  • Episode #436: From Meal Prep to RINGO: With Serial Entrepreneur Chris Place

Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore interviews long time friend and serial entrepreneur, Chris Place, Founder and CEO of RINGO.

Chris got inspired to create his incredibly innovative product by a gathering of friends in the Florida Keys. During their reunion, they struggled to capture a group photo on a small boat while trying to lean the phone up against their water bottle. (Can you relate?!) This sparked an idea – why not create a water bottle that could also hold a phone very securely?

Chris and team started sketching and soon recognized the multitude of uses the product has for those who don't want to lug around a tripod (many of which are now not permitted in gyms anyway!) The response has been overwhelmingly positive, they have secured design patents, and are currently awaiting a utility patent. Chris's product not only solves a common problem but is also "over engineered" with meticulous attention to detail, making it difficult to replicate. The company is completely self funded and, having gone through this previously, Place states, "In this early stage, 'sales solves everything' is the motto. If you just don't sell, everything stops. If the moment you stop getting that revenue in, you're looking at your employees and thinking, 'Oh, someone's going to have to go here' and nobody wants that."

    Some key moments:

    • Water bottle turns into portable phone tripod.
    • Surprising interest in corporate promotional collaboration opportunities.
    • Outsourcing, low labor, focus on marketing.
    • Embracing vulnerability leads to personal growth.
    • T-shirts, water bottles spur brand loyalty.

    A few key takeaways:

    1. Chris is a serial entrepreneur in the consumer products industry. His previous venture, a lunchbox company called Prep'd, achieved $5 million in sales in its first year.
    2. Chris has now developed a water bottle called Ringo which also functions as a tripod for your phone. It's designed with durability and functionality in mind, using high-quality materials that are "over engineered" according to Place.
    3. The idea came from the frustrating experience of trying to take a group photo on a boat and struggling to prop up the phone with a water bottle. The goal was to create a versatile and reliable product for those who want to take photos without carrying a tripod.

  • Episode #435: KaiaFit Lessons Learned | Franchising, Growth, and the Importance of KPI's.

Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore welcome the powerhouse Mother/Daughter team of Nikki Warren and Coral Warren from KaiaFit

Nikki and Koral are two, super passionate individuals who began their journey in gymnastics. While watching children at gymnastics facilities, they realized the joy and love that came from being active and connected with their bodies. However, they also noticed that many mothers on the sidelines had lost their enthusiasm for fitness and the feeling of "being alive."

This sparked a calling to help both children and women find their passion for physical activity and vibrant living. As experienced coaches, Nikki and Koral recognized that their ability to positively impact children relied on first supporting women. They understood that by empowering women, they could create stronger communities and ultimately benefit the children they worked with. With this in mind, they embarked on a mission to not only coach fitness but to delve into various aspects such as nutrition, movement, and mobility.

They aimed to help women discover what would make their bodies thrive and bring them happiness and from this, KaiaFit was born. Through their unique approach and dedication to individual success, Nikki and Koral have built a reputation for their ability to guide women towards a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.

"Sure, we have 25 locations, but each location is building a strong community. The people that are part of it are out in the community, building a healthier community, building better children, and building stronger families," states Koral.

    Some key moments:

    • Helping children by empowering women through fitness.
    • The Founders' passion for gymnastics leads to success.
    • Gymnastics, obstacle courses, rock climbing - existing traffic, repurpose space.
    • Limited memberships generate more revenue per visit.
    • Franchisors responsible for success of franchisees.
    • Excited team ready to conquer the world!

