EU ambassadors have held an urgent meeting after U-S President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on opponents to his proposed Greenland takeover.

The president says he'll hit Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland with a 10 per cent tariff on goods on February 1st, rising to 25% in June.

The announcement came as thousands of people took to the streets in Denmark and Greenland to protest against the proposed US takeover.
