Grim Greetings! Every so often we will do an episode called "I Do What I Want," a series featuring episodes on a lighter note, no book reports, just talking. We are giving you Grim Heathens a break from the doom and gloom (ourselves too). Listen in as we discuss The Witcher, Twilight, SouthPark, books we are reading, and a bunch of other stuff. Enjoy!
Victor LaVelle's The Ballad of Black Tom (2016) illustrates weird fiction at its finest. Listen in as we discuss the author, the story that inspired this one, Cthululu mythos, H. P. Lovecraft's controversial legacy, and of course an array of topics that make us go on tangents. Trigger warning(s): foul language, the story's horror and gore, and SPOILERS. Acoustics were written, recorded, and composed by David Gamble.
Grim Greetings! Listen to us discuss the coming-of-age story Bless Me Ultima (1972) by Chicano author Rudolpho Anaya. Trigger Warning(s): 1) SPOILERS 2) foul language 3) disturbing topics. Acoustics were written, recorded, and composed by David Gamble. Stay reading Grim Heathens!
This week we discuss Jason Reynolds' young adult novel Long Way Down (2017). We address stats of gun violence in rural communities, generational trauma, toxic masculinity, lost loved ones, and mental health as well as adult cartoons, parallels from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Disney's Encanto, and Shameless. Of course, we have also included some comedy about what it's like recording a podcast at home with our loved ones. Our original Grim Company theme songs are composed, written, and recorded by musician David Gamble. Trigger warning(s): discussions of gun violence, foul language, and overall sensitive topics about life and death.
Listen in as we talk about the many controversies of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899). Trigger warning(s): 1) there are spoilers 2) these topics might be sensitive to some listeners--disturbing/frightening content specifically during the period of imperialism which involved slavery, racism, discrimination, and many other societal mistakes & 3) foul language. Our original Grim Company acoustics are composed, written, and recorded by musician David Gamble.
