  • 161 | Finding Your Audience with Jeff Goins

There are 2 traditional approaches in the marketing world. For many, they start by chasing the masses so they can see what works. Others look for a target audience. I think both of these are wrong. I think we should be looking to find our audience and find the profitable niche that is ideal for us. Listen to Jeff Goins, speaker, author and blogger. He is the author of The Art of Work and The In-Between: Embracing the Tension Between Now and the Next Big Thing. Jeff shares why it is so important to finding your audience.

Target Audience: Jeff is a writer who helps other writers find their audiences. He also teaches online courses for writers so they may find their audiences for efficiently.

[spp-tweet "“Activity follows identity!” ~Jeff Goins"]

Jeff started out as a blogger. teaches online courses for writers find their audiences. Jeff says it is all about targeting people who think the way you think and believe in what you believe in.

[spp-tweet "“One of the best ways for you to let the world know what you are about is to write a manifesto” ~Jeff Goins"]

Having a MANIFESTO is a perfect way to do this. You often see infographics that reflect demographics- but then there are psychographics. This connects to the way that people think! One of the best ways for you to let the world know what you are about is to write a manifesto. It reflects what you stand for and other people identify with it. It’s like drawing a line in the sand.

Why is finding your audience such an important thing if you’re a business owner?
What Jeff has realized is that everything comes down to marketing. This way of thinking transformed his business. Instead of thinking of it as a singular task, it became about connecting with the group of people who made the business - essentially- the audience. Without an audience a business is just a storefront. What makes it a business are the people willing to pay you. The way you bridge the gap is taking the time to market. You must earn trust and begin a relationship with them. Really great marketing at it’s core is about connecting with what people want and making sure they dont miss it. Seth Godin sees it as helping a worthy idea spread!

[spp-tweet "“Without an audience a business is just a storefront” ~Jeff Goins"]

    Jeff’s STRUGGLES with marketing...

Jeff admits this is something he’s always struggled with. He started out as a writer/blogger for a nonprofit (“International development and relief”) where he had his first exposure with marketing. Initially he felt he couldn’t spread the message until he witnessed its impact. Receiving volunteers and donations for a worthy cause was worthwhile! This context gave Jeff meaning for what marketing can do. It was about connecting stories with people who need them and producing measurable action. When it’s towards the wrong people, that’s when it feels like manipulation.

What about those who don’t think they’re writers or are afraid to tell the whole story?
According to Jeff, if you write, you’re a writer! Think about it: we all write each day - so stop kidding yourself. Additionally, there are plenty of other forms of media to get your story out there like video for example.

And if you feel afraid, Jeff encourages you to tell that story because there’s risk to be addressed there. When Jeff tells the story he is most afraid to tell, those are the ones people need to hear the most. It sets people free from self doubt. The safe stories are the ones people don’t need to hear as much. Failure is the best way to connect with people because we have all experienced it

[spp-tweet "“Really great marketing is connecting with what people want” ~Jeff Goins"]

New Book: The Art of Work

This is a book about answering your calling. It answers the question around: how do you figure out what your life is about and build a bridge towards a life you’re meant to have? People feel they’re missing out in life. Jeff interviewed numerous people about steps and parts of a meaningful life.

Consider that you can’t keep going to a job you hate and not expect it to affect you in a negative way. Inevitably, you become what you practice. You may think you’re not a writer, but all you really need to do is just WRITE! Activity follows identity! You’ve got to give up who you think you are or who others think you are to finally do what you are meant to do

[spp-tweet "“The story I am most afraid to tell is the one people need to hear the most” ~Jeff Goins"]

    In this episode we’ll cover:
    •  Why you are already a writer
    • Why you become what you practice
    • Why marketing is NOT slimy
    • How to connect with those who need your story
    • The importance of sharing your failures
    • How marketing is about building relationships

[spp-tweet "“Failure is the best way to connect with people because we have all experienced it” ~Jeff Goins"]

Have you thought about writing a book to position you in the marketplace? Would you trust a book marketer that doesn’t have a book? Yeah, me neither. But today’s guest is Tim Grahl, an expert in author and book marketing. He is also the author of “Your First 1000 copies”. Listen to Tim in part 2 of our interview where he explains about how he used his book to propel his business forward. Don’t forget the overall picture of this interview which is about niching.

