Jack parachutes into France not knowing who he can trust, and meets Paulette, an SOE radio operator posing as a teenage girl.
This chapter, Chaux, is named after the small airfield where Jack’s Lysander transport lands. This airfield still exists and was indeed supposedly ploughed up after 1940, but here it has been secretly reactivated with a surrounding disguise of maize.
