  • Water Fight Week 4 – No More Fight

    OPENING ILLUSTRATION:

Prepare yourself to want to say, “Awe…” at the end of this story.  One of my earliest memories was hiding under a table in our living room.  It had been pushed up against a wall so we could clean.  I don’t know if every family is like this, but when our family came to visit my parents went crazy thinking we had to clean our house to the nth degree.  And my family growing up were slobs - that’s a nice way of saying it.  I was under that table crying my eyes out because my dad had told me to clean a particular room, my mom had told me to clean the bathroom, and my older brother had yelled at me and told me to put a bunch of junk away.  I was under that table crying because I couldn’t do all of them at once and I was afraid they were all going to be angry with me so I hid…

Can I tell you a secret about me and you?

When we were growing up, we all learned ways of dealing with the brokenness in this world - patterns of living, paths to walk on that seemed to “save” us…

For me, hiding and escaping became my mechanism - when things get painful - I escape by making things fun and funny…  and guess what…

Hiding or escaping became a type of salvation for me…

    b

And it worked - for a while until it didn’t…

    I’m not alone in this

Some of you are the opposite of me

you don’t try to escape, you try to control - you found that when you stood up and took the wheel - that you felt better, so you became a controller

Some of you need to bring things into order - and you have to have everything perfect all the time and perfection was your salvation…

For some of you, it was relationships and people - needing people in your world who could make you feel good and keep you from being alone

There are a million ways that we all set up idols to run to for salvation

    b

But any salvation that is not found in Jesus leads to death

I want to read you a passage Jesus read about Himself…  Listen to it:

    Isaiah 61:1-2

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

because the Lord has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives

and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor

    Good news to the poor

    Bind up the brokenhearted

    Proclaim freedom for the captives

    Release from darkness for prisoners

    b

Let me be clear - J

  • Water Fight Week 3 – Fighting God

Today we look at an old story of arrogance and pride.  Our hope is that we will all be challenged by the end, to refocus our hearts on God, and what he's doing as we investigate living differently.  GIVE TODAY, text any amount to (859) 459-0316  to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give .

    -------------------

    OPENING ILLUSTRATION:

Years ago, shortly after I had come to Christ I was riding in the car with my pastor and mentor Dan Mitchell.  I had gone all-in on Jesus.  We had been in the car for quite a while when Dan broke the silence and said, “Kent, do you know what humility is?”  I was honest with him and said, “no” to which he replied, “well, you don’t have any…”

Ha, man, sometimes you need a truth-teller in your life - someone who is not afraid to tell you how it is.

That conversation literally changed the entire course of my life.

Today, because I had no humility, I want to look at

A story of what happens when a lack of humility is out of control.

We are jumping into ancient history…

    Story of Israel…

Centuries before Jesus would come on the scene - the Israelites had originally gone to Egypt during a famine for help.  They eventually became disdained by the Egyptians and put into slavery for 430 years - 430 years they’ve been crying out for God’s rescue.  When along comes a man named Moses - his first 40 years he is the adopted son of the Pharaoh’s daughter.  He kills a man who is mistreating a Jewish man and he is exiled into the desert for 40 more years.  When God calls him.  Moses goes back to Egypt as a well-seasoned older man.  When he gets there he goes before Pharaoh and tells him what God tells him to say

    “Let my people go”

    ILLUSTRATION:

Have you ever known someone whose power of their position went to their head?  This is Pharaoh.

This guy has only known power and control - his word is final…

… and finally, there is a competing word to his…

God has spoken and said “Let my people go"

There is something really interesting in this whole exchange that goes on for chapters in the book of Exodus…

God will send plagues upon the Egyptians

for a while, the scripture tells us that Pharaoh hardened his heart against God, but eventually it changes and starts to say, “God hardened his heart.

    Look at this list…

God sends 10 plagues against Pharaoh…

    1. Blood: Pharaoh’s heart “became hard” (7:22)
    2. Frogs: Pharaoh “hardened his own heart” (8:15)
    3. Gnats: Pharaoh’s heart “was hard” (8:19)
    4. Flies: “Pharaoh hardened his own heart” (8:32)
    5. Livestock die: Pharaoh’s heart “was hard” (9:7)
    6. Boils: “The Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (9:12)
    7. Hail: Pharaoh “hardened his own heart” (9:34)
    8. Locusts: God announces that he has “hardened Pharaoh’s heart” (10:1,10:20)

  • Week 4 – Faith vs. Works

I hate being out of control, my natural tendency is to try and get control back.  Today's message we are going to look at ways we all try and get control back spiritually and the way faith offers a better path forward. GIVE TODAY, text any amount to (859) 459-0316  to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give .

