Ebner is on the brink of losing his job at A.M.I and in this episode, he makes damn sure he gets fired.
Before that though, there's a visit from slimy David Pecker, the head dude at National Enquirer.
Finally, on his way out the door with a stolen A.M.I laptop and a $5000 severance check, a co-worker gives Ebner the contents of Paris Hilton's hacked Sidekick and that leads to his next book, "6 degrees of Paris Hilton" which we will be discussing on the next season of Gumshoe Diaries.

Ebner's learning the ropes at the National Enquirer and it isn't going well, he just can't find the sweet spot in the Tabloid Universe. He is moved to The Globe where he finally gets a shot at his Truman Capote moment with a 'Fetus Snatcher' story but even that is cheapened by the tabloid take on the crime.
He moves onto a story about the Minutemen that gets him beaten up and in a matter of months, Ebner has 2 strikes against him at A.M.I and is seeing that the tabloid universe is not a place for him.
And all the while, that gambling addiction is still playing in the background of Ebner's head.

Ebner's tale of how he ended up at the tabloids is a wild ride; from a heroin addiction to the world of 12 steps, to the celebrity packed Sunset Strip restaurant Le Dome, to his first big break as a writer, to a burgeoning community of like minded malcontents that leads to a to a NY Times best selling book w/ Andrew Breitbart....then throw in a gambling addiction and a descent into homelessness for good measure and just when all seems lost, a job offer comes along, with A.M.I, American Media Incorporated aka National Enquirer/Globe/Star.
And so begins Mark's Year of Murder by Character Assassination.
