Have you ever lived in the countryside? 你在农村住过吗？
是的，但时间很短。小时候，我每年都在爷爷奶奶家过暑假。他们住在浙江省的农村。
Yes, but only very shortly. When I was little, I used to spend the summer holiday at my grandparents’ home every year. They live in a remote village in Zhejiang Province.

Do you enjoy living in the countryside? 你喜欢住在乡下吗？

Yes, indeed. The countryside is so quiet that I don’t hear the constant noise from traffic, and the air is so fresh. The best thing is that I can eat fresh food picked from the vegetable garden, like eggplant, cucumber and tomatoes. It feels like a different world.

Do you like to smile? 你喜欢微笑吗？

当然。我认为微笑是女孩子最好的化妆品。我奶奶老是说，脸上常有笑，好运跑不了。因为微笑让别人想靠近你，也没有人会对一张笑脸发火。

Absolutely. I believe smile is the best makeup for a girl. And as my grandmother put it, good luck goes to those who always wear smiles on their faces, because smiling makes people want to be near you and nobody will be angry with a smiling person.


When do people smile at others? 人们什么时候对别人微笑？

我能想到两种情况。首先，人们在第一次见面时微笑，以表示他们很友好，想留下一个良好的第一印象。没有人愿意和一个苦脸的陌生人说话。其次，人们在对别人说谢谢的时候经常微笑。这让他们的感谢更加真诚。

I can think of two situations. First, people smile when they meet somebody for the first time, just to show that they’re friendly and want to leave a good first impression. Nobody wants to talk with a stranger who has a sullen face. Second, people often smile when they say thank you to others. It makes their thanks more genuine.

Why do some people throw garbage on the street? 为什么有些人在街上扔垃圾？

有几个原因。首先，他们认为这是公共区域，而不是自己的家，所以他们无需为清洁负责。第二，很多人认为清洁工的工作就是处理街上的垃圾，如果没人扔垃圾，那我们为啥要雇清洁工呢？那是他们的想法，我一点也不同意。

A couple of reasons. First, they think it’s public area, not their own home, so they are not responsible for its cleanness. Second, a lot of people think it’s the cleaner’s job to take care of the garbage on the street, and if nobody throws garbage away, then why should we hire cleaners. That’s howthey think, which I don’t agree at all.



What do you do with garbage when you are on the street?在街上时，你会怎么处理垃圾？

如果有垃圾桶，我会把它扔进垃圾桶；如果附近没有，我就把它放在包里或拿在手上，直到我遇到一个垃圾桶为止。我知道手里拿这个脏纸巾或糖果纸走路很好笑，但不在家时我就是这样处理垃圾的。

If there’s a garbage can, I will throw it in the garbage can; if there is none nearby, I will just keep it in my bag or hold it with my hand until I come across a garbage can. I know it seems funny to walk with a dirty tissue or a candy wrapper in your hand, but that’s how I deal with garbage when I am not at home.

What wild animal do you like most? 你最喜欢什么野生动物？

大象是我最喜欢的野生动物。他们看起来很可爱，尤其是小象。但我爱他们的真正原因是他们是如此平静和无怨言。即使大热天慢慢地行走，他们也不会生气或表现出任何不好的情绪。我欣赏他们积极的生活态度。此外，他们总是生活在群体，互相照顾，而这让我觉得很感人。

Elephant is my favorite wild animal. They look adorable, especially baby elephants. However, the real reason I love them is that they are so calm and uncomplaining. You know, even when they walk slowly in scorching hot weather, they’re not angry or showing any bad moods. I admire their positive attitude to life. Besides, they always live in groups and take care of each other, which I find exceedingly touching.


Have you ever seen any wild animals before?你以前见过野生动物吗？

见过。我小时候周末经常去动物园和野生动物园。所以我看到了很多的野生动物，像老虎、狮子、猴子等等。看到企鹅我特别兴奋；他们是地球上最可爱的动物了。

Yes, I have. In my childhood, I used to visit the zoo and wildlife park on the weekend, therefore, I have seen many sorts of wild animals, like tigers, lions, monkeys, and so on. I was particularly excited to see penguins; they are the cutest animal on the planet.

Do you like your own voice? 你喜欢自己的声音吗？

不喜欢。老实讲，我觉得我的声音太沉闷了。我希望它听起来更清亮一点。和朋友去K歌时，他们总是取笑我的声音，叫我停止用唱歌来谋杀他们。虽然我晓得他们只是在逗我玩，但也不是完全没根据的，反正我对自己声音是没啥自信了。

Not really. To be honest, I think my voice is too dull. You know, I wish it was a bit more clear-sounding. When I go to Karaoke with friends, they always make fun of my voice, and ask me to stop murdering them with my singing. I know they are just teasing me, but there’s some truth in it. Anyway, I don’t have much confidence about my voice.


Has your voice ever changed?你的声音改变过吗？

有啊，只在青春期发生过一次。我是说，初中时，身边的人跟我说声音变了一点。他们说我听起来不再像个小女孩，更成熟了。但也就那一次，之后我自己再没有注意到任何变化。

Yes, it happened only once, during puberty. I mean, in junior high school, people around me told me my voice changed a bit, together with other body changes of course. They said I sounded less like a girl, but more mature. But that was it. Afterwards, I have not noticed any change myself.
