Whenever I have been asked what best prepared me for serving in elected office, I usually quip that before I got into politics, I served in a unit that specialized in unconventional warfare and counter-insurgency, and I'm amazed at how well that prepared me for domestic politics. It's, of course, half tongue in cheek, but there is no question that my time as a Green Beret taught me a lot about leadership. Mike Waltz is the first Green Beret elected to Congress, and he has served with distinction both in the military and as an elected official. He wrote a book, "Hard Truths: Think and Lead Like a Green Beret," where he explained what is unique and compelling about the Special Forces style of leadership.