Target Audience: Tim helps authors build their platform, connect with readers and sell more books.

[spp-tweet "“I constantly throw things on the wall to see what will work” ~Tim Grahl"]

Tim’s business officially took off when he wrote his book: Your First 1,000 Copies. He was motivated to write the book because he felt he was saying the same things over and over again to many different people. The book was written for authors take advantage of its content and use it over and over. People don’t know what to do when it comes to marketing and the book dissolves a lot of questions around it.

[spp-tweet "“I think of the books I publish as little sparks” ~Tim Grahl"]

Tim also figured out a way to drive business back to him. In several different places in the book, Tim recommends people to return to the website and and grab more (free) resources to help the reader. Technology changes and improves so it was futile to put those things in the books since they would inevitable change. So, the book has become the entry point to the rest of his platform

Tim sold over 10,000 copies of the book in the first year. Did you know that most books only sell 250 copies the first year they come out? This is all due to the marketing strategy you have. You must test your strategy all the time in order to see what works and what doesn’t.

[spp-tweet "“A book can go places you can never go to on your own” ~Tim Grahl"]

When you are trying out your strategy it’s best to get advice, says Tim. However the problem with advice is that most people who make it up haven’t actually tried it. It often comes from one author's perspective and interpreted by another author.

Tim decided to work with a coach: Josh Kauffman who says, “when in doubt create assets.” Meaning, when in doubt, create more content. Josh also helped him to see the mistake many people often is that they don’t write for their potential clients or customers but simply write for themselves. This won’t often sell. Start by identifying who you are trying to attract. Make sure that when you are writing, (or producing any form of content) you are writing it from the perspective of, “how can I help the person that I eventually want to give me money?”

[spp-tweet "“Think about: how can I help the person who I eventually want to give me money?" ~Tim Grahl"]

Building a platform before publishing a book is good way to get the word out there. Some people do it the other way around where they publish first and build their platform using the book. Tim likes to think of the books he publishes as little sparks. Remember that a book can go places you can never go to on your own

    In this episode we’ll cover:
    • How Tim used a book to drive business back to him
    • Why you need a coach in your corner
    • How to find someone to help you solve your struggle
    • What focus you must choose for your book if you want to sell
    • Why books go further than you ever could
    • Why systematizing is everything

[spp-tweet "“Computers do amazing things to automate” ~Tim Grahl"]

    Practical and Actionable:

    1. Find someone to ask advice about a current problem you are having.
    2. Look for things you are doing over and over and find a way to systematize them to save time. Computers do amazing things to automate.

But today's guest is Tim Grahl, an expert in author and book marketing. He is also the author of "Your First 1000 copies". [spp-tweet ""I asked myself if i could find a common denominator in the things I enjoyed" ~Tim Grahl"]

As an entrepreneur you kind of flounder around looking for something that works. Before the glory days he is currently living, Tim was a freelancer working in a cubicle where he was programming code. He helped people build things like Wordpress in the days when no one knew how to build Wordpress. But, he couldn't ever get ahead moneywise. He decided to hire a coach: Josh Kauffman. Josh guided Tim in identifying what kind of work did he really want to do in order to create a focus and a system that would produce result over and over again. This also finally allowed Tim to get really good at something rather than mediocre at everything. During this process, Tim discovered he really liked working with authors.

[spp-tweet ""I didn't just look at money, I looked at lifestyle too" ~Tim Grahl"]

As a beginner, it is perfectly fine to do many different things in order to figure out what you're really good at. Once identified however, you want to hone in on a more narrowed array of skills and become the expert. Tim asked himself what the common denominator was in the things he enjoyed and focused. He not only considered the money aspect but more importantly what it meant for his lifestyle too. Although authors (his niche) can't pay the most he knew he enjoyed the work and the lifestyle it provided him.

So why did Tim need to hire a coach? Tim knew he was making mistakes because he knew it wasn't supposed to be so hard. There were so many details and he couldn't see all the blindspots. His coach helped him to see what was causing him so much trouble. Nothing trumps getting one person who knows what they're talking about to give you advice. Asking for this kind of help is a strength and the fastest way to get over obstacles.

