  • Ep 009 - What is Hard Water?

On today's show, Tom talks about hard water:

    • What hard water is

    • What causes hard water

    • What hard water can do to your health and things in your home

    TRANSCRIPT:

Hard water is very common. On this podcast episode, we'll delve into what hard water is, its causes, and the potential impact it can have on our homes and health.

Defining Hard Water Hard water is water that contains high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. These minerals accumulate in water sources as it passes through deposits of limestone, chalk, or gypsum. The higher the concentration of these minerals, the harder the water becomes. Did you know that for the most part, water, falling as rain, is pure? But not for very long. Water then falls through the smoke and pollutants in the sky. By the time it reaches the ground it's already contaminated. Once water reaches the ground it comes into contact with streams, rivers, runoff from the streets and fields where there could be pollutants such as oil and pesticides mixing into our water that eventually ends up in our homes.

Causes and Effects The presence of calcium and magnesium minerals in water leads to various things. When hard water is in your home, it can result in the formation of mineral deposits, known as scale — in pipes, appliances, and fixtures. Scale buildup can reduce water flow, decrease appliance efficiency, and increase energy consumption. Hard water interferes with the lathering of soaps and detergents — making it more difficult to wash and get things clean (including our bodies). And it leaves behind soap scum on surfaces. Hard water also reduces the efficiency of appliances and reduces their lifespan.

Implications for HealthWhile hard water is generally safe to consume, it may have certain implications for health. Some studies suggest a potential correlation between high calcium and magnesium intake through hard water and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. However, excessive mineral intake could be problematic for individuals who already have kidney-related health issues. Additionally, the minerals present in hard water can leave a residue, resulting in irritated and dry skin. Using water softeners or installing filtration systems can mitigate these health concerns.

Hard water is a common water quality issue that can impact various aspects of our lives, from household maintenance to personal health. Understanding the causes and effects of hard water enables us to take necessary precautions to explore treatment options.

Personally, I have been spoiled with soft water my whole life. When I go to a hotel I dread hopping in the shower knowing that my experience just won't be the same as at home. For those of you with soft water, I'm sure you can relate to this. See you next time!

  • Ep 008 - Protect Your Equipment with Pumptec

A couple weeks ago, when talking about well booster pumps, we said you should consider installing a Pumptec device as a safeguard for your well pump, ensuring protection against potential damage in instances of low water levels.

On this episode, we'll explain in detail what a Pumptec is and how it protects pumps from damage, detects issues, and ensures reliable operation in various industries.

    TRANSCRIPT:

A couple weeks ago, in a previous podcast episode about well booster pumps, I briefly mentioned Pumptec. If you have a low water level, or low water table, you really should consider installing a Pumptec. A Pumptec is sometimes referred to as a pump saver, because that's exactly what it does! The unit gets installed near your well tank and if your well dries up, the Pumptec will automatically shut off your well pump prior to it becoming damaged — or even worse — failing. You definitely don't want it to get to the point of complete failure. The Pumptec helps protect your well pump from damage due to running out of water. That's the abbreviated version of what it is and what it does.

To go into further detail: Pumptec is used in pump control systems, designed to protect pumps and motors from potential damage caused by various operating conditions. In numerous industries, it's an essential component in where pumps are used — including agriculture, irrigation, water treatment, and industrial processes.

The primary function of Pumptec is to monitor and regulate the performance of pumps, ensuring their efficient and reliable operation. It constantly monitors key parameters and diagnoses motor load to prevent pump or motor failure due to adverse conditions such as low-flow wells, pump damage, clogging, bound pumps, or power mishaps. It also protects during dry well or underload conditions, over and under voltage, rapid cycling, air or gas locked pumps, broken shafts or couplings, clogged screen, faulty check valve, worn pump parts, and even waterlogged well or storage tanks. That was definitely a mouthful! To sum it up: by analyzing all of this, Pumptec can detect abnormal conditions or potential issues that could harm the pump or the motor.

One of the critical features of Pumptec is its ability to provide pump protection against dry running, also known as run-dry protection. Dry running is when the pump operates without sufficient fluid, which causes overheating, damage to the pump components, and even complete pump failure. Pumptec uses sensors to detect the absence of fluid flow and automatically shuts down the pump, preventing any damage.

Furthermore, Pumptec offers protection against issues like low voltage, power surges, overloads, and underloads. It detects voltage fluctuations and unstable power supply — triggering the appropriate response to safeguard the pump and motor.

