  • 165 | Adopting the Membership Model to Create Community with Robbi Baxter

If you’re a service based business owner, then you’ll want to lean into this episode. More than likely, you have thought about or have found that the membership model could be advantageous not only to you but to your customers as well. Our guest for this episode is Robbi Baxter- an expert in the membership model. Listen in to how you can adopt the membership model to your business that potentially create genuine community and connection (what we all crave at the deepest level!)

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: For the last 15 years, Robbi has been consulting with organizations that utilize a subscription model and elements of membership. She focuses her work on entrepreneurs who care about carrying on an ongoing formal relationship with their members.

[spp-tweet ""The subscription model is the ‘forever transaction’ ~Robbi Baxter"]

Why is membership such a good business model for young businesses? According to Robbi, it’s recurring, predictable, and creates revenue streams forever. As she calls it, it’s the “forever transaction.” This model works well because it is as equally great for customers as it is for the business owners. For the customers, it helps them to achieve their goals and needs. Consider psychologist Abraham Maslow’s theory on the hierarchy of needs. Once basic needs are taken care of (food and shelter) people naturally want more in life. They can then focus on higher needs such as relationships and being part of a community. People naturally desire to be held in high esteem by their peers. This can all be achieved through this ongoing model.

According to Robbi, the idea of acommunity stands for a group of people that come together over a common need or interest. The service based business or organization serves as an umbrella to bring everyone together. There’s so much potential to help your customers by letting them talk to each other in addition to having your (the business) direct service. The idea includes online communities as well as providing opportunities for physical connection as well.

[spp-tweet "“There’s so much potential to help your customers by letting them talk to each other” ~Robbi Baxter"]

Think about it: the people coming to you for your expertise could also be benefitting from people who are also on that journey. It creates additional information to be taken away by the customer without the additional work on the coach’s part.

Keep in mind that building a community requires a lot of hard work. You need to focus on enrolling people ready to engage. You must invest early on to gather a core of active people. They also must be on the cutting edge of the topic in order to set the tone of aspiration . That way- there will be those people asking the deeper more poignant questions and can answer questions for those behind them (following their lead). That’s also what attracts new people.

[spp-tweet "“Having an attitude that you’ll be constantly tinkering with the different offerings is important” ~Robbi Baxter"]

You can also have Tiers of membership. The basic membership is usually free forever (think: Linkedin- most don’t pay). This is needed because it gives value. It makes total sense to have both a free and paid option respectively.

Robbi also touches on the subject of Facebook. The advantage business owners have with Facebook is that it’s great for discovery and great for entry. BUT it’s not yours- you don’t have complete control in regards to the experience you intend for your members. This is because, simply, it’s not designed for vibrant communities. It’s designed for updates. Nevertheless, Facebook is a good place to start and you can invite them to other places as you connect on this platform.

[spp-tweet "“Put your customers at the center of what you do- not your product” ~Robbi Baxter"]

Some success stories Robbi has witnessed include Allan Weiss who coaches the independent consultant. Over the past 10 years, has tinkered with subscription models and also offers events. You pay once to join and have access for a lifetime. Then he has some more expensive membership options. Allan keeps trying different things. Sometimes it doesn't work. However, Robbi has seen that having an attitude that you’ll be constantly tinkering with the different offerings is important. Also, take Amazon for example too. This company has also been tinkering with different models. It really comes down to not being afraid to try new things and dropping what doesn’t work.

[spp-tweet "“You’ve got to be in love with your customers” ~Robbi Baxter"]

Robbi suggests putting your customers at the center of what you do (not your product!). This will cause a huge mind shift for you. You’ve got to be in love with your customers and committed to keep identifying their needs. Know that this will change all the time.

    In this episode, we’ll cover
    • How the membership model benefits business owners
    • How the membership model benefits customers
    • The importance of having different membership options
    • Why tinkering with different modes is essential
    • Why your customer is the center of everything
    • How communities help both the customer and business owner thrive
    Practical and Actionable

Go back to your mission (the forever transaction). What’s the problem you can solve for them forever? What are you in the business of? What would justify a forever transaction? Think of it from the angle that you are solving a problem. How can you solve this problem on an ongoing basis in such a way that this problem never returns?

