enjoy it too especially the first part of the book. Apparently, the part of the story that takes place during the war is hard to read, but so is any book about war depicting battlefields and death. He said he would share with my brothers and will leave for me in the guest bedroom on my next visit. My dad is an avid reader with high standards so if he likes a book, I know it's good.

I love to find a book that captures all of me as I sit in the winter of my home in a comfortable chair and a fire to warm the room. With "How Many Miles to Babylon" I found such a treasure. I grew up in the land of Jerry and Alec at a time when freedom had not yet been born. I'm half way through this story of vivid imagery and magical verse. Jennifer Johnson deserves a Nobel Prize in Literature for every sentence she writes. And I read some more, join me!

Brief But Very Powerful

Oh! What a surprisingly powerful novel! One of our Irish neighbors recommended it to me, saying of all the books he was forced to read for school, this was his very favorite one. And I must say, the book took me by surprise! Though truly more of a novella than novel, at only being a scant few pages over 150, it was beautifully written and so emotional! I just loved it! I do think, however, in order to truly appreciate it, you need to have some understanding of the historical and political context of the book's WWI setting. The style of the book even adds to that historical feel, because despite its 1980s publication, it definitely has the feel of a book written before WWII even. All in all, a surprisingly wonderful story and one that I am very glad that I read!

Brilliant, then boring, then downright silly...

I wanted to read this book so much I pre-ordered it, something I've done only once before. As a former ND'er, I've been fascinated by the "man camps" serving the state's booming oil industry, and often thought that the whole setup would be a good setting for a novel. When I saw "The Missing Place" reviewed in Country Life magazine, I immediately looked to see where I could find it, and there it was, on Audible. Was I disappointed? Yes and no.

The parts of the book -- the early parts -- deal mostly with the man camps and the whole culture that has sprung up overnight, almost, with the thousands of men, mostly men, who move there to work in the daunting and dangerous mining business. I've read everything I can find on the camps, on life in that part of the State, and thought Littlefield did a very good job in "reporting", as it were, what life is like there, what the people are like, how native residents and the newcomers all manage to live together is such chaos. I enjoyed that part immensely -- in fact, in those early parts of the book, maybe most of the first half, the writing is nothing short of brilliant. Excellent, just excellent, the way she captures the scene, the emotions, the loneliness, the lack of access to most of the things we take for granted in other parts of the country. There aren't any heroes here -- no one comes off as saints, either, which is probably the way it is.

But then something happens -- can't even identify exactly what the problem is, but the book abandons the original tale (two radically different mothers, both searching for sons who have gone missing) and ranges off into something like conspiracy theory, weighing in on who, exactly, might have been responsible for the missing men.

I found myself really routing for him and urging him through all the obstacles thrown in his way. The author clearly adores Italian opera and has immersed himself in the history and lore of it. I have a fairly deep knowledge myself, but still learned from him. Thank you!

This book is akin to the bildungsroman literature, in which young protagonists go through a series of tribulations to emerge as strong young men. Of course, there is a wonderfully human love story along the way.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scenes with his teacher, Alfredo, tug emotionally, but you can't beat the ending! Bob Neufeld, the narrator, moved effectively between vivid story telling and distinct character voices, His Italian pronunciation was spot on.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

In the Prologue, Bob Neufeld's sensitive and emotional reading of Giovanni's father telling the young Giovanni a favorite opera story at bedtime captured me and pulled me in.
