Uneven, but there's a great story lurking within.

It was a bit too American in style for me to completely enjoy. I found it trying to be clever, not letting the story or characters evolve but purposely make the writing disjointed, as if glimpsed through a opaque framework. This stopped me feeling involved. A shame because there is a cracking story and interpersonal relationships in there, somewhere.

Good read... for true!

Touching story. As a native Louisianian, the story rings true and the landmarks are familiar. The narration fails, at times, with pronunciation of Cajun lingo, but the story more than makes up for it.

I loved this approach

I loved this approach. The author presented this story by doing a psychological analysis of the characters. The description of the three personalities brought to mind how each of us as individuals brings our "Self" to our lives as a product of all that we've experienced. There is much to chew on here, and I recommend it. I was disappointed with the conclusion, however, which is why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. I felt a lack of resolution in the characters -- though that, too, is very true in real life.

I've enjoyed Linda Wolfe as an author and look fwd to more of her work.

Wasted hours of my life

Pretty unremarkable-

I love the true crime drama genre because it rings true. This novel was anything but. I hate to think that I have become jaded to someone's misfortune: fiction based on fact or court testimony itself. I just finished the book last night and have a hard time 're-calling the details. Spare yourself the waste of time and find an Ann Rule book. This was supposed to be based on real tragedy but art has definitely not measured up to reality.

This book was absolutely amazing!

This book was absolutely amazing. You cant help, but to fall in love, with all of the characters! My heart was filled, with sympathetic pain one minute, then joy or laughter the the next. You find yourself hearing each character's distint voices in your head, as their personalities come to life in your mind. It reminds you of the ups and downs of life and makes you relate to your own life's struggles, while reminding you how important it is to cherish, every moment of your life. What a wondeful read!

One of the most interesting books I have read. It caught my attention on page on and all the way through. I got the book out of the mailbox on Saturday afternoon, read half the night, got up Sunday morning, went to church, came home and finished it before time to go back to church. a meaningless monologue that led nowhere

i hated this, wish i hadnt bothered but kept hoping it would get better. it WAS nicely and descriptively written and beautifully read but the lack of story and jumping back and forth timeline drove me mad

Interesting, but also easy to lose interest

Dear Thief is an odd book, one that I have had extreme difficulty in making up my mind as to whether I like it or not. Another question I had was if this book was more enjoyable in audiobook format than print form. Even though Ive been deliberating over this for nearly a week, Im still wavering. There are definitely parts of the story that I found interesting and enjoyable, but then the narrator (of the story, not of the audio) would change tack and Id be left wondering if she would ever get back to that plot point. I think the audiobook is more natural as a format in the way the story unfolds it really is like someone is pouring out their heart to you, but lacks the ability to go over certain sections again. (I listen to my audiobooks mainly while driving, so rewind is not really an option if I still want to be alive at the end of my journey).

The thief referred to in the title is Nina, or Butterfly as she is later known. Our unnamed narrator starts writing to her one winters night just to simply answer a question. She doesnt know where Butterfly is, nor does she think she cares. But the writing process is cathartic and the author of the letter digs into her memories of Nina/Butterfly, revealing pain and hurt as a long lasting friendship dissolves into bitterness. In between this, theres reflections on the authors other relationships with her husband and son. Theres the interactions with the owner of the corner shop and wisdom on the loss that occurs with ageing as she works in a nursing home. Its all bundled in together, jumping from the mundane to Butterflys drug use and betrayal. Its like a bag of mixed nuts youre never quite sure whats going to come out of the bag next. Its this that makes the story interesting, just waiting for the next revelation about Butterfly but it was also the storys downfall for me the waiting for the next string of plot thread that might not ever come.

I think one of the strengths of Dear Thief is that the story doesnt meet the traditional definition of narrative beginning, middle and end. However, the lack of resolution may be annoying for some. I thought that would be what annoyed me (as a scientist, I like Results!), but surprisingly, it didnt. I felt that the way the narrative unfolded prepared me for the realisation that things wouldnt be tied up neatly or come to any definite conclusions.

Loved It

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have always favored long audiobooks for traveling but I am moving more in the direction of shorter listens. I liked the length because I could listen to it as I ran errands etc and finish it quickly. The lapse in time beore I get back to a long book is often discouraging. Where Angels Tread was perfect.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The book is a collection of characters, each with a unique story to tell, that eventually tie into one another. The synchronicity was perfect and much like how God works in people lives.

Which character as performed by Danielle Cohen was your favorite?

I loved the narrator. I listen to a lot of audio books and she may have become my favorite female narrator.

If you could take any character from Where Angels Tread out to dinner, who would it be and why?

It would have to be Mike. You will have to read it yourself to find out why!!

Any additional comments?

Where Angels Tread is reminiscent of Touched by an Angel and leaves one with the same satisfaction that good does triumph over evil.

Packs a punch

This short audiobook packs a lot of punch. The characters are well drawn and the story is both sad and uplifting. It certainly gives the reader some insight into the struggles of a runaway trying to survive on the streets and how she came to be there in the first place. Skillfully narrated by Danielle Cohen, Livingstone's debut novella is well written and paced, with descriptions that easily draw the reader into the story. It's spiritual message is subtle and inspiring without being "preachy." The only negative is that it could easily have been a full-length novel in the hands of this skillful writer.

Recommended.

Would you try another book written by Loretta Livingstone or narrated by Danielle Cohen?

A beautifully written engaging story. I would particularly recommend this book for young adults.

Taut, Suspenseful Story

Pie keeps us guessing (and caring) the whole way as to what will happen to its protagonist Kathryn. It's a story to behold for its taut suspense and surprises along the way.

totally engrossing

this is another RNP masterpiece. the characters are vivid and the narration was beautifully done by Pat Star. I cant wait to get another audible book by this author and narrator.

could not finish this book. The story was interesting but the narattor's deep intake of breaths and pronounciation ' ghwhat' 'ghwhere' ghwhite house' got too much for me.