  • 174 | A Constant Flow of Ideal Clients with Dov Gordon

Every business, yes every business, needs clients to survive. Find out in this episode what it takes to get a steady flow of ideal clients. I interview Dov Gordon who coaches entrepreneurs to create a steady flow of ideal clients. Dov shares a simple set of questions to help you on your journey.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

[spp-tweet "“You need to find the people looking for your work” ~Dov Gordon"]

Target Audience: Dov focuses on coaches and consultants. He specifically chooses to work with those who are masters of their craft (rather than those seeking quick success). His service is for those who have an inner knowing that they are meant to make an impact and are ready to work on it.

[spp-tweet "“The worst thing you can do for others is that which they could do for themselves” ~Abraham Lincoln"]

      What is an ideal client?
    • An ideal client respects you
    • An ideal client is ready, able and willing to pay for the value you bring
    • An ideal client will endorse you to others

Dov advises to seek those looking for your help. The only reason to have a niche is to formulate a clear message.

ABOUT THEM: getting attention and interests of your ideal clients...
    • What problems do you help solve? And, what results do you enable?
    • Who has those problems?
    • Who wants those results?
    ABOUT YOU: What you want...
    • What are the qualities and characteristics does your ideal client have?

[spp-tweet "“You can't convince someone that they need your help” ~Dov Gordon"]

Creating a constant lead flow and the questions you want to evoke in their heads with these SIX elements...
    1. Should i pay attention? Is it interesting? (remember, it’s a problem they have and don't want + a result they want but don't have)
    2. Can I trust you? That you care and are able?
    3. Is what you recommend right for me?
    4. Then, give them a taste: a hand raising free offer (webinar, product.. etc) and getting noticed…
    5. The sales conversation
    6. Your irresistible and compelling offer.

[spp-tweet "“Most people are putting their time and attention on the wrong things” ~Dov Gordon"]

    In this episode we’ll cover:
    • What an ideal client actually is
    • Why it’s best to seek those looking for your help
    • Getting the attention of your ideal clients
    • Understanding what you want in your ideal client
    • The 6 steps to follow in creating a steady flow of leads
    Practical and Actionable:

Answer these 3 q’s.. (hint: it is best to gain feedback from a coach here):

    1. What problems do you help solve? And, what results do you enable?
    2. Who has those problems?
    3. Who wants those results?

[spp-tweet "“It is really hard to refer someone to a generalist” ~Chala Dincoy"]

Why is there so much resistance towards niching down in the marketplace?

According to Chala, when it comes to established biz owners who consider themselves creatives, they desire a variety of work. They want to work with different industries and different problems. The other problem is that they aren’t marketing but rather are waiting for referrals. Chala says, when you are not known for something specific (i.e- you are not an extreme expert) It is really hard to refer someone to a generalist. So in turn, they also don’t receive many referrals either because their service is so generalized.

[spp-tweet "“It’s much easier to get to people when you are specific” ~Chala Dincoy"]

Chala found herself in the trenches herself when she couldn’t figure out her own niche. What she took away from her experience in the trenches was 3 very telling criteria. Your niche must be:

    1. Fit for you, your personality and skill set. Passion + skillful. Score them on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest)
    2. Dollar potential (score this on a scale of 1-10 - 10 being the highest)
    3. Access (score this on a scale of 1-10 - 10 being the highest)

Add up the 3 scores. Then compare them with the different combos of different niches. You can then logically compare and this provides a very black and white perspective on what direction to take.

Chala shares an example of a client of hers who wasn’t sure if they should specialize in closet organizing or garage organizing. Research revealed there was way more profit in garage organizing and less hours of work. It also positioned her client to stand out. It bugs Chala when people let gurus or CEO’s tell them what their niche is. What Chala helps people do after they narrow their niche down is ask the people in that niche if they’d actually purchase the services. This validates the niche in a real way!

[spp-tweet "“71% of the hiring managers are looking for specialists” ~Chala Dincoy"]

What about people who can’t have enough solid conversations/interviews?

Chala says… There is no excuse! Chala has turned walking through this process into a 2 day workshop.
Day 1: Prearrange 15 different calls. 5 calls are delegated for each of the 3 narrowed down niches. Her clients also prepare a questionnaire with the purpose of narrowing down the needs based on the conversations they have.
Day 2: Is about taking the data and modifying their messaging and marketing plan to match their niche is.
The 2- day workshop supports them and keeps them accountable.

