Grounded in Maine

Anjel B Hartwell and I are talking about planning a sustainable business, and no one better for this conversation than the Wealthy Life Mentor! Anjel has had ALL the experiences in business, and she uses them to make her the mentor that she is. She tells us how she started and about choices she made that weren't ideal, but still shaped her and added to her understanding. And that brings the wisdom to guide others.

Anjel is a member of the New England Podcasters Group - that's how I got to know her. She currently is the host of 2 podcasts: Wickedly Smart Women and Leading Visionaries. She was one of the first, if not the first person to sell a podcast, showing just how badass she is. She talks about leveraging virtual speaking engagements to gain exposure to millions and opportunities to earn money.

She also is a mom and forager and cooks up a storm, and has stories to share about all.

I just loved Anjel's message she wanted you to remember from our talk: "Getting support for building the business you are dreaming of is essential." I hope you enjoy this conversation - I sure did!

I really enjoyed learning about Cleaner Safer Water from Mark Miller, the CEO and Founder of this affordable, lifetime water filtration system. It just makes sense to have something like this in case of power outage. I'm still in awe of not having to buy filters for it ever, AND that it can provider water for up to 300 people! 1 system could take care of a whole neighborhood!

Mark tells us all about the system, and gives some examples of how it works, and how helpful it has been for people who have it. These are Mark's words:

"There is now a guaranteed way for you to have pure water for life. Enough for you, your family, and up to 300 other people in any emergency no matter how long it lasts. Even if there is no electricity. And a way to help the ecosystem by drastically reducing the number of plastic water bottles. You can now have better health with pure water for life and always be prepared for any emergency." You know I'm all about the reducing plastic water bottles part; but providing water to 300 neighbors is pretty attractive!

Oh my gosh, Lynne Bowman was such a pleasure to spend time with! She is an absolute hoot, full of energy, and is adamant that we NOT diet - we should be eating intentionally, for enjoyment. She'll tell us all about it in this conversation. We're talking about preventing chronic disease and being overall healthy and happy!

When asked what message Lynne wanted people to get from this conversation, she simply said "eat joyfully." And she brags about her gorgeous new cookbook Brownies For Breakfast, with not just fave recipes, but stories from around her table, where all the best moments happen. I've attached a link to Amazon, where you can pick up the book, but she also shows several pictures on the Grounded in Maine YouTube channel.

I had so much fun talking with Matthew Lesko! He's encouraging people to apply for grants to fund big ticket upgrades, updates, etc. He says "the money's there; YOU might as well have it!"

He worked for 50 years for the wealthy, finding them more money, but now is helping the underdog to get ahead, because he can. He says it doesn't pay him a lot, but he actually feels good about his work now.

Matthew is a trip! He has more energy than 5 people - he hosts almost daily a live chat with up to 15,000 people looking for ways to find funding for projects and life. He sometimes doesn't sound very serious, but then he inserts a phrase like "it makes you human, and it's hard to flunk a human; it's easy to flunk a robot." I'm so happy to have found him so he can share his tips with you! Learn more in this full conversation -

I recommend checking out Matthew's website or YouTube channel to see how he helps, and the magnitude of his gift.

Merrymeeting Food Council reached out to me to ask if we could help to get the word out about their Farm Skills Program, because the deadline to apply for the next cohort is this Saturday, February 1. If you miss this cohort, they will still take applications for the next.
Maine has set a BIG goal of eliminating food insecurity by 2030 (FIVE YEARS), and their plan includes growing more locally.

Have you thought about farming at all, or gardening large scale? This is an incredible opportunity in my home state of Maine, and I'm going to be looking into where else this might be an option, because we need more farmers - we're losing them at an alarming rate, and with education from organizations like Merrymeeting Food Council, people can be set up for success!

Please look into whether you have something like a Farm Skills Program near you, or take a Master Gardener Class, check out gardening books or classes, or volunteer at a farm near you for experience - knowing where our food comes from is becoming more important every day. This conversation is so informative and excited for the next generation of farmers in Maine. Maybe you could help your area (if you're not in Maine) organize a Farm Skills Program!

Learn more by listening here-

See Merrymeeting Food Council's website for more info on the incredible work they're doing here:
https://www.merrymeetingfoodcouncil.org/

The Farm Skills specific link is here: https://www.merrymeetingfoodcouncil.org/farm-skills

And get involved in your own community, PLEASE!

The algorithm was just right not too long ago that I happened upon Seb Jagoe's Instagram reel and became obsessed with his excitement and vast knowledge about soil and growing. It's always a little nerve wracking to reach out cold to a stranger, but this time, at least, Seb was just so gracious to talk with me and share this message.

