  • Episode 8 - Guerrillapreneur Mastermind Interview - Cargo42: "Sharing Economy Meets Trucking" Featuring Francine Gervazio, Co-Fndr & COO
In Episode 8 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur news, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies.

First, we discuss Intel's 30-page report entitled, "Accelerating the Future: The Economic Impact of the Emerging Passenger Economy." Intel and its partner Strategy Analytics project that the Passenger Economy will grow to $7 trillion by 2050 driven mainly by Consumer Mobility-as-a-Service (estimated to grow to $3.7 trillion), Business B2B Mobility-as-a-service (estimated to grow to $3 trillion) and New & Emerging Pilotless Vehicle Service (estimated to grow to $300 billion). The report argues that as pilotless transportation takes hold, consumers and businesses will relinquish car ownership in favor of paying for transportation by the transaction. Read the report at https://newsroom.intel.com/newsroom/wp-content/uploads/sites/11/2017/passenger-economy.pdf

Second, Airbnb is back and they are reporting web traffic higher than all other travel search sites including Booking.com, Hotels.com and traditional hotel brands like Hilton and Marriott International. Airbnb drew 106.9 million visits to its site in Q1 2017 that's up 31% of the same time in 2016. Airbnb accredits the surge in millennials seeking non-traditional travel adventures to the growth.

Third, Simon Fraser University student tackle the "Parking Space" problem by launching an app called OpenSpot. The app lets parking space owners rent the spot when they are not using it allowing app users to find parking spots in congested downtown areas.

Fourth, China continues to inflate a "Sharing Economy Bubble" by investing in a growing number of highly suspect business models. Basketball sharing (yes Basketball sharing) Zhulegequi raised $1.3 million in funding to support the roll-out of their custom kiosks at basketball courts around China where users can scan a code using their smartphone to rent a basketball. Not to be outdone, Shen WeiWei launched an umbrella sharing service called Molisan where users can share an umbrella. Molisan has kiosks that dispense umbrellas and charge user about $0.15 for a 12 hour period. Zhuelegui and Molisan are suffering from the same problem. Users are not returning the items to the kiosks.

Finally, Electric car charging station sharing startup "Share&Charge" has launched a new mobile app that will make it easier for private and public electric car charging station owners to participate in the peer-to-peer network. Owners can list their charging station on the app and can independently determine the charging method and the price of their electricity service. Vehicle owners users can the app to search for the next charging station on an interactive map.

In Episode 7, I interviewed sales guru, Scott Sullivan of Sullivan & Associates (also known as Synergenic Sales Group), who reflected on the Growth Capacity Framework and discussed how startups can OUTSOURCE Sales and Marketing and unleash explosive growth. In Episode 8, I interview Francine Gervazio, the cofounder and COO of Cargo42. Cargo42 is being called the Airbnb of Trucking because it has found a way to market the empty space in trucks to local shippers who are seeking economical delivery services.

  • Episode 7 - Guerrillapreneur Mastermind Interview - Why Startups Should Outsource Sales: Featuring Scott Sullivan, Fndr of Synergenic Sales
In Episode 7 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur news, news about the sharing, gig and circular loop economies. First, According to Forbes Magazine, sharing economy companies are improving the economic fortunes of women around the world. Female Airbnb hosts in Kenya are earning enough to cover one-third of their household costs. Female hosts in India are earning enough to cover over 30% of their household costs. Despite the change in fortunes, women still lag men in launching sharing economy startups. Debbie Wosskow, founder and CEO of Love Home Swap, has launched a Allbright, a unique UK funding platform designed to provide the support and finance needed by female-led businesses to launch and scale. Second, Safr Ride Sharing Service has changed their market approach. Initially, Safr launched as a woman-only ride sharing service -- with women drivers serving only women riders. Safr has modified its approach to all men to both ride and drive for the company. However, Safr does give users the option in its App to select whether they prefer women drivers and/or riders. Third, Snagajob and Husl have both completed market test and are preparing to roll-out their on-demand service for hourly workers that is focused on the restaurant sector. Fourth, Cat-in-a-Flat, the Airbnb of the Cat Sitting space, has begun a full scale roll-out after their soft launch in London, Dublin and Amsterdamn. You will soon be able to use their app to locate a trust cat sitter for your fluffy friend. Fifth, three Chinese Shared-Battery Sharing and/or Smart Device Charging companies announced investments on the same day. According to Six Tone magazine, Xiaodian received a $350 million-Yuan ($50.7 million US) in investments while Hidian and Feichangdian received $100 million Yuan ($14.5 million US) and $3 million Yuan ($435,000 US) respectively. Finally, Up & Go, and Home Cleaning Startup started by cleaning cooperatives Brightly Cleaning, Cooperative Cleaning of New York, and Ecomundo, is fighting the tech giants entering their space. Unlike taxi cab companies, these cooperatives have decided to fight back and use technology to give them the sharing economy benefits and reach more customers.