In addition to protection, Pumptec also provides diagnostic capabilities. It can log data, generate reports, and provide real-time feedback on pump performance. This information helps with analyzing pump behavior, identifying potential inefficiencies or maintenance requirements, and optimizing pump performance.

Overall, Pumptec plays a vital role in enhancing pump reliability, extending equipment lifespan, and reducing costly repairs or replacements.

  • Ep 007 - Water Tanks

    Water tanks:

    • Provide reliable water storage, ensuring a backup water supply during shortages or emergencies
    • Promote water conservation by collecting rainwater and reducing reliance on municipal sources
    • Are crucial for fire protection, providing readily available water for firefighting
    • Enable off-grid living by storing a water supply in remote locations

    TRANSCRIPT:

Water tanks. Also known as well tanks. That's what we're talking about today. Why would you need one? What exactly do they do? Whether for a residential or commercial setting, a water tank can bring numerous benefits to your water system. Let's get started!

    Water Storage:

Obviously, one of the main reasons to have a water tank is to store water. This is especially important in areas with a limited or unreliable water supply. With a water tank, you can collect and store rainwater or even well water, ensuring you have a reliable source during dry spells or emergencies. It gives you peace of mind knowing that you have a backup supply available whenever you need it.

    Water Conservation:

Installing a water tank promotes sustainable water practices by allowing you to harvest rainwater. This collected water can be used for many things including landscaping and irrigation. By using this rainwater, you reduce your reliance on municipal water sources, conserve water, and contribute to a greener environment.

    Fire Protection:

Having a water tank can be a crucial safety measure, especially in areas prone to wildfires. It provides a readily available water source for firefighters to protect your property. In emergencies, every second counts, and a well-maintained water tank ensures you have water readily available to suppress fires before they spread.

    Off-Grid Living:

For those living in remote areas or off-grid properties, a water tank becomes a vital component for your self-sufficient lifestyle. It allows you to store and manage your own water supply, reducing the need for costly and energy-intensive infrastructure. With a well-designed water tank system, you can enjoy the benefits of running water even in the most isolated locations.

From providing a backup water supply during shortages — to promoting water conservation and ensuring fire protection — water tanks are a wise investment in your water system. If you're considering a water tank installation, trust the experts at Tim Beil Plumbing to guide you through the process and deliver top-notch solutions tailored to your needs.

  • Ep 005 - Frozen, Leaking Outdoor Faucet after Winter
    • If you don't see water when you turn on your outdoor faucet, it may have froze or cracked
    • Turn off the water supply and the affected outdoor spigot to prevent further water damage
    • Check inside your home for signs of leaks
    • Disconnect and remove the garden hose before freezing temperatures to avoid freezing and potential leaks

    TRANSCRIPT:

It's now officially summertime. If you go to water your garden, fill up a pool, maybe use a sprinkler — and you turn on your outdoor faucet, also known as a hose bibb or spigot — but you don't see any water — there's a problem. Or maybe you are seeing water — but it's inside your home, rather than outside — where it should be! This is most likely a leaking outdoor faucet that froze over the winter.

Turn Off the Water Supply: The first thing you need to do is turn off that spigot. If you can, also turn off the water supply to the affected outdoor faucet. Each spigot typically has its own shutoff valve, connected to a pipe leading outside. It's usually in the basement, crawl space, or utility room. This will help prevent any further leakage and minimize potential water damage.

If you do have water coming out of the spigot, but it's not the usual full amount — you should check inside your home. Low pressure might indicate a leak. There might be a small leak where water is spilling in to the basement floor or dripping down the wall.

If it's the first time turning on your outside water in the spring or summer — you really should go back inside to inspect just to possibly prevent future problems. Pipes and fixtures that have gone through freezing and thawing may not immediately leak until the water pressure is fully restored. Picture the inconvenience of water leaking into your basement while you're outside, meanwhile you're completely unaware that a pipe has cracked and you have a leak inside. By the time you do notice, there might be more damage and even mold. By taking this precaution, you can avoid potential headaches down the line.

Your garden hose should be disconnected before freezing temperatures arrive to prevent the spigot from freezing. If water is left inside the garden hose and the hose remains attached during cold climates it will increase the chance of it freezing. Some homes have frost-proof spigots, which don't require turning on or off in the fall or spring. But to be extra cautious and prevent any potential leaks, it's still highly recommended to turn off the water to your spigot, and remember: always remove the hose.

