We wanted to share our three best practices when it comes to
advocacy and provide some thoughts and insights into this fascinating and complicated arena. At its simplest form advocacy is the act of speaking in support of a person, place or cause. Advocacy can take many forms – it can be meeting with a local elected official to educate them on your industry, it can be issuing a newsletter on how a new law will impact your business or it can even be organizing a rally on a particular issue that you care about.
Advocacy Breakdown:
1. Issue Discovery – Home in on the exact problem you are trying to solve and be proactive in identifying solutions to the problem.
2. Personal outreach – Determine who has the ability to create the
change you’re seeking and build a personal relationship with
those stakeholders.
3. Coalition Building – Align with persons or groups that share your
interest in order to enhance and elevate your concern. It’s might
be easy to ignore one voice but its hard to ignore 1,000.

A very special guest joins hosts Jesse & Sid in this episode: Jennifer Wang of Jwang Consulting, who also happens to be the wife of Jesse Torres. They jump right into a high-level conversation of what it’s like to live in a household with dual entrepreneurs, the inspiration and support that comes from that, what It means To “Wangle”, the drive for perfection needed to work in the field of event planning and how to stay alive during a time where events have come to a halting stop.
Jennifer explains that “you have to be creative and organized in order to produce a high-level event in entertainment… [but] I get to project manage something fun”. The balance between right brain and left brain thought processes are what Jennifer illustrates in this passionate and practical conversation.

Understanding the importance of creating a safe experience for her clients and community is an understatement for Sherry Younge. Not only has she kept up with the Covid-19 protocols, and created online spaces for her clients to learn how to cut their own hair through one-on-one coaching sessions but Sherry has made a conscious effort prior to Covid-19 to seek opportunities to address her community’s concern with gentrification by being very involved and visible since to opening of The Artform Studio. Sherry’s intentional and thoughtful approach to her business speaks to her ability to stay viable as we transition.
About Sherry Younge:
Sherry Younge has owned and operated The Artform Studio for the past 13 years, and she has been working to perfect her craft of hair and make up artistry for over 20 years now. Sherry started to learn about the art of hair through the foundation of haircutting courses at Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles, a creative haircut and hair color technique course at Redken in New York, and then furthered her training working at Carlton Hair International. Sherry's favorite brands to use are Seven Haircare, Instyler, Schwarzkopf, Fromm Beauty, Olivia Garden, Celeb Luxury, and Deva Curl. She is now a Deva Curl Cut Specialist who is certified in their techniques of Curl transformations and Curly haircuts.I WAS INSPRIRED TO DO HAIR WHEN...I realized how important it was for me to manage my hair, especially being that I am Filipino and my hair texture is very thick. My mom gave me a hair styling book in the 80s and it was my favorite book to learn how to do different types of braids. I was determined to learn every braid. I would braid my Aunties long beautiful hair, and at nineteen years old my younger sister had asked that I do her hair and makeup for prom. I thought to myself, "I can do this!" MY STYLE IS... Personally for myself, more of a modern day vintage hair and make up style and designing styles that work for my clients. My specialties are in haircutting, hair coloring, era specific hairstyling, and make up. I love designing cuts and color to make my client’s hairstyle last no matter what hair texture they have. I love adding highlights and dimension to haircolor. Vintage styling is my forte - I've always been in love with the details and design of the many classic styles from the 1920’s to the 1990’s. I've just recently found a love for fashion colors - silver, grey, and violets. IF I'M NOT AT ARTFORM, YOU CAN FIND ME ...At Elements Dance Space watching my daughter dance! Sometimes I might jump and take a class as well!

What does it really mean to pivot and stay connected and relevant to your existing customers while developing strategies to market to new ones? Jake Smith, Entertainment Sales Lead at Olson Visual boldly states that the reason they’ve been successful over the years has been by placing huge value in the quality of the product. And during this challenging transition- that has not changed. Through that level of care, customers can rely on feeling safe during a time that is so uncertain in every other aspect.
About Olson Visual:
Bob and Jeannette Olson moved to Los Angeles in the late 1940’s. After working at a photo store and a short-run partnership, Bob Olson founded the Photo Blow-Up Lab on April 1, 1954. They specialized in black and white enlargements in the professional photography industry. They gained wide success by installing photographs for well-known hotels and commercial buildings in Hawaii. The lab became nationally known with orders from Alaska to Arizona.
Jeannette Olson began to work for the firm. Their partnership launched a very prosperous business that reached a wider audience including: interior decorators, advertising agencies, trade show exhibit builders, and Hollywood celebrities. Dennis Hopper was an early customer asking Bob to enlarge his work.
Bob and Jeannette Olson retired in 1984 and passed on the business to their sons: Rick, Dan, and Tom. The brothers changed the name to Olson Color Expansions and expanded the business to museums, events, and trade shows. They continued to work with well-known celebrities including: Arnold Swartzenegger, Barbara Streisand, John Baldessari, Helmut Newton and Michael Jackson.
In the 1990’s Olson Color Expansions stopped providing fiber-based paper and relayed fully on machine-processed (with a resin coating). Their clientele changed from walk-ins to larger businesses in museum, retail, and entertainment sectors.
Next, the company was propelled into the digital era and they acquired new state-of-the-art machines. The first digital printer purchased was a 36-inch wide ink jet. Their next printer allowed them to print sixteen feet wide with unlimited length.
With the constant change in graphics and displays, their name became Olson Visual.
They are now a full-service digital printing and installation firm encompassing all forms of visuals. “It took three of my boys to take my place.” – Bob Olson
