HardLore

It’s that time of year… The wind is howling, the sky gets darker much earlier… What better way to wallow in the depths of Autumn's despair once again than by celebrating 40 of our favorite “feel bad” (depressing) albums of all time. We each picked 20 records, in no particular order until our respective Top 5s. Look to them in your darkest hour, and they will guide you where you need to go.

We're joined by Nancy Barile, award-winning author of "I'm Not Holding Your Coat", an insightful chronicle of her life as an OG Philadelphia/Boston punk who lived through the golden age of hardcore music as it evolved in real time before her eyes.

The Ramones, Bad Brains, Misfits, Minor Threat, Black Flag... You name it, she saw it. We talk about the legendary brawl in Kensington, booking the infamous "Gathering of the Tribes" show, cold calling CBGBs to get bands booked, and bumping elbows with just about every legendary figure in hardcore punk, and much more.

Her husband, the late great Al Barile of SSD, was a pioneer of the straight edge movement and a name brought up often on HardLore throughout the years. He sadly passed away in April of 2025, and we talk all about their chance meeting, his impact on us, and share stories of Al through the years and look back at his perception of how straight edge and hardcore music have grown since his early days in SSD. An incredibly informative and cathartic conversation and an episode we've wanted to make happen for a long time.

Thank you Nancy for joining us and all of you for watching/listening. RIP Al Barile.

Happy Halloween HardLore all you ghouls and goblins out there! To celebrate the best time of year properly, we've finally done it... We've embarked on the very spooky quest of ranking every Danzig era Misfits song in proper tier list form.

Pre game the best day of the year with us as we break down the best and worst of the best punk band ever.

Jami Morgan of Code Orange & nowhere2run Productions returns to HardLore after 2+ years to talk about the gradual ending of the band after their latest album "The Above", 10 years of "I Am King", their disastrous last show at Download Fest, his recent work in music and film production with nowhere2run, and A LOT more.

a 2+ hour hilarious, cathartic chat with a longtime friend of the show. This incredibly in-depth and open conversation is one that both fans and potential detractors of Jami's work will be bound to enjoy.

It's time... We have tasked ourselves to finally crown the best hardcore band whose definitive work was done in the 1990's. We included a special write-in section below for you to fill in yourself (and to finally include more than 32 bands).

To the victor go no spoils, but we hope you all have fun. Enjoy.

HardLore's spooky spin-off is back... Welcome to HauntLore VII: Where we explore The very haunted Chicago Metro.

This iconic Chicago landmark broke ground in 1927, but transitioned into an all purpose live music venue and dance club in 1979, and the basement's "Smartbar" was one of the earliest regular homes to Industrial music throughout it's infancy...

But a few mysteries and tragedies haunt the walls of the Metro, where a dramatic suicide, the tragic death of a child, and a pair of disembodied legs are said to roam the building at night. Watch as we thoroughly explore the unseen corners of this nearly 100 year old build and learn the sad origins of the spirits within. Thanks to Joe, Kristy, Skunk, Three and the Metro for having us!

HardLore is joined by AFI vocalist Davey Havok in person at Brain Dead Studios for part 2 of this landmark episode.

The second half of this 4+ hour conversation contains all things AFI from 2003 to present day, starting with their historic launch into the mainstream with their 2003 masterpiece, and many people's gateway to punk, hardcore, etc: "Sing the Sorrow", the nearly impossible task of following it up with the 2006 smash hit "Decemberunderground", the sudden end of the commercial success with "Crash Love", the miracle of "Burials", and all things "Blood Abum", "Bodies" and beyond as we prepare for the arrival of their new album and biggest sonic departure yet, "Silver Bleeds the Black Sun..." via Run For Cover Records.

We hope you enjoy part 2 of this incredible conversation and we thank Davey for his time, and Brain Dead for the space.

Make up by the great and powerful Leah Carmichael.

HardLore is joined by AFI vocalist Davey Havok in person at Brain Dead Studios for a landmark episode, weeks before the release of their new album "Silver Bleeds the Black Sun" on Run For Cover Records.

Part 1 of this 4+ hour conversation begins with Davey's origin to punk/hardcore music, and by association, straight edge and veganism. We thoroughly dive into AFI's chronology, beginning in 1991 when he started the band with drummer Adam Carson in high school, to all the twists and turns before finally adding long time bass player Hunter Burgan, and the guitar player that would ultimately define the AFI sound: Jade Puget.

We discuss "Answer That and Stay Fashionable", frustrations with Nitro Records throughout "Very Proud of Ya", "Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes" and beyond, fully coming into their own with "Black Sails in the Sunset", wearing their love of the Misfits on their sleeves on the "A Fire Inside" & "All Hallows" EPs, "The Art of Drowning" being their first record to chart on Billboard, his experience making the Son of Sam record with the 2000 lineup of Samhain just a few years before "Sing the Sorrow" would take over the world, the severe damage done to his voice by singing in his iconic incomparable register throughout the past three decades, and much, MUCH more.

We hope you enjoy part 1 of this incredible conversation and we thank Davey for his time, and Brain Dead for the space. Through our bleeding, we are one.

Make up by the legendary Leah Carmichael, who expertly covered up the most horrific zit I’ve ever had. I’m serious. She’s a magician.
