Heart Warming

This is a beautifully written book about the relationship between pediatrician and the families he sucours. It is written with an eye to entertaining the reader. Tsesis was able to capture the interesting stories touching on familial love, the importance of moral support and the joy of doing kindness to others. The language is flowing throughout, and it is clearly a work of lover on the part of the author.

I recomend this book to those persons who enjoyed James Harriot or Oliver Sacks. It is written with a similar humour and story telling.

I really like the book!!

Astonishing, meaningful, heart-wrenching

When I was a student of political science, I had a professor who read to us letters home from the war front. He had a collection of pieces from lots of different countries, but messages were remarkably the same - human beings caught up in situations and conflict far beyond their making and often beyond our comprehension, not writing for king and country, but writing of home, writing to home.

This collection follows many fine examples of this genre, from fourteen families; these letters are made all the more meaningful and poignant by the fact that their authors didn't return home alive. The concerns are very basic, but take on a palpable feel to them for the reader today -- care for home, family, plans for the future, honest emotion including fear. This collection spans the range of people from the most recent conflict -- it shows that many of the aspects of war are depressingly the same, no matter what historical era one is in.

The courage of the families to put forward this kind of emotional part of their lives is matched only by the courage of the men and women who themselves lost their lives. The book, companion to a documentary produced by HBO, strives to be non-political; far from being an indictment of the current administration, it focuses instead upon the people involved at the 'ground level' of the conflict. Many of the families are in fact supporters of President Bush, firm in their convictions that the sacrifice of their loved ones was done in the name of democracy and the country.

There is a forward by Senator John McCain, himself a veteran with experiences to tell, but even his family did not suffer the fate of receiving a last letter home from him.

On this Veteran's Day, originally Armistice Day, after the war-to-end-all-wars (that in fact did not), it is proper to remember also those involved in the current struggles, which includes families back home, whose connection is largely through letters, and whose prayers are always that there will be another letter soon, that no letter becomes the last letter home.

Read a part of our current affairs that will become a part of history in these letters, from the perspective of those actually doing the work in Iraq.

I read this book on a flight from Houston to Raliegh. The young man sitting next to me was riveted. He read the book over my shoulder. He wondered how I could read a book like this after I told him my son was in the 3rd Infantry Division.

Inspirational Book

I finally finished the book 2 weeks ago. I stopped after I read the first half of it due to my busy school schedule. I especially found this book very inspirational, how God used Shepherd Andrew Martin to feed His flocks with the Word of God. I never met anyone in person who has feed thousands of people with the Word of God. I have only taught a few number of students. Andrew Martin certainly understands God's words very well and through reading his book, I was able to understand certain passages in the Bible that I had not fully understood before. I also liked how sincere he was in the first half of the book discussing the struggles it is to be a Christian and "to stay right." It is a struggle that we as Christians face everyday to overcome our sinful nature. Thank God for His Son Jesus Christ who defeated Satan and the power of sin in our lives and for giving us a gospel that we all can share with. May God continue to bless your ministry in NKU.

An honest, encouraging, real story of struggle and victory in Jesus

This book is an encouraging story of the writer's struggles to overcome the hardships of life and the true peace and joy that he could only find in Jesus. You don't need to be a Christian to enjoy this book. Every single person can relate to the ups and downs that life throws at you. Everyone can remember painful memories of regret, guilt, and mistakes in their lives.

The writer doesn't try to preach at the reader. He simply wants to share his personal, honest, genuine life story and show the grace and happiness that he could receive through meeting Jesus. He recalls many of his own mistakes and troubles, and his story demonstrates how Jesus' love extends to all people, even those that society dismisses as hopeless.

An easy read, entertaining, and definitely encouraging!

All the makings of a bad version of David Copperfield

This is dare I say it, an unfortunate piece of literature. The author has poor writting skills which made the book somewhat difficult to read, he also cornered the market on "how great I art" giving no information on anyone that had any effect on his life positive or negative, just a me myself and I storyline. His timelines are off, certain things mentioned in his book were not invented at the time he claims to have been exposed to them, and great many religious people I know, myself included are at best disturbed with his version of the gospel. All in all it is a poorly written, generic spiritual rags to riches claim of self importance.

A ray of hope.

The author intends to give an honest account of his life in hopes that troubled young people of today may find a ray of hope. Clearly, he succeeds. It's refreshing to read about someone who not only overcame his own impossible circumstances, but by God's grace, devoted his life to help others. This book is a testimony to God's love at work in our times.

A Fascinating & Fun Memoir

This memoir of Sir Christopher Meyer's diplomatic career is full of great stories about foreign and domestic diplomacy at the highest levels, but the description of the whirlwind romance and marriage of Sir Christopher and Lady Catherine is as good as any romance novel except that it's all true--they really do live happily ever after! Through a university course on diplomacy I've met Sir C. via skype chats with our class and he is absolutely charming--a prince of a man and a real statesman. I wish he could be cloned.

THE INSIDER

Sir Christopher Meyer resigned as British ambassador in Washington just before the start of hostilities in Iraq. He has started a new career as chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, but his frequent appearances on television since he left the diplomatic service have been almost exclusively in connexion with his privileged insights into the origins of the war. The title of the book is a slight misnomer - most of it is indeed about his time as ambassador to the USA, but the first few chapters are partly concerned with his early life and career and partly with a personal issue that burns him up, namely his second wife's grisly experiences with German justice in obtaining access to her children from her first marriage.

In Britain the book has given rise to a good deal of comment for supposedly disparaging or even attacking prominent politicians, and I noticed that he had to appear before a parliamentary committee to respond to such points. These allegations are simply balderdash, and the politicians concerned have no business being so thin skinned in my own opinion. John Prescott's malapropisms are the stuff of legend, and the ones that Meyer records are not only relevant but vintage efforts too. They make Prescott look ridiculous, but nowhere near as ridiculous as his own over-reaction did. In any case Meyer's overall assessment of Prescott is fair and far from unfavourable, and he is not afraid to tell a similar story about himself - after three years of shuffling along presentation-lines he was overcome with a kind of catatonic amnesia, forgot his wife's name and introduced her to the puzzled grandees by various alternatives including `Christopher'.
