Written in a similar style to Martin Amis. Perhaps with more characterization which let's you warm them. Very enjoyable descriptions of the effect of place on people, any expat will love his books.

A really good adaptation of this story for younger readers

I wouldn't think that the tragedies of Sophocles would make interesting books for younger readers, but I was proven wrong. 'The Story of Antigone' by Ali Smith with illustrations by Laura Paoletti is a very good adaptation of the famous drama.

The story starts on the battlefield in the aftermath of a terrible slaughter. Our narrator is a crow, which is morbid and a perfect choice as a witness to the events. Antigone wants to bury her vanquished brother, but King Creon, the victor, wants no such thing. What follows is a struggle between a headstrong king and a young woman who would stand up to him. The outcome is tragic, but the lesson of being willing to give your all for what you believe in rings true today.

The illustrations are in earth tones and are quite good. It's a pretty dark story, but the narrator and a stray dog have a few moments to lighten things up. There is also a question and answer at the end between Crow and the adapter Ali. This is a very good adaptation for younger readers.

It all begins here

I saw an interview with the author on Japan's NKH news. They showed him walking through an Indonesian village where he was honored and recognized as that country's premier modern author.

I was pleased by the novel's swift movement consisting of brief chapters. They quickly set up the locale and the heroes within who strive to learn and preserve their schoolhouse. In between the story of schoolchildren yearning for a larger life, Hirata deftly relates the tragic tale of Indonesia's tin industry. How the haves quickly set up shop, mined out the wealth from the have-nots farmland, and then received their own reality check as the novel progressed to see how the children were doing 12 years later.

I understand the author wrote a number of sequels to this story as well as optioned a miniseries on the original book. Read this semi-autobiographical account and see why there are some things worth fighting for.

I mean that in the conceptual sense. There is no sex or violence in this book, it is instead violence of the heart, of neglect, of greed. But there is also the hope of learning, and the power of thought.

an unequal marriage pride and prejudice continues book

I read everything Pride and Prejudice. I usually enjoy the continuation books. This one was ok...I felt like the author rushed through...she had a good story idea, but in the end I was left scratching my head at some decisions that were made by the characters that I disagree with. It is worth reading, but like I said the end left me scratching my head a bit.

Miss Bingley must have written this book!

What a Horrible, HORRIBLE book! The sitcom-esq ending where everything is wrapped up in the last 3 pages as all a big misunderstanding do nothing to save this book.

After 19 years of marriage Elizabeth and Darcy are "sooo" much in love, that is until they receive some bad news, and Darcy concludes that he made a mistake in perusing Elizabeth after he learned of her family's insanity all those years ago. AND TELLS HER SO! Elizabeth, in turn, realizes that Darcy is a "monster," and wishes for equality of the sexes so that she may get a divorce. Her realization of her superior character is what inspires the title of "an unequal marriage." This also leads her to become bitter about Jane's happiness.

Of the 180 so pages of this book over 170 are dedicated to the hatred and resentment of the Darcys. This book is written from bitterness and contempt of love. It has nothing to do with the original sentiments of Austin, and is uninteresting and depressing in its own right. The shortness of the book make it undeveloped and do nothing to justify the stream ill events and bad feelings.

The book only serves as a laundry list of bad happenings and despair only to have the curtain whipped aside at the very end to say "silly Elizabeth, none of that's true - now lets go to Italy and be Rich!" All of the fair-weather love and weak loyalties are supposed to be forgotten in the end pronouncement of an undying and strong love. This sentiment is our reward for wading through the dreadfulness of the book.

Silly reader! Don't waste your time, money or good feelings on this wretched excuse for a story of love.

Ruined for me by the narration.

How could the performance have been better?

The narration spoiled this for me. On a casual listen, it sounded good. McDowell speaks clearly enough, if a little 'posh' for all of the characters, but that wasn't the problem. Unfortunately, her breaths, and the sound of swallowing wasn't edited out. Worse still, sentence pauses were wrong way too often, and the emphasis was frequently incorrect. I can't believe the puctuation in the draft she read from was bad enough to cause this. Surely she understands the difference between a comma and a full stop! I'm writing this part way through the book. I'm not sure if I can make it to the end.

Any additional comments?

This is a very well written tale of family dynamics. It includes, love, passion, anger, infidelity, the frailty of people, spoilt adult children and family rifts. The characters are well drawn and interesting. For me, due to the narration, its one to read, rather than listen too, but that won't necassarily be everyones experience.

Dying to Write (A Sophie Rivers Mystery)

This is the second book in the Sophie Rivers mystery series. Sophie, a college lecturer, has won a prize of a creative writing course. The course is being held at a mansion just outside Birmingham and it seems to be jinxed from the start when one of the tutors is ill and one of the students is co-opted to take his place.

Sophie realises very quickly that the people attending the course are a very ill-assorted group - ranging from elderly to relatively young and from all walks of life. It is clear that some of them have met in other situations and are not at all at ease with each other.

When the resident nymphomaniac is found dead Sophie comes into contact with Chris Groom - the investigating officer - who is rather too fond of Sophie for her liking. This is an exciting mystery with a satisfyingly complex plot which includes a pet rat called Sidney, a missing tutor and a very glamorous poet - not to speak of some Japanese tourists who seem to very much in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are some nail biting happenings at various points in the story and it is touch and go whether everyone is going to come out of it in one piece.

The book kept me reading because I cared about the characters - even Sidney - and I wanted to find out what happened and what was behind the mayhem. There are many touches of humour and Sophie is very far from being a perfect character which makes her all the more likeable.

Whodunnit? Judith Cutler's done it again!

Birmingham England is the city where Judith Cutler lives and writes and Birmingham is the venue for her crime novels. You can almost smell the sweat and grime of England's second largest city as the action hurries along the streets.

In Dying To Write, her heroine Sophie Rivers (lecturer by profession and sleuth by obligation) finds herself once again in the middle of the action sticking her nose into another murder case, upsetting the local police and falling foul of the baddies. Plot twists, red herrings and a final resolution that will have you panting with relief, this is crime fiction at its best.

And Judith should know as the secretary of the British crime writers association! Judith writes compelling fiction that just demands to be read. I have never read any of her books in over forty eight hours as I simply cannot put them down. Buy, sit down and enjoy a fast paced, page turning ride through a murder mystery. You won't be disappointed!

Had me crying at the first two sample pages.

This is the second review I've ever written in my lifetime. this one has earned my utmost respect and gratitude. It brought back memories and feelings from years ago that I thought I have long forgotten.
