Could totally relate to the main character

Running State contains many valuable lessons for a struggling thirty year old, Dan, as he remembers the glory days of high school running. The story weaves through two stories: high school and at age 30. What I appreciate is how I can relate to life being so much easier when I was younger and forgetting how to never give up as life gets harder and more complicated. The struggle with life (alcohol, running, getting older) and how to overcome can apply to any situation. Even though I don't run (often) but swim, I am reminded of how Dan trains his mind to think positively and keep going as I struggle to get back in shape. Running State is a super easy read and I was drawn in by the first chapter as the character's struggles are revealed and I was hooked and kept reading finishing within three hours.

Non-runner wanting to become one after reading this book!

This is a very well written book which gets you inside the mind of a runner back in his heyday. The hero, Dan, is a guy in his 30s reminiscing about being the captain of the track team during his senior year of high school. Dan's thoughts reflect a strong and deliberate leader and the stories he recollects are fully engrossing making the read quite enjoyable. During the moments in the book when we get a glimpse of the struggle happening in the mind of a runner, I found myself sweating and heart pounding as he raced along the track. These past struggles and successes were drawn upon to serve as a catalyst and motivation for driving change in Dan's current life. The idea of recalling past momentos and building upon those is a fantastic idea and something I'm able to apply to my own life. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and life lesson and can't wait to see what else the author has in store for us readers =)

I still won't be a runner...

But this was a great story. The story weaves between the past and the present connecting completely different circumstances through running. Although Dan, the main character, faces struggles in his adult life which varied greatly from those of his high school cross country days, he finds that the same principles and determination that helped him overcome obstacles in the past helped him in the process of overcoming his fears and shortcomings in the present.

Exhilirating

interesting journey of a person who believes in himself and turns his life around. getting positive thoughts from his past to map his future is inspirational. uplifting to be able to beat your demons.

Inspiring!

Great book! Inspiring to runners, writers and anyone trying to make a change. I love how Dan improved so much by revisiting his glory days and really re-evaluating what he could do to make his family life even better than it already was.

Good read!

Seasoned Stories from a Fine Headhunter

The first words here will surely weed the wieners out but those who choose to turn the page and take the consequences will be rewarded in numerous ways. Stories within stories (spell)bound up in themselves are interesting and flow easily and (seemingly) effortlessly.

Candace is constantly checking herself while Leland lazily goes with the flow. Bay may be my favorite guy. I disliked Able and Elliot. Thad retells old tales of treachery as two pilgrims travel into the wilderness toward their doom.

I loved the lyrical whimsy of love and wretchedness, art and anarchy, religion and wickedness. I felt the heat of the fires, the mist of the coast, what allure led on the lured, and what put the pain in the poetry.

Poetry pounds and plays throughout so as to remind the reader words can compound meaning--and still accrue interest! Here that interest is promptly paid. Constant crap-containing conversation will abuse and confuse "clean" minds, and may indeed be taken as godforsaken. Conversely, profane conversations apparently objectively observed speak of the speaker's prolonged proximity to lumpen-proles. In this world--as in anyone's--Sex and Truth in Titillation is not unknown, and neither is the abrupt death of a beloved character, here as in one's own (book of) life.

Avatars of the Bible Belt (beaten) brand will inevitably be appalled by the audacity of Hunting Seasons, unlike rowdy rule-breakers, boredom-busters and other pin(pot)heads. However critical I can be I am no critic, but I savored these words and found them full of flavor, as may many other word (ad)diction dorks.Hunting Seasons

Fascinating and challenging...

A friend lent me this book when I complained that many of the novels I had read in the past year had been largely mundane and predicable. I had told him that I was so tired of plot twists that could be seen a mile away, dialog that appeared to be lifted from Lifetime Movie Network potboilers, and characters who were mostly one-dimensional stereotypes. His recommendation of "Hunting Seasons" turned out to be something very different from my recent experience. The novel wasn't particularly easy to get into at first but once I understood the book's flow and style, I was burning through the pages like mad. I must admit that some of the many literary and political references escaped me but the very real, very complex relationships between the main characters in this story were, at times, uncomfortably familiar and occasionally disturbing.

Recommended.

It was a brilliant book. Tess is an unforgettable character. The story enthralled me and moved me with it's passion.

Not recommended!!

This is quite possibly the most depressing novel I have ever encountered! Sorry but I really couldn't recommend it . If the descriptions are supposed to make up for storyline then it succeeded! Having tried to submit this review I am forced to give it some sort of star rating - however - I would have preferred to leave it blank!

