On Gas Tax Honesty Day, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has issued a warning against rising carbon taxes. They complain that the new carbon tax does not appear separately on bills at the pump, meaning drivers pay sales tax on the carbon tax. Will continued taxation actually lead to decreased carbon output? Will consumers simply absorb the cost?
Guest: Christine Van Geyn, Canadian Taxpayer Federation, Ontario Director.
The Federal Liberals will roll out their carbon-pricing scheme to the provinces today. Provinces will have until the end of 2018 to introduce their own price on carbon, and should they fail to do so, Ottawa will impose its own model. How effective will carbon output penalties be? Where will individual consumers see the biggest pricing changes?
Guest: Dr. Warren Mabee, Director of Queens University Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy.

Pier 8 is planned to have a new residential development, which will be alongside an industrial site. The subdivision, which will have 1500 residents, is expected to be impacted by noise and odor resulting from the adjacent industrial site. Critics warn that this should be considered in the planning phase with an outline for how it’s dealt with. How does a community prepare for living next to an industrial site? Are there not previous frameworks to follow?
Guest: Chris Phillips. The City of Hamilton’s lead on the West Harbour Waterfront Project.
The number of opioid prescriptions filled in the Hamilton area is well above the provincial average and climbing. The numbers are alarming considering the ongoing issues communities are having with opioid addiction. With prescriptions being so high, is there a concern about abuse of these drugs and the system?
Guest: Michael Parkinson, Drug Strategy Specialist with the Waterloo Crime Prevention Council.
