Stretch your quads, we're back on a Cusack run and discussing Diana's pick America's Sweethearts (2001). This is Polina's first time watching and she explains the first fifteen minutes set up a satire that the rest of the movie did not pay off. Due to her habit of fast forwarding, Diana has memories of a more emotionally stable version of John Cusack's Eddie.
A movie publicist deals with the messy public split of his movie's co-stars while keeping reporters at bay while a reclusive director holds the film's print hostage. Stars Julia Roberts, John Cusack, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Billy Crystal, Hank Azaria, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, Seth Green, Larry King, Rainn Wilson, Eric Balfour, and Ann Cusack. We discuss Diana's pick It Could Happen to You (1994). Young Diana was more interested in the lottery spending montages than the budding romance. This is Polina's first time watching the movie and naturally she noticed Nicolas Cage's uncharacteristically subdued performance.
A police officer promises to share his lottery ticket with a waitress in lieu of a tip. Stars Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Perez, Wendell Pierce, Isaac Hayes, Seymour Cassel, Stanley Tucci, Red Buttons, Richard Jenkins, plus Vincent Pastore as Bowling Team Member #1 and Emily Deschanel as Paint Throwing Fur-Activist. Ryan returns with his pick The Bourne Identity (2002) and a thoughtful take on Jason and Marie. Diana agrees there is more to the couple than a convenient romance plot device. Polina really likes Matt Damon and his sweaters.
A man is picked up by a fishing boat, bullet-riddled and suffering from amnesia, before racing to elude assassins and attempting to regain his memory. Stars Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Julia Stiles, Gabriel Mann, and Walton Goggins. (from IMDb.com)

Polina's pick (original title: Como Agua Para Chocolate) ignites a fiery passion, terrible attempts at the Spanish language, and an explanation of magical realism. In addition to the film spoiling our “what happens after the movie” game, Diana was disappointed about the ending she was forced to accept. Despite that, both agreed the film was very enjoyable and could not stop praising the film's highlight: middle sister Gertrudis.
The youngest daughter in her family, the beautiful Tita (Lumi Cavazos) is forbidden to marry her true love, Pedro (Marco Leonardi). Since tradition dictates that Tita must care for her mother, Pedro weds her older sister, Rosaura (Yareli Arizmendi), though he still loves Tita. The situation creates much tension in the family, and Tita's powerful emotions begin to surface in fantastical ways through her cooking. As the years pass, unusual circumstances test the enduring love of Pedro and Tita. Also stars Regina Torné, Mario Iván Martínez, Ada Carrasco, Yareli Arizmendi, Claudette Maillé, Pilar Aranda, Farnesio de Bernal, Joaquín Garrido, Rodolfo Arias, Margarita Isabel, Sandra Arau, and Andrés García Jr. (from Google.com & Wikipedia.org)

Our first ever guest Jen is back and gets us out of our mediocre rom-com rut with The Fifth Element (1997). The stunning visuals and fun story captivated all three of us.
In the colorful future, a cab driver unwittingly becomes the central figure in the search for a legendary cosmic weapon to keep Evil and Mr. Zorg at bay. Stars Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, Luke Perry, and Tommy 'Tiny' Lister. (from IMDb.com)

Diana's pick I.Q. (1994) hits all of the points on the romantic comedy cliché checklist like a well researched physics thesis. This is Polina's first time watching, but recognized so much of Princeton portrayed from when she grew up there. Fun fact: the movie theater in the film is the same one young Polina saw A Room with a View (episode 10).
A mechanic romances the mathematician niece of physicist Albert Einstein, with help from Einstein and his friends. Stars Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan, Walter Matthau, Lou Jacobi, Gene Saks, Joseph Maher, Stephen Fry, Tony Shalhoub, Frank Whaley, Charles Durning, and Keene Curtis. (from IMDb.com)

Polina counters Diana's Steve Martin movie from last episode with her pick Roxanne (1987). By the end, you will thoroughly know how she feels about Daryl Hannah's curly hair. Diana sings The Police within the first minute of the show.
In this modern take on Edmond Rostand's classic play "Cyrano de Bergerac," C. D. Bales (Steve Martin) is the witty, intelligent and brave fire chief of a small Pacific Northwest town who, due to the size of his enormous nose, declines to pursue the girl of his dreams, lovely Roxanne Kowalski (Daryl Hannah). Instead, when his shy underling Chris McConnell (Rick Rossovich) becomes smitten with Roxanne, Bales feeds the handsome young man the words of love to win her heart. Also stars Shelley Duvall, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Max Alexander, Michael J. Pollard, Steve Mittleman, Damon Wayans, Matt Lattanzi, Shandra Beri, Jean Sincere, Thom Curley, Ritch Shydner, and Kevin Nealon. (from Fandango.com and Wikipedia.org)

Diana hesitated with her pick My Blue Heaven (1990), but is validated with romantic comedy juggernaut Nora Ephron as the film’s writer. On rewatch, she realized this movie provided her greatest lesson on how to dance (move your hips!) As Polina was not a big fan of this movie, we spend a bit of time talking about Vinnie’s haircut and Barney’s system of eating pancakes.
A mob informant makes life crazy for the FBI man guarding him and the D.A. wanting him back in jail. Stars Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Joan Cusack, Melanie Mayron, Bill Irwin, Carol Kane, William Hickey, Deborah Rush, Daniel Stern, and Colleen Camp. (from Amazon Prime and Wikipedia.org)

As Hawktober continues, it's unclear who claims Dead Poet's Society (1989) as her pick. It's irrelevant as the film was the catalyst for many long term crushes. Ethan and Robert and Josh. Oh my!
Set in 1959 at the fictional elite conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy, it tells the story of an English teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry. Stars Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, Gale Hansen, Norman Lloyd, Kurtwood Smith, Dylan Kussman, James Waterston, Allelon Ruggiero, Alexandra Powers, Leon Pownall, and George Martin.