Coming home to Ireland

Unlike my predessor I liked the book. But I have to admit whilst listening to the first chapters or so I was wondering it was the book I downloaded. However, when it emerged that Tess emigrated to the US her story kept me engrossed, reminded me sort of Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt and/or Nora Webster by Colm Tóibín. A great debut novel I couldn't put down.

Promising but doesn't deliver

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator was great but the story just didn't live up to my expectations at all.

Matters of light and darkness

Have read, enjoyed and reviewed five Susan Hill novellas and always felt her work had been rushed into print. But âBlack Sheepâ is a perfectly paced and a truly searing family drama. It contains notable characters like work-shy, God-fearing grandpa Reuben, struggling mother Evie, nasty son-in-law Charlie, and of course, lovely Rose and Ted himself. Sad story, sad ending.

Perfect for reading clubs to discuss the family's troubles or coal miners and their culture, then and now, or todayâs relevance of capital punishment and the Old Testament.

Very much India.

I found this novel somewhat disjointed, its pace not sufficient or organised enough to engage the interest. There is, however, a lot to learn from it. It has the ring of truth. In a way, it is very much India.

Took me back home and then some

This novel was such a fantastic read. It usually takes me a while to get through a novel and I am very picky. The Strike however....I COULD NOT put it down. I couldn't be more different from the protagonist, but I felt like I was him. I smelled the train they traveled on. Mr. Mahadevan has done an incredible job of invoking the world in which the story takes place. The characters felt like I knew them. I know people like them. The story felt so personal...I couldn't believe it. I didn't want it to end. A MUST READ.

Class tensions in aftermath of MGR's death

The book is an interesting insight into the life of a (higher caste) family in the India of the 1980s. It revolves around the events in the South of India following the death of the politician M.G.R.

For one not familiar with the events, it is not just a novel but a (semi-fictional) history lesson. For a westerner, it is fascinating to get a non-caricatural glimpse of real life in India at the time.

The biggest shortcoming for non Indian readers is the extensive use of indian words throughout. In particular, when referring to characters, the author mixes indian relationship terms with english ones, making it quite difficult for the reader to keep track of which character is being referred to.

The pace of the story is, alos, not always consistent. Rather than the usual buildup towards a climax, it is more of rollercoaster with moments of tension scattered throughout with some side-stories left untold (like the sexual tension between the children which does not lead anywhere).

An absolute must-read!

This book grips you from the beginning and stays with you long after you finish it. The writing is smooth and wonderfully descriptive -- I found myself alternately afraid for, sympathizing with, and laughing with the protagonist and his friends and family. I would highly recommend this book, and can't wait to read more tales that will hopefully flow from this supremely talented author's pen.

Just meh

I loved the main characters, especially Doggo, and the writing is well done but the story fell flat. Just a young man experiencing difficult romantic, familial and office relationships, aided by a dog thrust into his care. It might have been inspired by the saying, "All you need is love... and a dog." I found myself wanting more substance.

A Sequel? Comic strip book?

This was a cute story and a quick read. Some fresh air and a laugh after a string of bleak historical fiction and dark murder mysteries. I'd read a sequel :)

Very Enjoyable.

Iâm halfway through this book, and Iâm hooked. Itâs the most entertaining thing Iâve read in months. Have already recommended it to my friends.

Easy to lose yourself in

I loved how absorbing this book was, I'm not a huge reader any more and I couldn't put it down. My only issue was the dialogue was slightly hard to follow at some points.

Heartwarming

This book has everything we have come to expect of a book âabout modern lifeâ: office politics, romance, the urban/rural divide, the friends, the career going nowhere, the messed up love-life and unemployment. But it also has a dog. And that makes what would have otherwise been just another, rather predictable commentary on modern life a wonderful, heartwarming story about redemption.

Doggo and Dan have both been abandoned (several times it turns out) and both have been deeply scarred by that. And they donât care for each other that much. Doggo is, when the book commences, as likely to bite Dan as anything and the only reason Dan doesnât return Doggo to the shelter is that they are going to neuter him. (Dan has issues with that.) So itâs not the best start to a relationship.

For this is a story about a relationship. We learn quickly that Doggo is a fine judge of character; that Dan quickly becomes quite attached to himâeven makes bringing him to work a condition of employment when he has no other jobs and quite rightly (I think) calls him his âmental health dog.â Anyone who has ever had a dog will know exactly how accurate that description is.

And thanks to Doggo who helps Dan by simply being a dog, Dan is able to become a better version of himself, find redemption and yes happiness.

As we watch him make that transformation, Mark Mills pokes gentle fun at our societyâs foibles (health and safety obsession for example) but somehow manages to not put anyone down. (I think itâs thanks to Doggo.)

I highly recommend this bookâwhether you have doggos in your life or not.
