Don is the founder of Coaching at End of Life, LLC.  He is a pastor and a Master Certified Coach (accredited by the International Coach Federation).  He is the author of the books Coaching at End of Life and Coach Yourself Through Grief.  Don has a passion to help people live fully until they die.

Don talks about the "great privilege" of being with someone when they are dying. He also describes his role in that journey as being a helper. Don says "the focus of being with the dying isn't helping them to die. It's helping them to live fully until that moment that they die".

Grief Coach Jenna Bonner is answering a common question today - What is a Child Life Specialist? To help her answer this question, she is sitting down with Samantha Bonner (yes, they are family). Samantha holds a recreational therapy degree and is a certified Child Life Specialist. She currently works as a Certified Child Life Specialist at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis and is a Certified Yoga teacher. Today's topic is something that a lot of people dread, that's Pet Loss. Your host and Grief Coach Jenna Bonner is welcoming her friend and past college roommate, Kathryn McMillan to the show to discuss the journey of pet loss. 

Kathryn shares that she was in her 30's when she had her "first pet" that she shared with her ex-husband. After taking on a care-giving role, Kathryn quickly fell in love with the Boxer named Keller who unfortunately had degenerative myelopathy and eventually ended up in a wheelchair. 

Kathryn's company is FCL Builders. She is the Director of Business Development for a national construction firm and has been with the company over four years. She travels across the U.S. supporting customer relationships and building new ones.

If you've never heard the phrase "disenfranchised grief" - this episode will introduce you to a real-life example, and a lot of you will relate to it. Disenfranchised grief is when a person loses something or someone important, but their loss is not valued or recognized by others. The term was coined by Dr. Kenneth J. Doka in 1989. This concept describes the fact that some forms of grief are not acknowledged on a personal or societal level in modern day Eurocentric culture.

Grief Coach Jenna Bonner welcomes her husband Jairus back to the show for a tasty and meaningful "Grief & Food" topic. Jenna recalls her volunteer experience with a local Hospice group and the creative way they shared the beautiful connection of grief and food. 

Jairus is sharing stories about his late Grandmother - and her famous Pound Cake! Jenna took on the task of making her recipe so they could sample the memories while talking about her. Jairus remembers how this pound cake brought the family together. 

Here is "Momma's Pound Cake" Recipe:

Ingredients:

1 - 1lb box Domino Confectioners Sugar

2 - cups - Cake Flour (Swans Down)

2 - sticks -salted butter (Land O Lakes salted butter

6 - large eggs (Egg lands Best or organic eggs)

1 - teaspoon - pure vanilla extract (Mccormick)

1 -teaspoon - pure lemon extract (McCormick)

1 - Fluted Tube Pan - (I purchased at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or check Ross or Burlington)

1 -9”x 11” sheet cake baking pan

1 - can Baker’s Joy (the original non-stick baking spray with flour)

Preheat Oven at 350 degrees

Mix Ingredients:

Sift cake flour 5x’s in a bowl and put it aside.  Lightly grease fluted tube pan (Baker’s Joy)

Using an electric mixer beat butter well. Then gradually add confectioners' sugar and mix until creamy.  Add eggs one at a time and beat well after each egg is added until creamy. Gradually add the sifted cake flour to the creamy mixture and mix well.  Add vanilla extract.  Beat. Then add lemon extract. Beat. Mix well but do not over beat. (may make cake dry) 

Fill the 91/2” x 11” baking pan (or just a long baking pan) with water less than half full and place in oven on rack above Momma’s pound cake.  It keeps the cake from cooking too fast.  It works! I guarantee!  Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees.  Use a toothpick to check to see if cake is done. Enjoy!

Grief Coach Jenna Bonner welcomes her husband Jairus Bonner to this episode to talk about their own personal journey with their two-year-old son Miles. As parents, Jenna and Jairus are grieving the loss Jenna's father recently - which also means their son Miles is grieving too.

After experiencing much loss in her life, Jenna really felt that God wanted to do something in her with all the pain and loss. She felt as though she was experiencing it for good in order to help others.
