This month, Dan talks with Liz and Kayleigh from Great Rivers United Way about the Compass NOW 2024 survey. This survey is a collaboration between Great Rivers United Way, county health departments, and many health and human service entities such as Gundersen St. Joseph's. The survey aims to discover community issues and concerns across many areas of the community such as economic concerns, childcare, housing, public safety, healthcare, and the environment.
The great thing about this survey is that it's hyper-focused on the Wisconsin counties of Vernon, Monroe, La Crosse, Trempealeau, and Buffalo as well as Houston, MN. What's more, the results from this survey are shared with health and human service agencies within the Great Rivers United Way region to help improve our communities.
So if you have a hot-button issue or have noticed things in the community that need addressing, this is your chance to get your concerns on the radar... and that's what makes this survey the most important survey you'll ever take.

On this month's edition of the GSTJ community health podcast we talk with Shawn Monson who is the program coordinator at Farm Well Wisconsin, an organization dedicated to supporting the mental and physical health of farmers and farm workers in the state of Wisconsin. Farmers are known to be hardworking, conscientious, and gritty people. Often, however, they put their own health and well-being on the back burner. Farm Well Wisconsin believes cultivating habits that support the health and well-being of all aspects of the farming operation, including physical health, behavioral health, and financial health, is the key to success.

On this episode of our community health podcast, we talk with the amazing Dr. Alex Wade about how to prevent colon cancer. Dr. Wade is one of three general surgeons at Gundersen St. Joseph's providing a range of surgical services, the most common of which is colonoscopy. Dr. Wade talks through the process, the prep, and why 45 is the new 50.
"Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States, but it doesn’t have to be. Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. Screening can find precancerous polyps—abnormal growths in the colon or rectum—that can be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening also helps find colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment works best. About nine out of every 10 people whose colorectal cancers are found early and treated appropriately are still alive five years later.
If you are 45 years old or older, get screened now. If you think you may be at increased risk for colorectal cancer, speak with your doctor about when to begin screening, which test is right for you, and how often to get tested." Source: CDC.gov