[spp-tweet ""If I have to pick between time and freedom, I always choose freedom" ~Tim Grahl"]

Tim worked for Remit Seti who put out this pdf (along with Charlie Hoen) which turned into a book: The Recession Proof Graduate. It lays out a simple way of getting clients and experience in an industry you may not have any. It shows entrepreneurs how to build up a client base from nothing without putting in too much work while reflecting your expertise. Tim decided to focus on finding the big name authors and do the work for free. This helped him to collect valuable testimonials. He then Worked for Dan Pink and just asked that he intended to keep working with him. 6 years later- they still work together. Whether you continue to work with any client, it's still experience and an opportunity gather testimonials either way.

Develop SYSTEMS & stop trading time for money...

A System allows you to do certain tasks over and over which yield the same results. You can either create checklist or you get a computer to do it for you. This simplifies things and frees you from hiring people.

Tim eventually created an online course to teach people these things. He now sells his consulting business over and over again in such a way that helps more people and frees up his time.

Target Audience: John helps people get really clear about being a CEO and what it takes to be a CEO.

[spp-tweet "“Entrepreneurship can be a lonely experience” ~John Robinson"]

John left his cushy corporate America job behind and everyone thought he was crazy. John admits that he sees most people don’t understand it and he doesn’t expect them to. Stepping into your alignment takes a letting go of what you have now to get to something bigger. John believes in surrendering. That’s why he gave away 95% of his possessions 3 years ago. He surrendered all the ‘stuff’ to open up for something new which was Back Up CEO.

[spp-tweet "“My esteem was built on the courage I would take to learn” ~John Robinson"]

So what has embracing ‘crazy’ done for John? It made him think deeply about what sacrifice really meant. For John, sacrifice is about going against what you have been taught to believe. John was taught to believe that his self esteem and identity was based on all that ‘stuff.’ Embracing his crazy showed him that his esteem was not built on all of the ‘stuff.’ He found that his esteem was built on the courage he would take to learn (not fail) but to learn and to keep learning. It gave him a process and a way of thinking that he could utilize when at his lowest. He’s now fully aware of what he is truly made of (which is something he couldn’t gain in the corporate world where things were simply handed to him).

[spp-tweet "“I’ve spent thousands of dollars per month to learn this craft of leadership” ~John Robinson"]

This is what he helps others in- including John Loomer Here are the 3 steps…
    1. Thinking clearly. Thoughts have the potential to distracted. Thinking clearly is about painting your picture. You can smell, see, taste and feel it! Create the narrative of how you want it to look. To help people further, John is in the process of putting together “Crazy CEO’s and the Businesses that Made Them that Way.” It is based on the idea about owning the fact that you aren't crazy and gives a way to attach to core leadership fundamentals. It’s about crazy honesty and intense effort.
    2. Speaking decisively: once you can think clearly and use words that have meaning to you, yet connect and influence others. Knowing how to use powerful words is something you must master.
    3. Acting boldly. This is about speaking and living what the verbs are. It is about getting into the depth of what a word means. Then the plans and strategy FLOW.

John speaks about what it means to be “Bizarrely Focused” Basically, sketch out something you really want to do and laminate it so that you may look at it all the time and ultimately you begin to live it!

[spp-tweet "“Leadership is a craft not a skill” ~John Robinson"]

John asks us to think about our Core Values. Go back to the inner critic and know what's real and what's not. Take a look at judgment and question your own inner beliefs, assumptions and fears. The buggy man is really not under the bed but inside of you.

John has taken bold steps and continues to learn from mistakes. He’s an avid learner. He’s invested thousands per month on strategic coaches, entrepreneur organizations, Vistage, etc. This is all to help him be a better leader. Leadership is a craft not a skill! It’s about constantly learning and knowing you aren’t doing your best and that you can always do better. John i doesn’t buy into not thinking you can do better.

[spp-tweet "“When we get into our creation mindset, everything is possible” ~John Robinson"]

Why do people stop or think they are done?