    [spp-tweet "“I don’t believe in competition ~Chala Dincoy"]

Most people think they are narrow enough, but they really are not. Another example Chala shares is one of her clients who was a “Child to Parent Violence Therapist.” The client was niched in the WHAT but not niched in terms of the WHO. By narrowing down, this client has re- niched her working with lawyers on trial as an expert witness. This brings in more money than working with parents. The other part of her business continues as her base but this new niche is what makes her money.

[spp-tweet "“We all have our special strengths and magic” ~Chala Dincoy"]

    In this episode we’ll cover:
    • Why generalists don’t get referrals
    • Why those who specialize get the most referrals
    • How to calculate the best niche for you
    • Why being more specific helps you stand out
    • Why being niched down brings in more money
    • How identifying your niche is very black & white (logical)

[spp-tweet "“It bugs me when people let gurus or CEO’s tell them what their niche is” ~Chala Dincoy"]

As entrepreneurs, we can get caught up in the business side of things. There’s so much to think about: funnels, list building, package pricing, website design, and the list just goes on and on. Today’s guest- Rich Litvin, co- author of The Prosperous Coach believes all that business ‘stuff’ falls right into place when the individual is in FLOW. FLOW is who we truly are minus our limiting belief systems. It is who we are without fear. As a coach, Rich has made it his aim to help those who want to help themselves by cleaning up the lens they see through. Through the practice of deep coaching, asking powerful questions and showing up as purely authentic, we can all be the types of coaches who make shift happen for our clients.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Target Audience: Rich works with the kinds of people who don't need a coach. These are powerful people playing a big a game. His work also includes leading a community of coaches. His clients include athletes, Hollywood film directors, solo entrepreneurs. In short, they don’t necessarily NEED support- but understand they want support.

[spp-tweet "“When we are in flow, extraordinary stuff happens” ~Rich Litvin"]

Rich's community is called the 4 PC.  It is aimed towards a specific group of people: those playing a big game who don’t necessarily need coaching but simply want it. To put this idea into proper context, Rich mentions the book “The Rise of Superman” written by Steven Kotler which oversees the behavior of high performing people who undertake extreme sports like surfing the biggest waves and jumping out of planes. The concept of FLOW reveals that when we line up with it, extraordinary things happen!

[spp-tweet "“What’s the tiny shift you can make that can change everything?” ~Rich Litvin"]

According to Rich, what causes us to be out of line with FLOW is people’s tendency to aim too high or too far. Other people aren't willing to stretch themselves enough. The balance is that 4PC. It is the amount you need to lean into your edge- to have continual improvement and to not go too far beyond what is possible for you. As entrepreneurs, we must remember that we are already playing a big game. Our businesses and lives are constantly on the line. PC is that tiny shift that makes all the difference. Read more about 4PC here.

If we could stay in constant flow, the sky would be the limit. But what blocks our flow? Well, we all see the world through a lens and sometimes we don’t realize the lens we are looking through. The phrases we use, the thoughts we think and the beliefs we hold create our lens. How they see their world is how they create their world.

[spp-tweet "“How they see their world is how they create their world” ~Rich Litvin"]

Rich shares a story about one of his clients who was rejected for doing a movie because they passed it on to Steven Spielberg. This particular client came from a world where women and girls were mistreated and so she made her career about creating movies that highlighted this injustice. She felt the need to become successful because she felt this was something no one could take away from her. Then, Rich and the client uncovered something even deeper. The client said, “If I get too successful, I will get hurt because people might take things away from me.” So when this position got taken away from her- she actually felt a sense of relief. At the same time, not asking for what she really wanted (the role of creating the movie) was preventing her expansion. She was finally able to shed some light on this deep belief because of deep coaching and the powerful questions that came along with it. An effective coach helps people to understand the world they are creating.

[spp-tweet "“A growth mindset is knowing it’s all part of the game” ~Rich Litvin"]

These are the “Blurred Lines.” It’s the stuff you can’t see. As a great coach, your job is not to answer the questions your clients come to you with. It’s to help them lean into better and more powerful questions. For Rich, his purpose is to see who is in front of him and what are they doing this all for. What is the legacy and impact they want to create? What is the community they want to build? When this is solid and clear, you’ll figure out the other stuff (business aspects and technicalities).