In Episode 6, I presented the Growth Capacity Framework to help business mavericks and entrepreneurs create management capacity. The framework uses two dimensions (Do the tasks differentiate your business and Are the tasks Critical to the Daily Delivery of the Product or Service) to help founders to sort business tasks into four quadrants: CORE COMPETENCY Tasks, Tasks that represent NEW COMPETENCIES, Tasks that should be OUTSOURCED and tasks that founders should seek to REDUCE THE COST.

In Episode 7, we use our Mastermind Interview with sales guru, Scott Sullivan of Sullivan & Associates (also known as Synergenic Sales Group), to reflect on the Growth Capacity Framework and to show founders how they can OUTSOURCE Sales and Marketing and unleash explosive growth.

In Episode 3 of the Art of Waging Small Business Warfare podcast, we bring you up to speed with Guerrillapreneur news, news at the sharing and circular loop economies:

•Smart is launching a car sharing (similar to Mercedes' Croove) service called "smart ready to share." Car owners can use the smartphone app to post the time when their cars are available and invite friends to use it. Users can un-lock shared Smart cars using the smartphone app.
    •Chinese bike-sharing start-up Mobike closed a $215M series D funding round.
•Massachusetts-based bike sharing startup, Zagster, announced a $10M Series B financing round lead by Edison Partners.
•Airbnb announced that Kenya doubled the number of homes available for sharing in 2016 reaching a total of 4,000 homes. Airbnb also noted that the number of guest staying in Kenyan homes tripled over the same time period.
•Kenya has become a hotbed for sharing economy startups. Little Cabs, a ride sharing service similar to Uber and founded by telecommunications company Safaricom launched in July, 2016. Little Cabs already has 2,500 drivers and 90,000 active accounts. Lynk, a startup similar to Angie's List, launched a sharing platform that connects customers in Kenya with service providers.

Also in this episode, I launch the VERY first Guerrillapreneur Mastermind Interview with the President and CEO of the Selma Good Company, Robert Armstrong. The Selma Good Company owns the line of G Mommas Cookies. The Selma Good Company is based in historic Selma, Alabama. Armstrong started this company with a $7,500 loan (using his truck as collateral) and a cookie recipe. Armstrong used shared economy tactics including sharing a local restaurant's kitchen (baking his cookies during their off hours) to launch his startup. Armstrong stated,"I knew the value of the product was in the product not in the equipment that I was using to make the product." Armstrong grew his cookie startup from 3 local stores to more 1,000 national chain stores around the country. The G Mommas's cookie line includes a Chocolate Chip with Pecans and a "Buddascotch" oatmeal both in 5.5oz retail packs. Since the launch of G Mommas cookies,

Armstrong has used sharing economy tactics to increase the asset utilization of the equipment he purchased to pack and ship his cookies. The Selma Good Company now provides services to smaller manufacturers including 3rd Party Auditing, Packaging Sourcing, Warehousing and Distribution. Selma Good can pack candy, snack food, grocery and specialty food, coffee, mixes and powders and nutritionals. Armstrong use of sharing economic tactics has helped him preserve cash and extend the runway for the successful launch of his business. The interview with Armstrong is a mini-MBA for startups. Listed below are the business topic areas that are covered in the interview:

•Leveraging the shared economy to avoid capital expenditures until you prove your concept
•Focusing on your core competencies and outsourcing other non-strategic services
•Identifying the right strategic outsourcing partner
•Conducting market research on a show string budget
•Getting your product on retail stores
