In today’s episode, I am joined by the 2nd year head coach of Kingwood High School, Cale Melton. Coach Melton and I go back to Nevada Community High School back in 2014. Coach Melton is in his 18th year of coaching at the high school level. In the spring of 2020, Coach Melton was named the new head coach at Kingwood High School after spending the last 5 years at Highland Park where he was the Defensive Coordinator for the last two years. In this episode we talk about becoming a head coach, navigating the first season through the pandemic, and what he looks forward to this year. Coach Melton is one of the most passionate and caring while still being tough and holding people accountable coaches I have ever had the honor to work with. On today’s episode, I am joined by Coach Tom Blazer. Coach Blazer spent time coaching at Cypress HS, his alma mater. He was the freshmen OL/ST Coordinator in 2009, from 2010-2019 he was the varsity OL/TEs/Run Game Coordinator, as well as 2 seasons of Var ST Coordinator in that span, in addition to 4 seasons as JV OC/ST Coordinator. Coach Blazer coached OL in the 2010 North/South Orange County All-Star Game. In 2019 he helped co-found 5AS1 Offensive Line Training with Kyle Murphy (warhogs56 on Twitter). In his spare time Coach Blazer enjoys grilling, cigars, shooting, archery, reading up in sports performance as well as trying to learn as much as possible from everyone to become the best OL trainer he can be. Amy Goodson, Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD is a registered dietitian and Certified Specialist in Sports Di-e-te-tics. She focuses on overall health, wellness and sports nutrition. Amy has worked with the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, TCU Athletics, Ben Hogan Sports Medicine, Dairy Farmers of America and more.  She is the author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook, a play-by-play on sports nutrition for athletes, parents, coaches and trainers. Its portable, flipbook size is perfect for a gym bag or weight room. Amy is also the co-author of Swim, Bike, Run, Eat and nutrition contributor to retired NFL Player Donald Driver’s book, The 3-D Body Revolution. In addition, she owns RD Career Jumpstart, a business designed to help dietetic students, interns and new registered dietitians determine and take the steps necessary to reach their dream career. Kristi King is currently a Senior Dietitian at Texas Children’s Hospital & a Clinical Instructor for Baylor College of Medicine. She has an undergraduate degree from Florida State University and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Texas. She has also served as a nutrition source for many media outlets. In this episode, I talk with Strength and Conditioning Coach and Entrepreneur, Micah Kurtz. Micah Kurtz is the Assistant Athletics Director & Director of Sports Performance at Windermere Preparatory School. In addition, he consults on projects regarding youth athletic development education for the NFL, USA Basketball, USA Football, and Nike Football. Previously, he was the Director of Strength and Conditioning at AC Flora high school (Forest Acres, South Carolina). During his time there, AC Flora won 14 state championships and was twice named the state’s athletic program of the year.

Coach Kurtz also serves as the Strength and Conditioning Consultant Coach to the 9-time high school basketball national champions and winner of the 2016 Dick’s National Tournament Oak Hill Academy.  During his time there he has worked with NBA players Sindarius Thornwell, Quinn Cook, Keldon Johnson, and Cody and Caleb Martin.

Kurtz has been named a state strength coach of the year three times and was named the NHSSCA Southeast Strength Coach of the Year in 2021, a Top 40 under 40 Sports Professional by Coach & AD Magazine in 2018, and the NSCA National Strength Coach of the Year in 2016.

In this episode, I talk with the Director of Sports Performance & Nutrition for Mesquite ISD, Blake Cundiff. Coach Cundiff and I had the pleasure of working together when he and I both joined Mesquite ISD in 2016. Prior to coming to Mesquite ISD, Coach Cundiff spent several seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Texas State football team. During his 22-year career in the strength and conditioning field, Cundiff has trained a wide variety of athletes ranging from high school football, baseball, and hockey players to NFL, NHL and MLB stars such as Pro Football Hall of Fame members Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, and Emmitt Smith. He also trained NHL All-Star Brett Hull. Cundiff joined Texas State’s staff after serving as the strength and conditioning coach at Albany from 2008-April 2011, where he worked with the football and basketball teams, and serving as the executive sports performance director at Velocity Sports Performance in Missouri City, Texas from Mar. 2007-July 2008. He also was an associate director of strength and conditioning at Minnesota, where he was involved with all aspects of the Golden Gopher football strength program from 2005-07. Prior to his stint at Minnesota,  Cundiff was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1997-2000. Dallas advanced to the playoffs twice during his tenure. Before coaching in the NFL, Cundiff spent four years as an assistant strength coach at North Texas from 1993-97, and was the head strength coach for the Grapevine High School football program for two years. His experience also includes being the owner and director of Prostar Sports Performance. In addition, he served as the strength coach for the 1994 and 1995 Emmitt Smith Football Camps,  and as the director of strength and conditioning for the 1995 Dallas Stars Junior Hockey Camp. He also was a speed, strength, and conditioning consultant for the Dallas Stars. A Texas native, Cundiff is a member of the NHSCA, earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology and injury rehabilitation at North Texas in 1995.
