Welcome to The Spotlight,
On today’s show we meet Karen Dove, Executive Director for ANEW and Amesha Lawton of the Urban League. Both run programs in Washington State that provide assistance for our carpenter apprentices and those interested in becoming professional craftspeople in the building trades.
We’ll start our conversation by learning what the ANEW program is and how Karen orchestrates the distribution of funds to help offset the financial burdens many apprentices experience while learning their craft.
She will then talk with us about RISE UP and its goal of creating jobsites that are respectful and inclusive through education and accountability.
Next, Amesha will introduce us to her valuable work at The Urban League. We will discuss how this grant funded program delivers much needed assistance to those in underrepresented and disadvantage communities when looking for opportunities to better their lives through careers in the trades.
This episode highlights primarily apprentice and pre-apprentice programs in the Washington State with a focus on the Seattle Puget Sound Area. To find career enhancing opportunities in Southwestern Washington and Oregon State, check out my interview with Penny Painter from the AKANA organization.
If you know a group or initiative that would be a good candidate for The Spotlight, please send me an email to [email protected]. Be sure to include the contact information for the organization and how it has contributed to better the lives of our members.

Bob will share with us the personnel and informative experiences he has gathered over the last 19 years as a fulltime organizer for the IBEW.
We’ll start todays conversation by learning about his introduction into the trades as an apprentice electrician, his time as a student at The National Labor College, and what ultimately led him onto a career as a union organizer.
Then, we’ll discover why he decided 20 years ago to write his first book, titled,

Welcome to another edition of Fight Club, the call to action’ segment within the Grit Northwest Podcast.
Fight Club is built to educate and motivate you act on issues that directly affect your ability to provide for yourself and your family.
Fight Club is not for excuse makers or finger pointers.
If standing proud, with your brothers and sisters to protect what we have is not your cup of tea, you can stop listening now.
Fight Club members care about their careers and aren’t afraid to put in the effort to protect it. They don’t assume or expect someone else to do the heavy lifting needed to strengthen their union and better their lives.
Fight Club members roll up their sleeves and get involved, they understand and appreciate that a union is only as strong as its members.
Our guest today is Jeff Thorson with the NW Carpenters Union Contracts Negotiation Department and a member of the Local 196.
Jeff will explain what efforts the Regional Council is taking to prepare for negotiations in the coming year, and why member engagement is crucial when bargaining for the best possible agreements for our members.
He will inform us which contracts are open in 2021, and then enlighten us about the extensive training taking place to equip volunteer rank and file members to best represent the interest of their respective locals.

Hi,
I’m Joe Cadwell, the writer, producer and host of Grit NW and I am pleased to introduce you to a new series within the podcast, called Carpenter Stories.
Carpenter Stories will introduce you to a variety of people within our craft and organization who have experienced transformative changes in their lives for the better after having found a career as a professional craftsperson.
In today’s episode we will meet Chadwick Davis. Chadwick is a journey level carpenter from the Local 1503 in Portland Oregon. I first met Chadwick when he was a student at PNCI, The Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute where I am employed as an instructor and apprentice coordinator.
I was impressed by Chadwick’s life story, his struggles with substance abuse, homelessness, and incarceration.
I was even more impressed by how he faced these challenges head on and overcame the harsh reality of a life spiraling out of control to become a husband, father, homeowner, and Journeyman Carpenter in the UBC.
I feel that these types of stories are important to share, because they shine a light onto what belonging to an organized labor union can do.
Collectively bargained wages, benefits, training, and representation provided the foundation and structure for people to build lives around and careers to be proud of. Those stories deserve to be heard.
So, sit back and listen to Chadwick Davis’s, Carpenter Story.