    A few key takeaways:

    1. Guiding towards success: The Warren's believes in saying yes, but also guiding people towards the right path for success, even if it means not immediately opening a franchise. They offer coaching and community support as alternative ways to be involved in their business.
    2. Balancing community and profit: Initially, the focus was on building a strong community rather than making money, but the importance of being business-minded and financially savvy quickly became apparent. Now, growth and income for franchisees are prioritized, which may mean saying no more often to set people up for success.
    3. Creating value and optimizing time: By potentially collaborating with existing facilities, they can tap into strong foot traffic and provide parents with an opportunity to dedicate time to themselves instead of just being spectators.
    4. Franchising vs. licensing: Pete, Nikki and Coral touch on the differences between franchising and licensing, highlighting the critical responsibility of the franchisor to support and guide the franchisees. Franchisees rely on the franchisor for their profit and loss guidance, while licensing involves less support and more responsibility on the licensee.
    5. Balancing short-term and long-term goals: While the team is interested in empowering people and allowing them to use their brand, they also consider long-term implications and the fit of partnerships.

  • Episode #434: From Fitness to Interconnected Health: Exploring the Evolution of FlexIt

Live from the floor of the March 2023 IHRSA Trade Show in San Diego, host Pete Moore welcomes back (for the third time!) the team of Austin Cohen and Justin Turetsky.

FlexIt's mission is to empower everyone with flexible Interconnected Health experiences, including Virtual Personal Training, Virtual Nutrition, and Virtual Physical Therapy – Wherever, Whenever®. The platform is the ultimate tool for motivation and accountability, helping users reach their health and wellness goals through live, 1-on-1, private sessions with elite fitness and wellness professionals and custom features designed and optimized for training. Each client's program is customized based on their needs, lifestyle, and goals and delivered on a proprietary platform designed and optimized for wellness experiences.

During the pandemic, the team successfully brought clubs and trainers to a virtual marketplace, connecting consumers with fitness experts and incorporating club brands. As things progressed and the pandemic started to fade, they also recognized the need for preventive health services in the growing field of Telehealth. They saw there was a chance to bridge the gap between consumers who don't necessarily need a doctor but want convenient access to fitness and wellness experts.

"I think for us, at our core, we've always tried to have a consistent revenue generating model that is built on good business practices and be able to cut back some of our spend, which was focused on growth and marketing," states Cohen. They offer a wide range of fitness pillars, including high-intensity training, boxing, strength training, and physical therapy. The platform even provides access to doctors of physical therapy for specialized care, such as pre and postnatal training or injury recovery.

FlexIt has also been recognized and awarded by prominent industry publications including Men's Health, Runner's World, and U.S. News & World Report, and was named a "Most Innovative Product of 2021" by Innovation & Tech Today.

    Some key moments:

[00:03:58] Digitizing live two-way fitness experiences for all.

[00:08:03] Industry evolving, not pivoting or changing.

[00:11:17] Entrepreneurial question: different pulse, confluence, coexistence.

[00:14:12] Challenging times for business leaders, uncertain future.

[00:17:15] Synchronous communication leads to personalization and immersion.

    A few key takeaways:

    1. FlexIt has transitioned from focusing solely on virtual personal training to embracing interconnected health. They offer four core pillars of nutrition, physical therapy, low-impact wellness, and fitness training, spanning 28 modalities.
    2. The company has developed its own proprietary technology that optimizes the online personal training experience. Trainers can interact with clients as if they were physically in the same space, using features like pre-recorded videos, drawing on the screen, and sending workout plans.
    3. They draw inspiration from the telehealth industry, where virtual consultations have become more common. They aim to fill the void for preventive health services, providing convenient access for individuals who don't necessarily need a doctor but still want expert guidance in their fitness and wellness journey.
    4. Their technology is applicable in both B2B (business-to-business) and B2C (business-to-consumer) contexts. Their tech is appropriate for use on corporate wellness platforms as well as their direct-to-consumer platform.
    5. FlexIt's ability to adapt their business model as the market evolves is highlighted. They used a methodical approach to educate their clients on the changes and benefits that come with their evolving services.

  • Episode #432: Pickleball is Life-Dill With It! Your New Favorite Show, Coming Soon!

