  • The Bug S2#8: Coping with a new world
Can I cope in the wild? It’s been 8 weeks in quarantine (or is it 9?) and so here’s this week’s podcast, with music from my friends Ben and Stéphane, and a thought-piece/sound-art-performance by Ned McGowan. Plus suggestions and commentary from Phlyssa and Anders – and David Attenborough too. Thanks to you all!

  • The Bug S2#7 A rant

No, I’m not falling apart: this rant is only possible because I finally feel like I have a handle on my personal situation. I’m stabilized. But now that I’m stable, I’m looking around me, and saddened by how much my friends, family, and colleagues are suffering. Here’s my rant!

  • The Bug S2#2: When the music stops
    CO-HOSTED WITH NED McGOWAN!

Tonight at 6pm…Ned and I are co-hosting The Bug. We taped our conversation last night, and had a really good time, though there are minor technical issues which I’m sure you (our audience) will forgive, under the circumstances. We talked about rivers and starting trumpet lessons, about disasters and artistic inspiration in dark times. We spoke of silence and noise!
Enjoy, and don’t forget to think about contributing to the podcast via the paypal link below.
    Playlist
River Man – Brad Mehldau Trio
Dual Track Grinder – by Ned McGowan – performed by Hexnut
City Shimmy – by Jaromír Weinberger, performed by Gottlieb Wallisch

  • The Bug S2#1: when time stops
The Bug is back – this is Season Two, episode #1. I wasn’t planning to start so soon, but my concert tour has been cancelled – with no more performances in the foreseeable future; indeed who knows when we can all travel again?
My creative life as a performer is entirely about the group experience, the opposite of social distancing. My musician colleagues are at home, not on-stage. And the audience is at home too. What does this mean for culture, for community, for art, for cohesion?
Join me tonight at 6pm GMT+1 (or anytime thereafter via streaming) as I present a podcast in the time of coronavirus.
The original bug referred to the spooky ex-embassy where I have my recording studio. I never planned for this double meaning. But it seems appropriate enough.

  • The Bug #12: Muses
In this episode, the last of season one, Guy Livingston muses on muses, music, and museums. Hark back to the ancient Greeks, Renaissance memes, and to some amazing muses who changed art history: Alma Mahler, Katinka Pasveer, Kiki de Montparnasse, and Clara Schumann. Why is a muse a muse? Is it about eroticism, beauty, sexuality, or couple dynamics? Are some women just smarter than the men they champion? Are muses out-dated now in an era of improved (though still imperfect) gender equality? And I didn’t even get to talk about Frederick Chopin and Georges Sand, who were each other’s muses, and defied gender conventions of their era…
Listen and enjoy! (and see you in the autumn)
    Muses Playlist:

    * Gustav Mahler: Symphony number 2 –  Resurrection (Andante) conducted by Roger Norrington, SWR Radio Orchestra.
    * Karlheinz Stockhausen: Katinka’s Gesang, performed by Katinka Pasveer, from the opera Licht
    * Robert Schumann: Piano Quartet opus 47 (1st movement)
    * Tom Lehrer: “Alma” for voice and piano, sung by Mr. Lehrer himself.

“You write to become immortal, or because the piano happens to be open, or you’ve looked into a pair of beautiful eyes.” – Robert Schumann

  • The Bug #11: Stockhausen’s new clothes
Postcast #11: featuring special guest Ned McGowan, in conversation with Guy Livingston
“Aus Licht” consists of extracts from the excruciatingly long and bombastic opera “Licht” by Karlheinz Stockhausen – fortunately livened by occasional flashes of genius…the opera is in many modules, divided into 7 days of the week, each of which have their own color, their own aroma, their own symbol. The lighting and production values are fantastic, really mind-blowing. But the gestures, costumes, and video leave a lot to be desired. And the music ranges from weak to dated. Rarely, but at least once day, there are amazingly beautiful sections, some sung, and some for flute.
This podcast discusses the helicopter quartet of Stockhausen (the audio here is from a prior production); Apocalypse Now‘s helicopter-infused soundtrack of Wagner; and Ballet mécanique by George Antheil. Enjoy!