A significant part of this process includes losing the fear of getting “no’s.” Rich says this is part of the growth process. The person with the most “no’s” will continue to grow exponentially than the person who gets less no’s. The person with less no’s is also the one who hasn’t put himself out there and sits in fear- paralyzed. Those who are unafraid of “no’s” as well as giving their all in their introductory sessions will have their success. Avoid “taster” sessions and give potential everything you’ve got. Hold back nothing! Keep in mind that you are selling an experience - not a concept.

[spp-tweet "“Failure is not the goal, but it is part of the process” ~Rich Litvin"]

    In this episode we’ll cover:
    • The power of deep coaching
    • What deep coaching actually is
    • Why you should hold back nothing in your service
    • How to sell the experience of coaching, not the concept
    • The importance of FLOW
    • Why you may not be in FLOW
    • How to get your FLOW back

[spp-tweet "“When I sell the experience not the concept, everything shifts” ~Rich Litvin"]

    Practical and Actionable:

    1. Start to look at the hard lines you put in your world. Notice when you start to use the words ALWAYS or NEVER. This is a clue as to where you have hard lines in your world. Life is rarely black and white. Be yourself- don't look at others whom you could emulate.
    2. Practice getting no’s. Make more proposals than you have ever made. Ask for more money than you have ever asked. Don’t try and get yes’s. Your job is to try to get no’s. Be willing to be surprised that in time, the higher the collection of no’s parallel to the high level of creation in your life.

Feeling tired and overwhelmed is all too common in the world of business ownership. What do you do when you are tired and you have more work to do? Do you press on? Do you grab a sugary drink? Well, what if you had a better understanding of mental fatigue? Our guest today is Dr. Carri Drzyzga who is a functional medicine expert. Discover some simple strategies to improve your energy levels and get more done in the process.

Share the LOVE and TWEET about this episode.

Dr. Carrie's Target Audience: Dr. Carrie treats business owners who suffer from fatigue. She helps business owners get more energy so they can get more business done.

[spp-tweet "“One thing business owners don’t appreciate their #1 asset: themselves” ~Dr. Carri Drzyzga"]

    What is meant by Fatigue?

According to Dr. Carrie, it’s mental- not physical. It’s the feeling of being tired or foggy where one has trouble concentrating. There is an inability to get things done and get into a creative zone. Rate your energy level from 1-10 (10 being the highest). If you do not rate an 8 or higher, you are suffering from fatigue. This impacts your business, creativity and your bottom line.

[spp-tweet "“Having a good sleep schedule is imperative to keeping your brain sharp and focused” ~Dr. Carri Drzyzga"]

So, what can we do about it?

Dr. Carrie believes in functional medicine and getting to the root underlying cause of where the fatigue is coming from. Once that is determined, focused is place on treating fatigue with natural treatments: i.e - diet, exercise and natural supplements to get the body healthy again. One thing business owners don’t appreciate is their #1 asset: THEMSELVES. People often self medicate on sugar and caffeine. Be sure that your diet is good and you are drinking enough water. Take time out time for stress management. Literally - schedule it in! Be sure to get into deep sleep every night. Having a good sleep schedule is imperative to keeping your brain sharp and focused.

[spp-tweet "“Just 5 deep belly breaths will automatically bring your stress down” ~Dr. Carri Drzyzga"]

    The Importance of Deep Breathing...

You won’t see the signs of not breathing effectively unless you focus it. Typically most people breathe from the top of their chest when they should be breathing from their belly. Place one hand over your heart and the other on your belly. Be sure your belly is moving and not your chest. Just 5 deep belly breaths will automatically bring your stress levels down. As simple as this is, we need reminders to get ourselves to do it. Dr. Carri recommends going on the internet and buying reminder bracelets. They vibrate once per hour to remind you to breathe.

[spp-tweet "“Gluten is just another stressor to the body” ~Dr. Carri Drzyzga"]

What’s the whole story with Gluten?

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It is a complete irritant to the body. Humans can't digest it properly which causes inflammation and irritation. It serves as just another stressor in the body. Gluten is also addictive and has a negative impact on the brain. Eliminating gluten from your diet will help you to feel clearer and more focused. To transition yourself off gluten, focus on one meal at a time. Once you master that, transition to the next meal of the day (lunch or whatever you choose).