I've had many conversations about soil health on the podcast, but Seb's energy alone is exciting, and different. He talks about the history of soil health, and also when he first started talking about soil. We also discuss the importance of taking care of our soil; how it's not a thing - it's a process. He talks a. lot about Indigenous Knowledge, and food forests, and how the white men took food forests over from the Native Americans and depleted them with so many of our current practices (weed and pest control, monocropping, to name a couple).

He has big plans to educate as many people as possible through his social media videos to share his passion for nutrient dense foods and attracting pollinators - all without fertilizers and pest control - because healthy soil and plants will ward off pests naturally!

Seb asks that we consider quality over convenience whenever possible. The  waste from overconsumption and cheap junk is poisoning our water and soil currently. He said when asked what the word sustainability means to him that sustainability isn't good enough - and he's not wrong! Who wants things to continue as they are, after all? Don't we want better? If not for ourselves, for the next generation? What an enlightening conversation! Listen here!

I've been following Angela Hollowell for a couple of years now on Linkedin, and admiring all that she's doing with her podcast Honey and Hustle, and her writing and now documentary film making. When she said she's joined a new group that she's excited about and asked if anyone wanted to hear about it, I saw my chance and said YES PLEASE! She recently joined Dogwood Alliance - info is below:

Dogwood Alliance is an environmental nonprofit organization based in Asheville, North Carolina. The group works to achieve broad-based support to end unsustainable forestry practices in the region. They focus in the marketplace to move large paper producers and customers away from sourcing their paper from endangered forests and towards increasing the use of post-consumer recycled fiber and other environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Angela's company Rootful Media is committed to inclusive visual storytelling that promotes community-building, meaningful conversations, exceeded fundraising goals, and lasting change. Rootful Media works with regional organizations and national enterprises to amplify diverse groups and voices. I was able to watch the trailer on zoom of the documentary Trail Therapy, which is wonderful - telling the story of Sharon, a therapist who offers sessions while walking outside, as opposed to in a sterile room, to breathe in the fresh air and the scenery. She's also working on, or finishing up now, another documentary about forever chemicals that I'm really interested to learn more about.

And her podcast Honey and Hustle is SO good! She focuses on business owners in NC that are doing great things - always an engaging conversation!

Bronwyn Holm is an international speaker and spokesperson for Earth Food, a product of living microbiomes to feed our soil, and at the same time battle food insecurity and turn our health issues around. HOW, you ask? Bron talks at length of the benefits of Earth Food in this conversation, and she is SO proud of its capabilities, and rightfully so! She is sharing her message of saving  our soil, which will raise the nutritional value of the food that we buy and  make - even as a lazy farmHER (Bron's term)!

Earth Food has been in Bron's family for decades. She went off after school to do other business ventures, but came back to embrace EarthFood and bring it forward to the masses. in her own words (in her brochure) " It took 27 years perfecting Earthfood. It is not just about nurturing plants; it is cultivating a thriving ecosystem for growing all plants."

This conversation with Bobby Donohue had me so fired up excited for the future!

Bobby has single handedly developed an outstanding educational platform for school kids to teach them about climate change in a positive way, so they can problem solve with creativity and hope, and not doom and gloom. He also developed a track just for teachers, to help kids understand some of the more complex topics! This program is now streaming into 86 countries and 1000 schools and counting!

Bobby has such a great energy for education, and has been motivated by considering his own children's future, and really, what better motivation is there? And I learned about the STEAM method of teaching/learning - Bobby's love for the arts is very apparent, and I'm so grateful he was here to share it. (We also had SO much fun!)

Here's his message he hopes to leave us all with, in his words: "Everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future, no matter their resources or background. By educating the next generation with optimism and practical tools, we empower them to take ownership of the planet’s future. Small, achievable actions—whether at home, in schools, or in the community—can collectively create meaningful change."

If you're a teacher, or a parent hoping to help your child learn more about climate change, please find Bobby at his website: https://planetbonehead.com/

David Auge is a fascinating person who has been in the sustainability realm for a while now, so understands it on a much deeper level than some (possibly a lot) of us. So much so, that he just had a book published by the name of this episode - Man's Search for Sustainability. He talks about a book that he was inspired by, Man's Search for Meaning, by Victor Frankl.

In his book, David focuses on bees and locusts - how we consider one more valuable than another, their differences and their strengths, and how they relate to sustainability - that is fascinating! Something I certainly never considered before, but I'm so glad David and I discussed it!

These are David's words: "Sustainability is a normative term - one that describes a lot. As a result, it describes comparative choices in a journey - not an end point." It's about the journey, not the destination...
