  • Moonstruck (1987)

For our one year anniversary, we discuss Polina's pick Moonstruck (1987). She digs deep as she shares seeing it as a teenager, her repeat viewings, and how this was her go-to topic when speaking to adults. Despite her better judgment, Diana gives into her wolf and does her Nicolas Cage impression.

Loretta Castorini (Cher), a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother (Nicolas Cage) of the man she has agreed to marry (Danny Aiello). Also stars Olympia Dukakis, John Mahoney, and Vincent Gardenia. (from IMDb.com)

  • Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

Hey nonny nonny, brace yourself for farce. We're talking about Diana's pick Much Ado About Nothing (1993). This movie made it onto Diana's radar as she went through her Robert Sean Leonard infatuation. Polina is quick to point out that performing Shakespeare is not a strength of Keanu Reeves. We earn our explicit tag with liberal use of the words “bastard” and “whore”.

Young lovers Hero (Kate Beckinsale) and Claudio (Robert Sean Leonard), soon to wed, conspire to get verbal sparring partners and confirmed singles Benedick (Kenneth Branagh) and Beatrice (Emma Thompson) to wed as well. Also stars Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Michael Keaton, Imelda Staunton, Richard Briers, Brian Blessed, and Phyllida Law. (from IMDb.com)

  • Say Anything...(1989)

We made it to our 25th movie and end our Cusack Run as we talk about Polina’s pick Say Anything... (1989). To Polina, Lloyd Dobler holding the boom box over his head is shorthand for the grand romantic gesture. On her viewing of the film, Diana observes that even though Lloyd is “perfect in every way” and manages to do “everything right” he still has to fight for the relationship.

A noble underachiever and a beautiful valedictorian fall in love the summer before she goes off to college. Stars John Cusack, Ione Skye, John Mahoney, Lili Taylor, and directed by Cameron Crowe. (from IMDb.com)

  • Better Off Dead... (1985)

As we continue our Cusack Run, we talk about Diana’s pick Better Off Dead... (1985). Polina missed this film growing up, but likes its absurdist nature and complements the way it encapsulates the constant humiliation one feels as a teenager. It was a television staple in Diana's house and is also the catalyst of her first celebrity crush.

Better Off Dead... tells the story of high school student Lane Myer who is suicidal after his girlfriend breaks up with him shortly before Christmas. Stars John Cusack, Diane Franklin, Amanda Wyss, Aaron Dozier, Curtis Armstrong, Kim Darby, Dan Schneider, and David Ogden Stiers (from Wikipedia.org).

  • High Fidelity (2000)

In lap two of our Cusack Run, we talk about Diana’s pick High Fidelity (2000). Diana was very nervous about misquoting her favorite (no! incorrect!) most influential movie. Polina gushes over Iben Hjelie’s character Laura. An hour was not enough to cover it all!

Rob, a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress. Stars John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Jack Black, Todd Louiso, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, Tim Robbins, Lili Taylor, and Natasha Gregson Wagner. (from IMDb.com)

  • Being John Malkovich (1999) & guest Ryan Skonnord

We begin our John Cusack series of episodes with the obvious Cusack classic and Polina's pick Being John Malkovich (1999)....wait, what? Helping us tackle this head scratching but hilarious film is Ryan Skonnord of married to Diana fame. Polina associates this film with an unstable period in her life. Ryan shares the parallels between his teenage self and the interactions between Craig (Cusack) and Maxine (Keener). Diana hates everyone in this film, but loves that jewel thief movie. A puppeteer discovers a portal that leads literally into the head of movie star Being John Malkovich. This first time Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman collaboration stars John Cusack, Catherine Keener, Cameron Diaz, Orson Bean, Mary Kay Place, Charlie Sheen, and John Malkovich. (from IMDb.com) If you're comfortable with Get Out spoilers, here is Jordan Peele discussing the connections between the two films: https://youtu.be/hBvcngHRTFg?t=7m59s

  • Pretty In Pink (1986) & Alysa Lucas from Best Forevers

We geek out about Pretty In Pink (1986) with guest Alysa Lucas, host of Best Forevers: A Podcast for Kindred Spirits. She discusses how her feelings towards Duckie and Blane evolved and dazzles us with her uber knowledge and expertise on relationships. Plus prom talk!

With our apologies, some technical difficulties come up with Polina's audio. And Diana couldn't find the name of the dog.

Quintessential Brat Pack high school film about Andie from the wrong side of the tracks, her longtime friend Duckie who has a crush on her, and rich kid Blane who wants to date her despite the pressure from his snobby friends. As Andie starts falling for Blane, she begins to realize that dating someone from a different social sphere is not easy. Stars Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, Annie Potts, and Harry Dean Stanton. (modified from Fandango.com)

  • Secretary (2002)

After Diana recovers from a bright red complexion, she opens up about her pick Secretary (2002). Polina is surprised by the selection, but very excited to discuss the movie. For those celebrating Valentine's Day, this movie is not a how-to manual for BDSM (or appropriate workplace relations).

A young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, gets a job as a secretary to a demanding lawyer, where their employer-employee relationship turns into a sexual, sadomasochistic one. Stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Spader, Jeremy Davies, and Leslie Ann Warren. (From IMDb.com)

Diana mentions this article: Is Secretary Just as Bad as Fifty Shades? Erika Moen On the Other Mr. Grey by Dan Savage.

  • Purple Rain (1984)

Polina has so many feelings as we discuss her pick Purple Rain (1984). She limits herself to just an hour and shares her thoughts on the film, the music, and the sensuality of Prince. Diana is a Purple Rain and Prince blank slate and learns more about purifying herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.

truculent: 1) fierce; cruel; savagely brutal. 2) brutally harsh; vitriolic; scathing. 3) aggressively hostile; belligerent. (From dictionary.com)

A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance, and his own dissatisfied band, as his star begins to rise. Staring Prince, Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos, and Clarence William, III. (From IMDb.com)

  • Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991)
No need to adjust your antenna, we're talking about Diana's pick Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991). Originally the movie was a chance to gush over Josh Charles, but on second viewing, there is much to admire in Christina Applegate's Sue Ellen. Extra points for a cleaning montage.    Five siblings are left alone all summer when their mom leaves town and the evil babysitter bites the dust. Stars Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy, Josh Charles, Keith Coogan, Jayne Brook, Concetta Tomei, Kimmy Robertson, Danielle Harris, Christopher Pettiet, and Robert Hy Gorman. Extra creep factor provided by John Getz and David Duchovny. (From IMDb.com) Tweet us @HEAMCast, like us on Facebook @HappilyEverAftermath, and e-mail us at [email protected].
