Hi, I’m Joe Cadwell the host of Grit NW and I want to personally thank you for checking out my podcast.
Whether you’ve been following the show for a while or are a new listener, thank you for being here.
The goal of Grit NW has been and always will be to inspire its listeners to Understand, Value and Protect our union and all it provides.
Additionally, I try to foster and develop a sense of pride within our ranks, acknowledging that as builders of this nations infrastructure and wealth we deserve to hold our heads high.
I do all this by interviewing industry leaders and subject matter experts.
With over 40 episodes to choose from, I am certain you will find content that will enlighten, educate, and inform you.
For example, if you’re interested in wealth management and personal finance, be sure to check out Season 2’s episode on Financial Management Strategies. I spoke with Patrick Town from Union Home Plus and Jonny Flavin from Aspire Capitol. These guys really know their stuff and have tons of great information to share on how you can put your hard-earned dollars to work for you.
Maybe inspiring human-interest stories are more your thing. If so, be sure to check out the hugely popular Carpenter Stories series, where I interview people, whose lives were radically transformed for the better after joining an organized labor union.
Speaking of transforming lives What about learning the crucial role politics plays on a day-to-day basis in the lives of union carpenters and the working middle class?
If so, you will want to hear nationally recognized public speaker and worker rights advocate Mark McDermott. I’ve had the pleasure to talk with Mark on numerous occasions and trust me he doesn’t pull any punches when he explains why trades people can’t afford not to be involved in their union. It’s great information delivered in a direct and no non-sense fashion. Be sure to check it out.
Ready to learn something new to take your career to the next level?
If so, checkout my ongoing series called “Skills to Pay the Bills.” There you will hear from industry experts on how you can gain the knowledge, certifications, and experience to make a difference in your ability to provide for yourself and your family. From ICRA to Welding, these episodes hit the spot when it comes to career advancement.
And finally, I am

Work is tough, and for sure you got to be tough to be in construction.
But having issues on the job that aren’t directly related to the challenges of being a professional trades person can definitely make for some long days and foster low morale.
Sound familiar? Maybe you’re dealing with issues on your jobsite right now?
Being asked regularly to work through your scheduled breaks?
Job shack or porta-johns not up to speed?
Concerns with your pay?
For many union members, especially new members, or apprentices, dealing with these issues head on and by themselves may be out of their comfort zone.
So what do you? Contact your council rep?
Sure, that’s an option, but calling in the big guns shouldn’t always be your first choice.
How about looking into the contract yourself? See what it says?
Well, that’s a possibility, but I’ll be the first one to admit that contract language can sometimes be confusing and filled with ambiguity making them difficult to decipher and understand.
So where do you turn?
Well, in this episode of Grit NW we’ll look into the role and responsibilities of union stewards on the job, and why they are so important in keeping a worksite running smoothly.
Hi, I’m Joe Cadwell, the writer producer and host of Grit NW and today I talk with Council Rep and local 70 member Paul Galovin.
Paul is a steward advocate and trainer, and he is going to help us understand what rank-and-file members take on when they step up to the union steward position.
Well learn what personality traits make a good steward and how they develop the skills necessary to become effective jobsite organizers, negotiators, counselors, peacemakers and guardians of our contracts.
This episode is part of my effort to recognize opportunities within our organization for members to step-up and take ownership of their union and their future.

In this episode I look into the role and responsibilities of the Union Delegate.
Delegates are elected by the members, to represent their local union at the regional level, and play an important role in shaping the direction of the union.
Delegates bring forward, and vote on decisions that can affect the lives and livelihoods of their constituents and their families. These decisions include operating budgets, organizing direction, and political endorsements.
Delegates are also responsible for electing the Executive Committee members, including the Executive Secretary-Treasurer or EST, the President, and the Vice-President.
The role of delegate is hugely important in any well-functioning organization and today I have the pleasure of speaking with NW Carpenters representative, local 146 member and union delegate Don Stover.
Hi, I’m Joe Cadwell the writer, producer and host of Grit NW. I am also President of the NW Carpenters Union and I can speak from personal experience the value in working closely with councils’ delegates to affect positive change for our members.
We’ll start today’s conversation by learning what Don feels he has gained since being elected to the position and more importantly what he has been able to give back.
Next, we will discuss, what qualities Don feels a delegate needs to have to be effective in their roll.
Later we will look at the responsibilities of a delegate and how the decisions they make can have huge repercussions on the operation of our crafts.
And we will wrap up our conversation by giving you the information you need if you are interested in becoming a leader in our union by running for the office of delegate.
This episode is part of my effort to recognize opportunities within our organization for members to step-up and take ownership of their union and their future.

Welcome to another edition of Skills to Pay the Bills,
a special series within the Grit Nation podcast, built to help listeners from the Northwest Carpenters Union better understand the numerous services, benefits and training available to them as dues paying members.
In today’s episode we meet Daniel Del Real, President of the Local 146 and representative for the Northwest Carpenters Union.
Daniel will talk with us about, ICRA or Infection Control Risk Assessment training and why now more than ever it is needed to ensure the health and safety of our members, hospital staff and patients when doing construction projects in health care facilities.
We’ll start our conversation by learning about the need for ICRA certified construction industry professionals and how the UBC and our regional training centers are rising to meet this challenge.
Next, we’ll look into what the different types of training are and how they differ from each other.
We’ll then investigate why our Regional Council Representatives are getting trained to teach ICRA and how this training can benefit our union members and contractors.
And we will wrap up our conversation by giving you the information you need to get trained in this valuable and emerging industry.

Brand recognition is hugely important in developing trust and allegiance to products, teams, and organizations.
Brand logos can offer visual markers, that trigger emotional responses buried deep in our subconscious.
Advertising agencies understand this and literally capitalize on our inherent desire to identify with merchandise, services or even other like-minded individuals who sport the same brand.
Don’t believe me?
Try this, close your eyes, unless you’re driving that is, and picture what first comes to mind when I say the word…. McDonalds.
Well, if your anything like me you see the golden arches.
How about Nike? See that iconic swoosh?
Yep, me too.
Now try… Target. There it is, the red bullseye. The name is, literally the logo.
This mental imagery can greatly influence your decisions and emotions and is the reason savvy organizations from sports teams to corporations put so much emphasis on getting the right look for their logo.
For unions curating brand recognition in the form of t-shirt’s, hats and stickers can pay off in many ways including member pride, solidarity, and allegiance.
This is especially important for unions because our ability to identify with and gather strength from our fellow brother and sister carpenters is crucial for our ability to grow and prosper.
On todays show I’ll be talking with Greg Mooseker from the Frank Doolittle Company, based in Bellevue, Washington.
Frank Doolittle has been in the business of providing Union and USA made products with custom designs to organizations across America and Canada for over 30 years.
In this episode you will hear what goes into the design and manufacturing of brand worthy logos and how the Union employees of this NW business go above and beyond to meet their customers’ expectations.
