    Title: The Dead Lands
    Author: Benjamin Percy
    Narrator: Holter Graham
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-09-15
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Like Stephen King's The Stand before it, The Dead Lands is an incredible novel set across the sprawling landscape of a nightmarish postapocalyptic American West.
The world we know is gone, destroyed by a virus that wiped out nearly every human on the planet. Some few survivors built walled cities, fortresses to keep themselves safe from those the virus didn't kill...but did change.
Sanctuary. A citadel in the heart of the former United States of America. Hundreds of miles in every direction beyond its walls lies nothing but death and devastation. Everyone who lives in the safety Sanctuary provides knows that.
Until the day a stranger appears. He speaks of a green and fertile land far to the west, a land of promise and plenty, safe from the ruin the virus has wreaked. He has come to lead the survivors away from Sanctuary, to the promise of a new life without walls.
But those who follow him will discover that not everything he says is true.
    Critic Reviews:
"Benjamin Percy's The Dead Lands is a case of wonderful writing and compulsive reading. You will not come across a finer work of sustained imagination this year. Good God, what a tale. Don't miss it." (Stephen King)
"The Dead Lands is a bomb-blast of a novel, casting its tremors in every direction. Benjamin Percy's range grows broader with every book he writes. Here he takes a journey across a cataclysmic future American West, sending his band of seekers, scholars, assassins, and explorers through a landscape as dangerous and surreal as it must have seemed to the original Lewis and Clark. Their adventure, like the novel itself, travels far past the frontier, into the deepest and most thrilling of wildernesses." (Kevin Brockmeier, author of The Brief History of the Dead)
"Benjamin Percy is one of the most gifted and versatile writers to appear in American publishing in years... His prose has the masculine power of Ernest Hemingway's, but also the sensibilities and compassion of Eudora Welty. His writing is like a meeting of Shakespeare and rock 'n' roll. Benjamin Percy knows how to keep it in E-major, and what a ride it is." (James Lee Burke, author of Feast Day of Fools)
"With Red Moon one of our most blazingly gifted young writers stakes his claim to national attention. Benjamin Percy has one great advantage over most writers who attempt "literary horror": he understands the literature of real horror from the inside out, and he speaks it like a native. This is a novel with the power to thrill and transport, also to lead the reader welll out of her comfort zone and into emotional territory few people have ever seen." (Peter Straub)

`You would drive a nun to drink'.
Author Peggy Holloway came to writing late. She has a long and interesting career of teaching mathematics in both the high and college level, working as a geophysicist in a major oil company exploring for oil and gas and working as a counselor/psychotherapist with adults, groups, families, couples and teens. Credential? - a BS in geology, an MCS in mathematics and an MA in Psychology. Her first forays as an author were technical - reports as a geophysicist, research papers in psychology, and letters to authorities while counseling adolescents. She has now written almost twenty novels ranging from romance to paranormal to mysteries and psychological thrillers. She now addresses familial idiosyncrasies and their permutations on children in this very touching new novel.
As is her style Peggy opens her book with a setting that reaches out to the reader and immediately pulls them in to discover where the situation she first describes will lead: `They were fighting again. He couldn't take it. He had to get out. He was only eight years old, but he had to leave. He was going to take care of himself. Throwing everything into his duffle bag, and unzipping his small tent, Billy crawled out and stood listening. "Why do you always have to drink? We can't even go camping without you bringing a bottle?" That was Daddy talking. Mama was a drunk. She was mean. She sometimes hit Billy and screamed at him. "Oh, shut up! You sound like a baby. It's your fault anyway. You would drive a nun to drink, always on me about something." "Keep your voice down. You'll wake Billy. This camping trip was supposed to be something to bring our family together. It was your idea. `Let's take Billy camping, Kenny. Let's get away, get out into nature. It'll be good for us,'" he mimicked.'
To retrace some steps that will develops as the novel unfolds, the author briefly states, `Billy is only eight years old, but has already had a rough life. He never knew his mama, she died giving birth. His daddy married Rose, when Billy was five years old. Both Rose and his daddy drank and fought continuously. Rose was very abusive to Billy. During a camping trip, planned to bring the family together, Billy sees that things will never change. He decides to run away. Packing his tent in the middle of the night, he hikes through the mountains, facing many challenges before reuniting with his daddy.'
Few writers are able to convey the abuse, the pain, and the scars of unhappy family units as well as Peggy. It is a turn in direction for her, and if this novel is any marker we should anticipate more psychological studies as thrillers in the near future. A well-sculpted story, a topic worth of investigating.

    Title: Mischief

Waspish, wise, and wickedly witty, this is a collection to treasure forever. Reviewers have been describing Fay Weldon's inimitable voice for years. Now, here is Fay Weldon in her own words, selecting and introducing her favourite short stories from across her career as one of Britain's foremost contemporary novelists.

    "Wise, knowing, forthright." (Independent)

87th Precinct books are awesome! My
    Went astray
Finished Mischief by Fay Weldon and gave it 3 1/2 stars. I thought I was going to love this as FW is one of my favourite authors. The 1st half is wonderful with lots of typical FW wry comments by the woman whose husband dies and she remarries very soon thereafter. BUT then it went weird with supernatural exploration which is not my thing.
    A magical, marvelous novel
Mischief has the Deaf Man as its main character and what a main character he is. Is there a smarter character, hero or villain, in crime fiction than the Deaf Man? No way. (Is he McBain's DARK alter ego, as Hope and Carella are his "good" alter ego?) As per usual, bad things are happening in the big bad city. But the Deaf Man creates special problems for the 87th. He provides (and harrasses) Carella and his mates with clues etc. to his upcoming nefarious action, which will take place on a grand scale. But the best part of this story concerns a black rap band and its leader--no p.c. condescension in his treatment of the band, the rock concert of which they are to be a major act and their plot action, just honest, good and accurate writing about our "in trouble" society and about the individuals whose stories actually make this society come to life. A killing near the end of the story takes your breath away and gives much "haunting" food for thought. Much mischief in the city. Cops really are having trouble capturing and containing the bad guys. No plot spoilers here. Read the book. It is great.
Reading these stories is like a trip down memory lane
I adore Ms. Weldon, and have for years. Reading these stories is like a trip down memory lane.

