More Please

If you like adventure travel writing then you probably already know about Tim Cahill. I first listened to Road Fever and enjoyed it very much. Jaguars gives us glimpses into Cahills adventures. I downloaded Jaguars and I have to admit didn't listen to it for months. When I finally did listen to it I loved it. I now have pass the butterworm and look forward to hold the enlightenment. I hope Audible get more of Cahill's work.

The demise of the British farmer

I spent the whole of this audio book waiting for it to get to the point or to know to what the book was leading. The opening hints at drama with a surreptitious visit to the old family farm barn which has been converted to housing for town incomers. He never seems to pick up from this opening scene. The book is half memoire and half essay on the impact of changes in modern food production and distribution. There are no strong conclusions which I found frustrating. Richard Benson is clearly ambiguous; about whether farming is much of a way of life worth mourning and whether the changes in the countryside are for good or bad. Although the structure of the book is frustrating there are memorable scenes of farm life and the beauty of yorkshire countryside is descriptively conveyed. It's main strength is the commentary it provides on European agriculture from the inside - a case study on the effects on a community over 30 years of changes at a global level.

Yes, I would, Dickie Bird, Jon Pertwee, Brian Blessard who can not find them amusing.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Jon Pertwee is a great voice narrator and Brian Blessard just blows out the words. If you read the book and know their voices you would hear them rattle through your brain but hearing them is so much better.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Could not see this as a movie, but if a stand up or small group theatre most certainly.

Better for the older and wiser, scenes and stories are dated but still knowing each of the actors in this book from my TV screen it does take you back.

Brilliant

It's very funny, the stories told by the celebrities on this audio made me laugh out loud.

Good old thing

One of the most entertaining characters in cricket today is Henry Blofeld. He has a wealth of cricketing knowledge and gives the impression of being a "bit" absent minded, the reason for this is explained in this talk. He also confesses why he calls people "old thing " and " my dear old thing ". A fantastic evening with Blowers a positive suggestion to read.

Even better than I'd hoped

Blowers on splendid form, genuinely witty and warm. I'd hesitated a bit over getting it but think this'll be something I listen to plenty of time over the years.

Very glad I bought it.

I'd love to hear his auto biography A Thirst for Life: With the Accent on Cricket (or even something more recent) on Audible.

Winter Reading

I bought this book for winter reading and haven't had a chance to read it yet but it is my favorite kind of reading. I read hundreds of books each year. I know it will be a good one. The shipping and price was great.

Poor judgement.

This story was ok but way too long. It could have gotten to the point about 100 pages sooner than it did. Really dragged on. Besides that, it's really hard, as a parent, to understand why she did not put more trust in her own daughter than she did. It was very obvious to me as a reader where this was going to end up. I figured out who was really doing this stuff very early on. Needless to say.......family always comes before friends.

Blood abd shear Guts

I have seen this chap on the BBC and always thought what does he know and why is he in a wheel Chair. Well he knows alot about the middle East and that knowledge was gain by moving amoungst the people of the region. A positive tale about a man who loved the people the area and the life of the countries of the middle East. Who one day was at the wrong place at the wrong time. His story is bright and colour full charting the early years he spent reporting and visiting all around that area. Full of the hope and potential the region had and still could have. A tale well told in his own word from the very horse`s mouth.

Blood & Sand by Frank Gardner

An outstanding insight into Middle Eastern geopolitics clearly written with compassion, understanding and verve despite the author's horrendous and tragic personal experience at the hands of al quaeda terrorism. I'll recommend this one to all my friends and associates.

Well written, but not up to the publishers descrip

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I usually find that a memior (or similar) is best read by the author, as the enthusiams, passions etc are best communicated by the person who experienced them. Unfortunately, Frank Gardener's performance was very wooden. He spoke slightly too fast and his received pronunciation didn't help. The wooden delivery and the speed improved enough to no longer be distracting in the middle sections of the book, but in the early part and towards the end, the narration was distracting.

Was Blood & Sand worth the listening time?
