October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month.
I have known many people who have experienced infertility and miscarriages. Myself included. The grief that they, we, feel is very real.  In this episode we are fortunate to have Sarah join us to share her story, her journey. Sarah is someone who has struggled with infertility and pregnancy loss. She recognizes that even though she has her rainbow baby, that does not make her children from previous pregnancies less important.

So, we are technically on a break…not a Ross and Rachel break but a summer break.  I wanted to share a few things that might help when you have lost a person or a pet. I guess you can call it like a to do list. I have mentioned some of these things before but thought it might help just to repeat it.

So here we are episode 8! this is the last episode for season one. Season 2 airs September 1st! We are going to take a little break during July and August. Please stay subscribed because I just might drop bonus episodes and outtakes this summer.

We have talked about some pretty heavy stuff this season. And our world has had to deal with some sad stuff recently too. I wanted to end on more hopeful note and chat about something many of us love. The movies. Movies can transform transport inspire and make us feel all the feels. I got to thinking about movies and grief. There's some movies that no matter how many times I watched them I'll always cry. Today I have a short list of movies that deal with grief. Now this is not going to be like an actual review of each of these films but more of how certain scenes really hit the mark. I chose some not so current films but hey spoiler alerts! The films are: Sleepless in Seattle, Return to Me, Ghost, Marley and Me and My Girl.

  • Loss of Time

    Send us Fan Mail

This episode is about the loss of time specifically related to the pandemic. So many times, we grieve because we have lost getting to spend time with our loved ones because they died. We just wanted a little more time. But what happens when we lose time but not the person? we were fortunate to sit down with a teacher this spring to talk about loss of time with her students to due the pandemic. But as I was thinking about it, this is not the first time nor the last time parents and teachers and kids lose time with each other or in the classroom. It happens when schools are hit by tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis. It also happens when parents and loved ones are in the military or they work long hours and they miss out on moments with their children. I mean there a million different scenarios here.  Today we will hear how one special teacher found ways to connect, stay positive and keep caring.

  • Pet Grief

    Send us Fan Mail

When I was working on show topics I knew I had to devote an episode to pet grief. Pets have become such a big part of our world, our life, our families. We make room in our world for them, take them on trips with us, take their photos and worry about their happiness.  So it makes sense that when our pet dies we grieve the loss of a family member.  We will talk to pet parents Valerie Nelson and Alex Darian regarding their pet grief. We will also chat with Dr. Andrea Laurent-Simpson, author of "Just Like Family: How companion animals joined the household".
Valerie Nelson grew up always having animals around.  She also helps with pet rescue. Valerie’s beloved cat Oscar recently passed away. She currently resides in the country with her husband, the dogs, cats and cows.
Alex Darian is a Dallas area realtor. She lost her chihuahua Big Daddy in 2015. She has since rescued two more small dogs.
Dr. Andrea Laurent-Simpson is currently a Research Assistant Professor and Lecturer of Sociology at Southern Methodist University. She is the author of "Just Like Family: How companion animals joined the household". This book examines pets changing role and relationships in modern US families. Her award-winning work engages identity theory, family and fertility, and human-nonhuman animal interaction.  Her research uses original, qualitative research to examine how family membership is impacted by human-nonhuman animal relationships in the United States; how the household structure affects how dogs and cats are identified in the family; how this contributes to post-modern, cultural definitions of who counts as family; and how dropping fertility rates aid in the emergence of a “multi-species” family.