In her new book Reclaim Your Energy and Feel Normal Again, she shares her own personal fatigue story as well as 4 others. One of the stories is about one woman who was suffering from food allergies, food sensitivities, chronic pain, fatigue, migraines, and insomnia. By following Dr. Carri’s recommendations around breathing, eating and getting good sleep, all those symptoms dissolved. Dr. Carri urges us to remember that food is your most powerful medicine. Switching over to these new habit is a process that takes time but can change your life. Don’t be too hard on yourself as you make changes. Try the 80/20 rule as a start. Even that will guarantee more energy and clearer thinking.

[spp-tweet "“To get off gluten focus on one meal at a time” ~Dr. Carri Drzyzga"]

Why did you have to write this book (Reclaim Your Energy and Feel Normal Again)?

With the guidance of her business coach, she was encouraged her to write it from the premise that if she didn’t, there would be many people out there who would suffer. So, she committed to getting it done.

    Practical and Actionable:

You know that phrase.. “I eat breath and sleep __________” Fill in the BLANK. What do you eat? Be mindful of what you eat at each meal. Are you breathing? Schedule in your breathing time into your electronic calendar to take 5 minutes 2-3 times a day to do your belly breaths or a simple meditation. Also make sure you’re getting deep sleep - wear an eye mask! This helps your body to make maximum amounts of melatonin.

  • 162 | Busyness is The Enemy To Your Business with Coach John Brubaker

We are all busy. We are all trying to fit in all that we can in a day. The more we do, the more productivity we feel. But what if "busyness is the enemy to your business?" I had the honor to interview Coach Bru or to some John Brubaker. Coach Bru shared his insights on focusing on what matters and about the importance of being a role model to others. A great concept to understand is "Everything you do is contagious" - meaning that what you do others will also do. I think it also applies to what you do presently and how that has a ripple effect for later.

Target Audience: John focuses on former athletes who thrive on accountability and coachability. He believes these are the two greatest abilities we can possess. His ideal clients want to take their business and personal development from where they are to that elusive next level. Thus, John helps people get out of their own way as it is most often an internal obstacle that is stopping them from doing so.

Coach Bru asks us to take a look at how we talk to ourselves. It is true that we can be our own worst enemies or critic. We may be in a pattern of believing things are impossible. So, John’s mission is helping people to clear their heads. All of what you need is already inside you - it’s just about channeling it.

How do you help people understand that they are in their own way?

John takes his clients through exercises to build awareness. He usually works with start up entrepreneurs or those who are transitioning (for example: management to CEO business owner). They often don’t see how their inner talk diminishes their value. It’s important to remember that thoughts become things which shape our story.

    On the topic of Productivity...

In John’s book - The Coach Approach, he highlights how little things make a big difference and how they effect our results. These are critical yet subtle moments. Take for example in a game: the first 5 minutes are really important because it sets the tone. Those initial moments must be set up for success and this sets the momentum. The last 5 minutes of the game are equally as important - it’s where the game is won or lost. Our day or our fiscal year is no different.

“Making the Shift” is the title of his most popular audio program. Most of us tend to think we have to do everything and we get so busy and we don’t slow down to speed up. The truth is that our internal engines need sufficient rest. More isn’t more - less is more! Getting a coach helped him to understand this and acquire that “work life balance.” This term has a foggy meaning now that we have home computers. Before the “at home computer” we had very clear work vs. home boundaries. But we must get back to that and reestablishing healthy boundaries for ourselves.

[spp-tweet "“Thoughts become things. They shape our story” ~John Brubaker"]

Who do you need to be to have the success you want?

John believes he needs to be a husband and father first. If he can do those 2 things successfully - everything else will flow. This is about modeling that for others. Our personal lives are everything. How you do anything is how you do everything and it’s all about how we show up. Keep in mind that everything we do is contagious!! Being that positive model of a good husband and father is where it starts!

    In this episode we’ll cover
    • Why you must be aware of your inner critic
    • Why you must be aware of your inner talk
    • How working with a coach can be a game changer
    • How you do anything is how you do everything
    • How to be more present
    • Being a positive role model

    Practical and Actionable

Focus on the next 5 minutes. This is simple yet powerful. Focus on being present. Check in with yourself and with key people you work with. It’s an investment that can make all the difference.
