A desire to know what he looked like, sounded like

There has been an emotional silence in my life for 47 long years. A longing to know an uncle that did not return from Vietnam. A desire to know what he looked like, sounded like, was interested in and most importantly a yearning to know if he would love me? Restless Hearts has begun to heal the wounds that are so deeply carved in my heart. My uncle is a featured character in Restless Hearts. It is through the pages of this amazing book that I have become closer to him in his spiritual world and have begun to heal. This book led me to write a tribute to my uncle on the Vietnam Virtual Wall. After writing the dedication, I was contacted by the soldier who was with my uncle at the time of his demise. The soldier promised me he was not alone, did not suffer and he died well. What more could a niece ask for? A beautiful book with exquisite meaning and words showed me the uncle that I never knew and a real-life soldier eased the pain of the unknown. To the soldier-I thank you from the bottom of my heart, to my Uncle Ricky-I know you walk beside me every day, and to Dennis Baker-you are my angel on earth and thank you for bringing Richard Alan Wood home.

A touching story of fallen heroes and second chances

Dennis Baker wrote a compelling tale of fallen heroes who get a second chance to see their loved ones. I was very impressed and moved by the imaginative way that he pulled that off. I read the book in two days and was disappointed to reach the end. His characters are written well and I really cared what became of them. The plot does seem a bit contrived in places, but I just pressed the "I believe" button and kept reading. I recommend "Restless Hearts". It is a one-of-a-kind read and the Epilogue ties everything together quite well. Great read, Dennis!

Thank you Dennis for a wonderful story about our fallen heroes. Having know some of the soldiers, which I love that you pictured them in the book, put their faces in every ones minds that read the book, so they will live on. Lets not forget Frank, who I see every once in awhile, who is a wonderful guy! I feel good for him, because his friends and buddies are being remembered. A story that families that have lost a loved soldier may have some peace, I loved the book, good easy read, but very moving.

Wow! Disturbingly captivating!

"Going to New Orleans" follows alcoholic jazz trumpeter Lewis King and his girlfriend, Ms Sugarlicq, as they travel from quiet Victoria in Canada to the humid underbelly of New Orleans. New Orleans, in all its voodoo glory, is a central character in this surreal debut novel.

"My name is Lewis King. I play trumpet. My girlfriend is insane, and so am I," jazz musician King says on waking from a disturbing dream. He invites his Ms Sugarlicq to accompany him to a gig in New Orleans, and the plot dives into a surreal mix of kinky sex, literary and musical allusions, and a bawdy guide to New Orleans. King and Sugarlicq's adventures range from sickening to bizarre to surreal. The language is evocative and spare. The line between reality and fantasy is blurred as much of the action takes place in a drunken haze. Beyond This Horizon by David Thompson Kindle edition

A damn good read. We follow Tat's journey from simple childhood on an isolated farm in Westmoreland to sophisticated maturity in the world of painting, sculpture, opera and jazz of 1920s London. It is tautly written, almost understated, which makes the violent episodes all the more shocking. I have great empathy withTat and hope a sequel follows as seems to be suggested by the ending.

Beyond This Horizon by David Thompson

The hero of David Thompson's right-of-passage debut novel Beyond This Horizon is Thomas Arthur Taylor, known to everyone as `Tat'. He is brought up on a remote hill-farm in Cumbria, before the First World War.

Tat gains a place at Appleby Grammar School, which he attends as a boarder, paid for by his grandmother. At school he excels at rugby. As a chorister, he has a soaring alto voice, which develops into a rich baritone of operatic dimensions. Academically clever, he gains entry to University College London, where he studies law.

Surprisingly, Tat mixes with art students from the Slade School in London where he meets a beautiful liberal-minded upper-class painting student named Jane. They fall in love and seem perfectly matched.

Thompson enlivens the narrative of undergraduate life by introducing famous figures from the early Jazz scene and London art world, giving them believable parts in the story. The book's best bits are the action sequences: throat grabbingly exciting, the writing zips along. The next best are the sex scenes which are suitably arousing, but (as John Betjeman might complain) there aren't enough of them. Tat's seemingly idyllic relationship with Jane comes to a cataclysmic end before Tat can discover her secret sexual obsession with a man old enough to be her father. I could have done with more about Jane since as a beautiful well brought-up young woman willing to indulge in al fresco sexual intercourse in a 1920's London street is not a character to be discarded lightly.

`Beyond This Horizon' is clearly intended to be followed by a sequel, which might develop into a trilogy. I for one can't wait to read more about Tat's future career and life-odyssey.

Scotty Jackson is a scaler. He examines cut timber to help identify the amount of good lumber that can be used and obtained from the wood. He is one of many men that work at this job. But, Scotty decides he needs a change and leaves his job in Missoula and heads for Sutton's Landing where the workload might be the same but the head person is definitely different. Meeting Augustus Horne might deter anyone from remaining in his employ but not Scotty. From the author of Finding Jennifer comes a unique and very informative and interesting novel dealing with the timber industry Scaling Tall Timber by Dave Folsom.

