Happily Ever Aftermath

Justine brings and shares her powers as we talk about her pick Practical Magic (1998). When she was a teen, it was about the love, magic, and beating the bad guy. On subsequent re-watches, she saw the haunting as the supernatural version of escaping an abusive relationship. As she discusses the plot and symbolism, Diana goes through this revaluation in real time.

In a new twist, Ryan's pick Blade Runner 2049 (2017) showcases a romance between an android and a hologram. We're celebrating Frasuary with Diana's pick Mrs. Winterbourne (1996). She quickly points out this movie is While You Were Sleeping meets the '90s Sabrina remake. Ryan had to hold her hand as she dealt with the rewatch cringe. Fortunately Brenda Fraser's charm validates her choice.

As a collective family decision (officially, Apollo's pick), we discuss National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 (1993). Prepare for a less structured episode more in the spirit of previous ones about Scott Pilgrim, Newsies, and the KFC movie. Plus a lot of quotes.

Jackson, Jon Lovitz, Tim Curry, Kathy Ireland, William Shatner, F. Murray Abraham, Charlie Sheen, Denis Leary, an uncredited Whoopi Goldberg, an undiscovered Denise Richards, and many cameos.

Diana's pick Coming to America (1988) is an often quoted movie at extended family dinners. Ryan was introduced when a different Eddie Murphy/John Landis movie was unavailable to stream. Diana picked The Hating Game (2021), which has been operating as her most recent comfort watch. It's best if you prepare for big book versus movie comparisons. Despite her criticisms, she swears she really enjoyed the movie. Ryan expertly offers the "has not read the book" perspective.

Instead of the moon, Diana lassos long time friend Kevin Lester to talk about It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Kevin shares that he appreciated how the movie didn't shy away from the darker elements and the struggle of a character always trying to do right by others. With many re-watches, he finds more to enjoy each time. Diana finally crosses this movie off her to-watch list, but may have to watch again since she saw the colorized version.
