Publisher's Summary:
Both a novel and a letter from a husband to his wife, Only Say the Word is a haunting, intimate testament to the enduring nature of love. Jim Foley loves his parents, his brother, his sister, Dickens, and God, although not necessarily in that order. Later, he loves Kate, enough to make her his wife; later still, he loves his children, Jack and Hannah.
This is Jim's story, from early days spent in County Clare to early adulthood in America, and back to Clare again. Tracing his journey from child to husband to father, from happy-ever-after to death-do-us-part, from beginnings to endings - and from there to starting afresh once more - it tells of the people and places in Jim's life, his hopes, fears, and fantasies, his ever-evolving relationships and the books that remain always constant.
Deeply-felt, beautifully-told, and written in Niall William's lyrical, lilting prose, Only Say the Word offers both acceptance of the past and hope for the future.

... waited and waited and read and read for something good to happen - never did
Quite a dark book - I waited and waited and read and read for something good to happen - never did. Would not recommend it - even though the writing was superb.
A Profoundly Touching Love Story...Life Story
Perhaps I'll read a thousand books in my life, hopefully more. Few will impact me as this one has, on so many levels. Easily the most beautifully written story I've ever read, this book is filled with wonderful imagery--vividly-descriptive poetic prose that stirred all my senses and tugged at the full range of my emotions. I smiled. I welled up and shed a tear or two. This is exactly how I aspire to write. On a personal level, I was blessed to begin reading this novel in Ireland at a time when love was very much on my mind and in my heart. Such confluence certainly lent magic to my reading experience. I will savor much more of Niall Williams' work in the very near future. Life is too short to put it off.
"Just this quiet movement, like a gentle current."
This book is wonderful. There's a line in the book that reads "just this quiet movement, like a gentle current." That's exactly how I would describe this book. This is the second book that I have read by this author (I also read The Fall of Light). His style of writing is so poetic and beautiful. The story is intimate, poignant and uplifting.
Premise:
A quiet Bibliophile named Jim Foley tries to reconcile the losses in his life through writing. The story skips from the present day (life with his two children) and back to Jim's childhood growing up in Ireland.
"In our family we are each like boats slipped from the moorings, out in deep waters, and utterly separate or tangled in our own nets of grief and loss." These words describe this man's family growing up and yet could also describe any family in similar circumstances.
Another moving book by Niall Williams
Every word Niall Williams selects for his work is exact--and what he writes is always moving and profound. Thank you.
