Highly Amusing!

Brilliant listen

The outline of this story is that the main character Frank Derrick is hit by a milk float which renders him immobile and his daughter pays for a home help to nurse him back to health.

JB Morrison's characterisation of Frank is spot on, as is the narration by Julian Glover. Its funny, thought provoking and sensitive, sometimes all at once. We probably know a Frank, we certainly know some of the other characters portrayed. The book deals with the loneliness and banality of being old with a character who feels his time isn't up, but is going through the motions.

Once I started this audiobook I couldn't stop, hence it only lasted about 3 days, it's a much better listen than his last book, purely because the character is likeable.

I would totally recommend this audiobook as its a great story a great listen and a great performance.

Funny, poignant and beautifully written

This is the writers 4th book and the clearest evidence yet that one of the worlds finest lyricists is shaping up to be equally adept as a novelist. Not as laugh out loud funny as his last book, the excellent Driving Jarvis Ham, Frank Derrick is the more mature and poignant tale of an 81 year old man struggling to fill his remaining time with anything besides DVDs and cold callers. Frank has an accident with a milk float and home carer Kelly comes into his life. Whilst remaining laced with the authors considerable wit what makes the book so life affirming is the familiarity of the characters and the scenario they play out...

The magic of Max Brand is found in his descriptions and dialogs. His descriptions are word pictures, spoken as though from a protagonist in his\her vernacular. His story line is relatively simple, but ends with the reader surprised, satisfied and delighted. His simple story of Sky Blue, a huge, wild stallion is artfully written. The ending will satisfy and delight.

Decent novel.

First, I have to admit I am a L'Amour fan. So my review has to be taken in that context. The characters were not quite convincing and the story line weak, but it was a fun read for most of three quarters of the story. Don't know if I will read another of his stories.

One Max Brand's best

A highly unlikely story particularly with 2 wild stallions but relax and enjoy the trip. The hero seems most unlikely as is much of the story but it is a great and interesting read. Don't be petty, there is not perfection all the time.

Great story,romance and secrets galore

This book draws you in to its tangle of secrets and you are compelled to keep listening to find out more. It's packed full of intrigue, cover ups, rocky romance, clashes between social classes and the impact of the horrors of war on those who endured it. The descriptions are so good you can almost feel the dampness and smell the rank air. The characters are all very strong, some more likeable than others - Jacqueline King's naration is excellent and she brings each character to life.

This is a wonderful tale that holds your attention from beginning to end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the twists and urns in the story. Sometimes I get a book that I cant wait to find out what happens but at the same time do not want the book to end. For me this was such a book

Exciting last couple of hours!

Slightly laboured first hours of the book. It only really got enthralling during the last few hours. If only it could have been as gripping from the start.

A gripping story

A marvellous gripping tale of three ladies all in different stations in the early 19th century. Their stories intertwined beautifully and then hurtle towards an ending that you only half guess. A must read.

Wonderful Addition To The On Dublin St Series

I really enjoyed this story. The writing was on the wall that these two would end up together, so it was a fun journey watching them get there. Olivia is a beautiful girl that is yearning for love; Nate is a gorgeous guy who has suffered loss at the hand of love, well really they both have. They formed an instant friendship, and shared an easy camaraderie that created an extremely strong bond between them. Olivia trusted her friend and felt that they could share anything with each other, so who better to ask help her attract Benjamin, the cute guy that she sees at work. What she lacks in confidence, Nate makes up in his bravado. They agree to him helping her with her "flirting" skills, and finding her inner sexy goddess. At Joss and Braden's wedding reception, after indulging in some liquid courage, Olivia confides to Nate her sheer lack of experience with men, and before you know it, the private lessons in the art of seduction become physical between them, and that is when things get a little complicated.

I enjoyed the humor, witty dialogue, and getting to see our friends and couples from the previous reads; we also had the stage set for Hannah and Marco's story along with getting a glimpse at Cole in what I hope to be a future story as well. What I thought would have made the story perfect, was if we could have gotten into the head of Nate; he was struggling with some real pain, and I was obvious that he cared deeply for Olivia so I would have loved to read his thoughts. Maybe we will get more of this couple in the future, I sure hope so.

Having been involved in the days of theatre rep - this book had me cringing one minute and in stitches the next. Very true to life - if you know the world of touring theatre - listen to this. Thoroughly recommended.

Truthful, candid and brilliant

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

As the great Michael Frayn stated, "It's unfair that Michael Blakemore, one of the world's great theatre directors, is also such a good writer!" Simon Callow adored this book too. Anyone even remotely interested in acting will love this book - it is a pitch perfect account of a young man striving to learn his craft in rep in 1960's England. Beautifully drawn characters abound, and, crucially, the innate humour of Michael Blakemore shines through. A perfect gem. And a touching, realistic love story too....

Have you listened to any of Philip Birds other performances? How does this one compare?

As usual, Philip Bird brings his considerable intelligence to the narration. There are many and varied voices in this book and all the characterisations and accents are spot on. Masterful.

Maybe Better Read Rather Than Listen?

What did you like most about The Blindfold?

This is a classic post-modernist novel: 4 compelling and interlinked stories around the same character through which the author presents perspectives on identity, shifting perspectives and feminism.

Would you recommend The Blindfold to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book but not necessarily the audiobook. The complexity of Hustvedt's language and structure demand you engage fully with the text, and I found myself replaying lots of sections in order to fully understand what she was saying. I finally ended up buying the book, reading that and then going back to the audiobook, which worked well. Hustvedt's later works (particularly 'The Burning World') definitely need to be read rather than listened to to get the most out of them.

Which character as performed by Sasha Pick was your favourite?

I thought Sasha Pick was a good choice of narrator and her portrayal of Iris was very good.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I wouldn't make a film of it for the above reasons: needs to be read.