When meeting Augustus for the first time his job requirements are specified and his demeanor is anything but friendly as he explains the hours, the requirements and how the job is done. Each scaler must be able to identify the species, the dimensions and defects and they need to be noted and placed in scale book and totaled daily. There are specific procedures that must be followed by the log scaler each time the timber is cut in order to determine defects in the log. So, why would Scotty want to move to a new location and why Suttons Landing? That still remains to be seen.

Meeting his scaling partner Olie Federson he learned more about the operation and the people involved. But this job proves challenging in many ways not just the scaling but the people that Scotty meets are quite unique and different from those at his other job. He meets several women that find him attractive, but he has not been through a traumatic loss and needs time to adjust to his new surroundings and much more before dealing with relationships. Meeting Rags, an alcoholic truck driver who is trying recover, two women that like him and the western logging industry and the huge changes coming this book has many plot lines, themes but one stands out that before all is said and done he will learn the true meaning of friendship, loyalty and trust. With a difficult boss to deal with and hoping to stay afloat, he learns more than just about life as a logger and scaler.

Friendships were difficult to cultivate and others were strained. Scotty took things in stride and realized that some people could not be won over and others would just tolerate his presence. Sent up to replace another scaler Scot learns some hard lessons and just might prove more than his worth. Changes were imminent. Jobs and men lost or moved to other locations and he would now be in the position of woods boss but the end result would be dramatic as a dam would be build, a small town and its residents wiped out, unlimited logging gone and things would become more expensive.

silly and funny. It's a nonsense

the book is crazy, silly and funny. It's a nonsense, definitely, but it cracked me up a bunch of times, and I could really hear the voice of the author the whole way through. The fonts and layouts and colors of the pages are just surprisingly interesting from page to page. Given that there are no illustrations, it has a lot of visual impact. I'm normally pretty skeptical about that kind of thing, but it's really appealing. The changes to the shape and size of the letters are consistently surprising, and little things like the font used for "Switzerland" or "Oak Tree" visually evoke the words so well. Read it along with the audio book and it's a special treat.

Colours is no-nonsense! It is magnificent!

Colours is a magnificent piece of art! I loved the feeling of reading the book â freedom, playfulness and happiness. Natashaâs play with language, color and graphic design are amazing and creative. It reminds me of Lewis Carroll but on steroids and it is fresh, new and something to experience. And here is my nonsensical acrostic about Colours:

IF you need to lighthearted entertainment... THIS hysterical book is for YOU!

Despite the WACKY title I found this book hysterically funny. NOT laugh-out-loud funny but highly entertaining. It reminded me of the Pink Panther movies which I adored as a child. The pace of this book is FAST! I cannot wait for this book to be made into a movie. THIS is one book/movie I will ABSOLUTELY want to see!!! I loved , loved, loved this book.

Every Woman's Fantasy!

Author Fierce Dolan has taken every woman's fantasy of getting up close and personal with a character on the big screen (movie or T.V.) and has given us a luscious treat of a read! Who hasn't lusted after a fictional character at least once in their lives? Twice? If you are saying yes, read on.

Federal public defender, Siler Dunham's T.V. crush goes beyond reality and takes on a life of its own, allowing the non-dater to become involved briefly with Farraj, the sexy star of the Wednesday night hit show, Endangered. (This reader couldn't stop thinking about Sawyer on LOST, but I digress). Farraj is trapped in a drug smuggling/farming compound, looking for his friends who were captured, with militia and drug lords out to get him, as seen in last week's episode of Endangered. I won't give away the plot but Siler has information that only someone watching the show would know, and the rest is what fantasies are made of.

Dolan is a beautiful writer and her ability as a wordsmith is a lovely counterpoint to her gritty sex scenes. We know this author can write sex (check out Gigolo's Seduction), but this one serves up just enough excitement between Siler and Farraj to add to the compelling story.

The supernatural aspect of Siler meeting a fictional character was delivered well and was icing on the already yummy cake. I happen to love a little supernatural with my cake.

The Fangirl's Dream is a smart, sexy foray into every woman's fantasy. And who doesn't want a little bit of that thrown into everyday life? Highly recommended by this supernatural reader!

I learned a very important lesson with this audiobook â I am a visual person who relies on the written word in order to make the story come to life. An audiobook format does not allow me to create a connection with the story in any way. As a result, I wasnât able to follow the story very well, having no clear sense of time and place. I didnât realize how important that was until I actually tried to focus on the story.

When I tried the print version, my expectation was that this would be another hot installment in the 1 Night Stand Series. With The Fangirlâs Dream, I simply couldnât get past the fact that the storyline focuses on a womanâs fascination with a television character. Maybe I was looking for a bit more substance, but the fact that she was mysteriously dropped into one of the dramatic television scenes alongside her crush didnât work for me.

I'll Never Let you go - you want be able to put it down

I love this book, it was fast moving, entertaining and the characters where believable. once you start reading it you can not put it down, very easy reading.
