Lost interest

The story is interesting but I think I need the book. The narrator has struggled to keep my attention. I'm about half way through and I'm giving up. The story is good, but the narrator is just a bit weak. Every character has the same voice, and she struggles to bring them to life. Shame really.

Made my road trip enjoyable!

Would you consider the audio edition of Chequered Justice to be better than the print version?

Having read the book in print when it came out I still thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook version just as much on a 20 hour road trip over 3 days.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It gave a gripping insight into how the corruption portrayed can happen, and really does happen, within the justice system. It kept my interest by making me want to see how and if the injustices would be put right which is what we are taught to believe and expect.

What about Leslie Phillipss performance did you like?

Leslie Phillips is wonderful to listen to and really brought to life the interest and emotion from the story .

Totally riveting and wonderfully narrated, read by Leslie Phillips (the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter)! It had me laughing one minute and crying the next. Infuriated by the first reviewer; Didn't he realise it MUST be a true story of so called British justice? Google it for the background - I was fascinated but horrified! It was also reviewed by a top British QC, Michael Mansfield, who must surely understand the British legal system? Lastly, Im not a racing fan but I loved this story about a family. Just so sorry its obviously true. Really recommend this!

This story describes what happens when people from different cultures meet and I found it a very enjoyable listen. It is sometimes funny, sometimes embarrassing, but its strength is that it rings true. It demonstrated the complexities of our feelings for others, how we value eachother and are annoyed with eachother at the same time.

Worth a read.

A high school reunion, a clumsy speech, a missing watch. Castellani guides us through an awkward gathering of aging men who were once and, to the annoyance of their wives, remain boys. Through seemingly mundane exchanges, Castellani unfolds a brief (and not quite fully told) story of a man who has long carried a secret loss and longing.

The main character is drawn sparingly. Perhaps too sparingly.

A powerful tribute to Joyce's "The Dead"

In what is purportedly an outtake from an early draft of his 2013 novel, "All This Talk of Love," Castellani deftly re-casts James Joyce's beloved tale, "The Dead," with a number of modern twists and turns. "The Dead," published as part of the collection, "Dubliners," exactly 100 years ago, was part of Irish writers' efforts to forge a sort of national identity by examining contemporary middle-class life. In "The Living," Christopher Castellani updates this to late 20th century middle-America, where a man and his wife attend a party--a Catholic high school reunion--and this event, and a chance encounter with a ghost, dredges up memories that intersect with more recent struggles. In its way, "The Living" attempts to address mid-life questions of identity and choices made, as well as the emerging presence of public gay life and what it means to be gay in the United States (not unlike the questions Joyce and his peers were asking of their countrymen: "Who are we, anyway? Where did we come from? Where are we going?") As Castellani makes clear, there's no path forward to happiness that will not leave collateral damage, and no morality that quite fits--certainly not the moral certainty amid which his characters were so surely raised. One of the questions I took away from it was, "Given that we are alive--that we survive, while others we love or loved may not--what do we do with it that honors both them and ourselves?" This is a highly recommended selection.

Very interesting story

I liked the way the writer revealed the main character: slowly and from a distance, first, especially through scenes with other characters. Then at just the right moment, the protagonist is captured alone, with only his thoughts and deepest feelings, leaving the reader with a haunting sense, which remains long after the story's been put back on the shelf. This story kept me completely absorbed, beginning to end.

An unfinished thought

You think this could be a good story but it doesn't get to anything more than an idea for one.

I already knew that Christopher Castellani is a gifted writer, so I purchased this story as soon as I heard it was available. I wasn't disappointed.

Paints a grim picture

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It is way too long.

I would recommend it to any young person looking to get a position in banking or any highly paid corporate position but can't think of any of my friends I would recommend it to.

What three words best describe Anne Day-Joness voice?

British, pleasant and well-paced.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

I'd watch if it ever came on Netflix just to see how it was different from the book.

The book truly paints a grim picture of the experience of working in the banking industry. The horrible greed and deceit fostered by competition to climb the corporate ladder would make it hard to trust co-workers. Any young person who wants to go into banking should read (or listen) so they'd know that the prestige of the position and the financial rewards may not be worth the abuse they would face.