When her nine-year-old son wanted to play summer travel baseball, Shannon had no idea the toughest competition was off the field...
When her son Sam asks to try out for a travel baseball team, divorced mom Shannon Stevens thinks it'll be a fun and active way to spend the summer. Boy, is she wrong! From the very first practice, Shannon and Sam get sucked into a mad world of rigged try-outs, professional coaches, and personal hitting instructors. But it's the crazy, competitive parents who really make Shannon's life miserable. Their sons are all the second coming of Babe Ruth, and Sam isn't fit to fetch their foul balls. Even worse, Shannon's best friend Jennifer catches the baseball fever. She schemes behind the scenes to get her son Matthew on the town's best baseball team, the Saints. As for Sam? Sorry, there's no room for him! Sam winds up on the worst team in town, and every week they find new and humiliating ways to lose to the Saints.
And the action off the field is just as hot. Shannon finds herself falling for the Saints' coach Kevin. But how can she date a man who didn't think her son was good enough for his team... especially when the whole baseball world is gossiping about them? Even Shannon's ex-husband David gets pulled into the mess when a randy baseball mom goes after him. As Sam works to make friends, win games, and become a better baseball player, Shannon struggles not to become one of those crazy baseball parents herself. In this world, it's not about whether you win, lose, or how you play the game... it's all about keeping score.

Does/did your kid play a travel sport?
If your kid plays/ed a travel sport, particularly baseball, just click add to cart!!! This book made me laugh, smile, and just left me feeling lighter somehow.
This book is about the relationship between a mother and son and their introduction to travel baseball at age 9. There were no steamy scenes but there were several romances going on that had you rooting for some couples and cringing at others, and all the while there was a 9 year olds journey into Travel Baseball, and a mothers journey about watching her son grow up.
Sam was so happy to be invited to play Travel Baseball with a REAL summer team, but the experience wasn't exactly what he thought it would be. His mother, Shannon, has her own problems with Travel Ball, culture shock doesn't exactly cover it. As she battles to not turn into one of THOSE parents...the parents that are rooting for a 10 year old to drop the ball, or engaging in brawls in the stands about a little kids ball game; she is faced with her ex husbands antics, his new hot (and barely legal) girlfriend, her own attraction to an opposing teams coach, former friends turning on her, learning what snack-shack time was...and all this before the first tournament!?!?!?!?
This story was great! I laughed at all the real life people it reminded me of (why exactly do parents feel the need to facebook status every move their kids make?) But I also really enjoyed the way it made me remember my sons first few years in travel ball. I sincerely hope there is a sequel!!! *hint hint*
Great for sale, credit or *gasp* PURCHASE (yeah I liked it that much folks!)

    Fantastic reading
This is one of the best - no, THE best! narrating I've heard on a spoken book. Great story too. Highly recommend.
A tale of nature and grit in the city
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes very much so. I loved her descriptions of the natural world in the city, and the human characters are well formed too.
    Any additional comments?
I loved all of this book. It is read perfectly by Clare Corbett. It is about what goes on in the 'undergrowth': in the bits of greenery that form background to our city lives and how we notice it or ignore it. The main characters are 2 children from very different backgrounds whose paths cross and a Polish man who daringly befriends one of them.Melissa Harrison's descriptions are beautiful. She writes lyrically without being sentimental.I wish Audible would have more books like this including Melissa Harrison's latest 'In Hawthorn Time'

A Riptide of a Novel -- Powerfully Written and Finely Nuanced
Undoubtedly one of the best new books I've read, "The Prodigal" by Michael Hurley is the novel I tell everybody they must read. It is a story that you will not soon forget.
"The Prodigal" could be interpreted as a coming of age story, not of teenagers or young adults, but of the middle-aged. Mature adults who seem to have it all together, but grapple with insubstantiality. Adults, who as arrows of Life's bow, are missing their true target. These are the vividly drawn characters of Michael Hurley's novel.
A riveting and socially relevant tale, The Prodigal is a contemporary marvel of an legorical story of vices and virtues, of Achilles' heels, and odysseys into the unknown. Hurley spans two thousand years, several oceans, and eternal love with adventure and captivation.
The protagonist, Aidan, finds himself stripped of all his privileged-trappings: professional kudos, private clubs, top level connections, cash, even credit cards, due to a quick and nearly fatal bite from one of his own kind, an attorney of law. Aidan's mentor sends him to the backwaters of Okracoke Island in North Carolina, a land sequestered between the Pamlico Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, to get his bearings.
Okracoke is often described as a geographical oddity with the folks to go with it. This quirky island has a single paved road and is only accessible by boat; it is so isolated that you can still hear traces of Elizabethan English spoken by the locals. It is as it has always been--a place treacherous enough to be a safe haven. It is here in Okracoke that Aidan meets the others whose fates and chances are bound up with his.
The tides, winds, and currents of life propel us along in directions that, unless we take notice and change our sails, might endanger us, indeed, ensnare our very souls. Hurley captures the forces that swirl among us; sometimes with dangerous gale strengths, sometimes with stalling headwinds, and sometimes becalming. And then there are those magical times in our lives when we have the wind at our backs and our sails on a broad reach going faster than hull speed--our eyes on the prize.
