Many adults have emotional pain or trauma that can hinder, harm, and hold them back throughout their life. In this episode, we want to share with you 5 steps that you can take to re-claim control over your pain and your life.
Acknowledge that you are in pain and that it is affecting your life
Admit that you can't carry this alone any more
Recognize that you need help to heal
Understand that there are others who can help you to work through the healing process
Therapists (psychologists / counselors), Pastors, Psychiatrists
Seek help with an open heart and mind
You have to share openly and honestly the things you have gone through
Be open to their thoughts, advice, and perspectives. They see things that you don't see and will have perspectives that will help you to work through what has happened
This is a judgement free place....but expect the counselor to help you to see the situation in ways to help you to own your role in the situations so that you can act differently in the future (don't repeat the same painful or harmful behaviors)
Healing is a process and not an event
It can take months to years to unpack all the layers that have built up over your lifetime
Forgiveness is the ultimate healing
In time, you will need to forgive yourself and/or those that hurt you so that the past pain will no longer have power over you.
This doesn't mean that we forget what happened, but we choose to take away it's power over us through the healing power of forgiveness. Sometimes this means we can forgive the person, and other times if we can not forgive the person, it simply means that we acknowledge and process the pain and release the power it has over our lives