If you're unsure about any of this, or need a professional plumber to repair a leak, we're always here to help at Tim Beil Plumbing. TRANSCRIPT:

Welcome back! I am Tom. As you hear, kicking off each of these podcast episodes, I am a Certified Water Specialist and Registered Master Plumber. An overall plumber these days should have knowledge in installation, repair, and maintenance of various plumbing systems. Just a heads up, if you're looking to hire a plumber — whether it be for residential, commercial, or industrial settings — you can't necessarily assume a general overall plumber can help you with everything. Please do your due diligence just to make sure they specialize in precisely what you need. Unfortunately, we've heard too many stories of "there's a guy that does some plumbing" — where we get called to come in and save the day. The overall plumber potentially could fall into that saying you've heard before — you know: "Jack of all trades, master of none." Now, not to scare you but just like in many areas, not all things are created equal. Certainly, you'll want to be sure who you hire is licensed and insured. In fact, at Tim Beil Plumbing we exceed the amount of liability and property insurance required by the Home Improvement Contractors Registration standards.

Installation: Plumbers are involved in the installation of pipes, fixtures, and appliances related to water supply, drainage, and heating systems.

Repairs: When plumbing issues occur, such as leaks, clogs, or malfunctioning fixtures, plumbers are called upon to diagnose the problem and carry out the necessary repairs. We use specialized tools and techniques to fix or replace faulty components.

Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential. Plumbers conduct routine inspections, clean drains, perform preventive maintenance tasks, and address potential problems before they escalate into major issues.

Troubleshooting: Plumbers are skilled troubleshooters who can identify the root cause of plumbing problems. We utilize our expertise to determine the most effective solutions and provide advice to our clients on plumbing system upgrades or improvements.

Compliance and Safety: Plumbers adhere to building codes, regulations, and safety standards to ensure that everything is installed and maintained correctly. We prioritize your safety and take measures to prevent hazards such as leaks or contaminated water.

Customer Service: We pride ourselves on providing professional and courteous service. We listen to customers' concerns, offer guidance, and communicate effectively to explain the problem, proposed solutions, and associated costs.

As this episode comes to an end, I hope you don't mind if I boast a little. At Tim Beil Plumbing, we are a family-owned business, now in our 3rd generation. We've been in business for over 50 years, offering a level of knowledge and skill that is difficult to beat. We handle everything you'd expect from an overall plumber, and we take it to the next level by specializing in Premier Service and Premier Quality with all of our plumbing services and water treatment systems.

  • Ep 003 - Lehigh Valley Water Systems

On this episode Tom Beil, from Tim Beil Plumbing, talks about water systems:

    • Importance of water systems in the Lehigh Valley
    • Potential adverse effects of tap water
    • Drinking water sources in Allentown and Bethlehem
    • Water quality standards
    • Benefits of professional water systems

    TRANSCRIPT:

Living here, in the Lehigh Valley, water systems, are something you really need to consider. Unfortunately, your tap water at different times may harbor microscopic particles that can have adverse effects on your long-term health and well-being. These chemicals and particles can alter the taste and odor of your water, and some microbiological organisms can even make you sick — sometimes chronically, and you might not even realize this is the reason why.

You might be wondering, why should I care about water systems in the Lehigh Valley? I mean, we've got vibrant communities, and bustling cities, we live in a great area. And we certainly do. But let me tell you, having a water system in the Lehigh Valley plays a crucial role in our daily lives, from the moment we turn on the faucet to when we take a bath or shower.

Much of the drinking water in Allentown comes from surface water sources like the Little Lehigh Creek and groundwater sources such as Schantz Spring. The Lehigh County Authority gets its drinking water from Allentown's water system and over a dozen different wells spread across the watershed. A watershed, by the way, is the land area where all the water that falls and eventually drains into the same body of water, either on the surface or through groundwater. In the city of Bethlehem, the water exceeds both federal and state standards for drinking water quality. But just because water here in the Valley's townships, boroughs, and cities are at or above the standard, doesn't necessarily mean it's optimal.

With a professional, high quality water system, you will have access to clean, safe, and reliable water in your home at all times. I'm talking about the water you drink, the water you cook with, and all the water you use for personal hygiene. Because we live in such a beautiful area, we might take for granted how water contributes to the overall quality of our lives — supporting everything from residential neighborhoods to local businesses and industries.

At Tim Beil Plumbing, we understand the importance of water systems in the Lehigh Valley. That's why we're dedicated to providing top-notch plumbing and water solutions. Whether it's installing water treatment systems to improve water quality, water pumps for performance, or fixing plumbing issues to prevent water wastage, we've got you covered. Water systems do matter, and we're here to ensure yours works flawlessly. Until next time, stay hydrated and keep those water systems flowing!
