Then, guest Adam joins the pod to candidly share his experience coping with the death of his brother, Lance (yes, THAT Lance from The Bon Ton), at the age of 19. Grief almost NEVER looks how we expect it to, and Adam beautifully highlights the intense feelings of numbness that can confuse us (and even cause us to “fake it”) when we’re navigating the murky waters of bereavement. Negative coping skills are an easy distraction, but the real healing comes from turning inward and facing your grief – and Adam is a prime example of finding that out for yourself.

Well, this month we lost not only a game show host, a director, and movie star alligator, but also Pope Francis. . .and we chat about the ritual and nostalgia wrapped up in all of these losses. Then, future chemist and guest Hunter joins The Pod crew to tell a few hilarious stories about his dad Bert, who died from lung cancer over eight years ago, when Hunter was only 10. Hunter’s resilience, maturity, and positive outlook is a great reminder that loss in childhood does not mean someone is broken – rather, it can be where their greatest strengths come from. Who Died this week? Well, host Julia learns about both the life and death of one Mr. Wink Martindale (what a name!) and we pay homage to the late Val Kilmer. Then, our hosts welcome guest Kate Harmon and her “Bob shirt” to the pod. Kate’s dad Bob (of the aforementioned shirt) was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease over 15 years ago, which kickstarted their family into teaming up with the Michael J. Fox foundation and helping to find a cure. From flying up and down the east coast, to taking charge and making semi-threatening phone calls, Kate has been “on” since her dad’s diagnosis, riding the adrenaline of anticipatory grief. By being given the “gift of goodbye,” Kate found ways to cope throughout her dad’s illness – skills that are still serving her since his death six months ago. But let’s not forget that a big part of healing is finding time to slow down, turn inward, and face your pain. Go Team Fox!