One word sums up the answer and that is: SCARCITY. It stems from thinking there isn’t enough time, talent, people, money, guts. In contrast the feeling and belief in ABUNDANCE gives us the will to create. When we get into our creation mindset everything is possible. Mediocrity is so easy to embrace when you don't want to feel uncomfortable.

    In this episode we’ll cover
    • What John had to let go of to get to something bigger
    • Why you must question your inner critic
    • Embracing the ‘CRAZY’ that comes with entrepreneurship
    • The mindset of ABUNDANCE over SCARCITY
    • 3 ways to fully embrace your own inner ‘CRAZY’
    • How to get laser focused on your dreams so you may start living it

Target Audience: Serves advanced Facebook marketers who want to utilize Facebook for advertising.

Jon calls himself an “accidental marketer.” He didn’t start out with the success you see around him now because he began attracting a lot of “freeloaders” - those who didn’t want to spend a lot of money on Facebook advertising, let alone on his services. So he needed to focus on a new audience: Advanced facebook marketers. He finds these people are naturally more advanced and also valued his services. He now appeals to the audience he wants to appeal to.

Jon wasn’t always so confident and he didn't quite see himself as the one to appeal to advanced Facebook marketers. However, he came to a point in his life where he didn’t want to move anymore or commute. He desired to completely dedicate himself to his family. John Robinson became his mentor whom he began to have weekly calls with. Together, they worked on a lot of mindset issues like procrastination and self-doubt. The most profound question John Robinson asked Jon was whether taking specific actions energized him.

Jon realized he had to emotionally address things that were blocking him from growing his business. Though Jon has worked through many mindset blocks, it doesn’t mean he still doesn’t feel the fear. For example, although he has a fear of speaking, he fights through it. See Gene’s Speaker Series for more on how to deal with your own fear of taking the stage.

    [spp-tweet "“Content is extremely important”"]

What energized Jon was his main motivation of not wanting to work for the man anymore and working for himself. Likewise, he wanted the flexibility to do things he loves like coach his kids and watch them grow up. Even though Jon has lots of opportunities coming at him, he filters out what’s not important (along with the guidance of his mentor - John Robinson).

Let’s dive into the hot topic of FACEBOOK:

The biggest problems Jon sees is that many people approach Facebook advertising the way they approach things like google adwords. Many don’t have a website but instead a landing page from leadpages and use facebook to target and sell. They are then surprised with disappointment when it doesn’t work out. Jon confirms that this is because doing that way is like taking a short cut without having an actual audience. Those people one advertises to don’t know or trust the advertiser. It takes a lot of work. Content is extremely important. Building trust is very important too.

You can go straight for the opt in but people value their email address. They want to know that they can trust you and will receive value from you. It’s about long term success. Driving traffic is how you build relationships organically. Jon did an experiment where he offered a total of 12 tips. He served them what he promised by not asking for email add - YET. He built their trust slowly and this filtered out people who weren’t truly interested in his service. At the end of serving out all the content, he offered a webinar and at that point, many people felt trust and thus provided their email address. He then made an offer to “his people.” Again, Jon didn’t do anything to sell or get an optin until the end. Keep in mind that many of these people would have never gotten involved if he had asked for their email in the beginning.

[spp-tweet "“I wasn’t doing anything to sell or get an opt-in until the end”"]

Remember, Jon did this through ads - not automated emails. So it was highly specific in who it retargeted. Interest in the first ad lead to the second ad and so on. Emails were provided based on the trust the audience had in Jon.

    In this episode we’ll cover
    • Why Know Like and Trust gets you ideal clients
    • Why you don’t want to go straight for the optin
    • How to build online relationships organically
    • Why it’s important to give your audience real value
    • Why Content is so important
    • Why it’s better to go the long route to build your audience
    • The power of retargeting

[spp-tweet "“You need to target people most likely to engage”"]

    Practical and Actionable

You need to target people most likely to engage- those who know you already. If you have an email list, upload it as an audience. It’s all about traffic to your website. If you can re-market to people then that is fresh. Go to your Facebook ads manager - click on audiences - then create your custom audience for your website and install your pixel. Add that to your website.