Joining us on this episode of HALO Talks are a cast of veteran actors and incredibly talented individuals who have combined their love for performing, writing, and a newfound passion for pickleball to create something truly special: Pickleball is Life-Dill With It! Watch the hilarious trailer here! Today's guests include Carol Ann Demarco, Susan Gallagher, Catherine Curtin, and Leigh Anne West.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Carol Ann and Leigh Anne found themselves brainstorming ideas for a comedy project. Drawing from their experiences in New York Theatre and indie short films, they came up with the concept of a mockumentary that serves as a bit of a "love letter" to Cape May, the quirky and eccentric characters they encountered in the world of pickleball, and the sport itself.

Despite initial resistance as a former tennis player, Leigh Anne embraced the project wholeheartedly. She and Carol met every Friday to develop the characters and scenarios, created a pilot, and with the addition of powerhouses Catherine and Susan to the team, their project began to really take off.

The pilot, however, is not just about the sport itself. It also serves as a platform to showcase talented actresses, and challenges stereotypes of 'older' women. What started as a personal diary of sorts soon transformed into this hilarious pilot that anyone who has ever picked up a pickleball racquet could relate to in some way. The group also discusses the public's hunger for content and the growing popularity of pickleball as a sport, making this the perfect opportunity to bring "Pickleball Is Life" to the masses. They also touch on the current writer's strike (still happening as of August 2023) which opens doors for production and shooting, highlighting the advantage of having content ready to go once the strike ends.

"We have content that [the networks] can have now . . . instead of 'you need to make your content,' which will take 6 months. We have content that you could have right now and it's really funny, and it is the most popular thing going in the world right now," states Curtin.

    Some key moments:

[00:01:23] Pickleball enthusiasts combine passion for acting.

[00:04:58] New York theater duo creates pickleball mockumentary.

[00:11:57] Agent received email. Offer to play pickleball. Excited to work with familiar faces. Grateful for opportunity and fun experience.

[00:17:07] Proof of concept TV pilot seeks fan base and investors for full season.

[00:18:45] Age of actors not the issue, public's interest is. Pickleball trend creates content opportunity. Writer's strike will create demand for content.

[00:24:15] Mental health and community through fitness.

    A few key takeaways:

    1. Pickleball has gained tremendous popularity, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a sense of community and connection for players of all ages.
    2. The TV pilot "Pickleball is Life: Dill With It!" was created as a love letter to Cape May and the pickleball community, showcasing talented actresses Leigh Anne West, Carol Anne Demarco, Susan Gallagher, and Catherine Curtin.
    3. The project evolved from brainstorming a comedy about experiences in New York Theatre and indie short film into a mockumentary-style TV pilot, inspired by movies like "Best in Show."
    4. The group emphasizes the importance of creating content on the subject of pickleball, as there is public hunger for it and the popularity of the sport provides an opportunity for unique storytelling.
    5. Pickleball is seen as a democratic and inclusive sport, bringing people together regardless of skill level and providing an outlet for fun and teamwork.

  • Episode #431: Russ Meneve-From Successful Stand Up Comic to HALO Entrepreneur

Russ Meneve, an entrepreneur and inventor, experienced a life-changing event when he suffered a severe injury from a free weight bar a few years ago. It left him with a torn shoulder, requiring surgery and a grueling year-plus recovery period. Throughout this challenging journey, Russ realized there was a notable lack of safety measures available in the market to prevent such accidents.

He embarked on a mission to create something that could prevent injuries during free weight lifts. After months of experimentation and development, he and his team successfully invented an absolute game-changer. This innovative device features a laser that runs across the bar, allowing users to let go at any point during a lift. Upon release, the device promptly stops the bar from moving further. The versatility of the product enables it to be easily attached to existing racks and machines in any gym without the need for additional equipment purchases.

Russ's journey from successful stand up comedian, to injury, to recovery, to entrepreneur showcases his resilience and determination. His dedication to ensuring the safety of others and his relentless pursuit of a solution has brought about an incredible invention that has the potential to revolutionize the fitness industry.