    -------------------
OPENING ILLUSTRATION: I HATE being out of control-Riding on the back of a motorcycle with another guy- I do NOT want to be hugging another man for my life-Getting in a plane with a “Hobby” pilot - I prefer to die on the ground from normal things like a heart attack - not from smashing into it at 100 mph -Mowing my side yard on a 30-degree angle, back wheels kicking out, me sitting all sideways trying not to die!
I HATE being out of control
We’ve all felt this, right -The company you work for got bought out and new ownership - everything’s changed, you feel like the new person, even though most tenure - out of control - Go from no kids to 3 kids in 3 years - never on time, never get your hair done, covered in puke - out of control - As you age, things that used to come to your memory easily totally escape you, names, places, faces - you’re watching control slip through your fingers
We’ve all felt being out of control, and we all hate it.

What do you do when you feel out of control?

SCRIPTURE: I want to take you to two scriptures this morning…Abraham is still called “Abram” at this point - He is the person that all Jewish people will point back to as their father.  But at this point, He’s completely fatherless - he has followed God away from his home to a new land, but he’s worried because he hasn’t had any children yet - he’s getting old and is worried he might never have any kids…  Listen

Genesis 15:1-6 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield,[a] your very great reward.[b]” 2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Abram is out of control in his life - I don’t know how old he is at this point, but in the next story he’ll be 86 years old and his wife is trying to finagle getting him an offspring by forcing him to sleep with her servant-best guess he’s in his 80’s…
Notice, Abram’s response to an out-of-control situation was to trust God 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Let me show you how most of us handle out-of-control situations…

Galatians 3:1-14 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?[

  • Week 3 – Paul’s Story

Most of us don't realize the battles that have been fought for the gospel to have made its way to us.  Tune in to learn about some of the ways Paul fought for us and to be challenged about what we will give to the next generation!  GIVE TODAY, text any amount to (859) 459-0316  to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give .

    -------------------
OPENING ILLUSTRATION: Ever had to fight the same fight twice?-Maybe you beat cancer and then had a recurrence and had to fight it again-or with your kids, you've had the same exact argument about cleaning your room a million times-Or you are for the 10th time having the same coaching conversation with your new salesman trying to get him to JUST do his job
Paul gets it, Paul in the book of Galatians is fighting a fight and a battle he’s already won once…
He has been describing to the Galatians who he was - the history they already knew - he had been a persecutor of Christians-He had been zealous about the faith of his fathers - the Jewish faith-and he had understood that Christianity seemed to be a perversion of it
Paul’s story was amazing, he went from being the guy that dragged Christians out of their home, to being the guy who was leading people to become Christians-he had an incredible conversion story - God blinded his eyes and called him-he told him he would suffer for the call God was placing on his life
Paul began preaching to non-Jewish people - the gentiles and as he did, they began to turn to Jesus in droves
Paul begins to do ministry in the church at Antioch-he and Barnabas are sent out on their first missionary journey-and when they return, they find out that there have been people coming from Israel to try and tell the gentile Christians that Jesus was not enough for them
This is the first time Paul has had to fight for Christians whom he has had a part in leading to know Jesus…

Acts 15:1-2 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.

We talked about this last week a little bit.

There were Jewish Christians coming to the non-Jewish Christians, and they were telling them, "You have to become Jewish to follow Jesus"

    And that starts with circumcision…

ILLUSTRATION: I’ve had some bad jobs in life - done some things I’d never want to do again…  But trust me, if becoming a Christian was dependent upon you getting circumcised, I’d have my work cut out for me… Pun intended!
There is a reason Paul and Barnabas get into a sharp dispute with them
They are putting up unnecessary barriers to becoming a Christian
Paul and Barnabas are offering a completely new way of life and these guys are wanting to drag people into a way of life that doesn’t work…

As a matter of fact, the law was set up to show you how you couldn’t make it work

And so Paul, Barnabas, and Titus make their way to Jerusalem to get advice and a ruling from the leaders in Jerusalem…
Listen to how Paul describes that encounter from Galatians

Galatians 2:1-2 Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2 I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.

Paul wants to make sure the race he has run is not in vain

OPENING: Years ago, I was getting ready to go to sleep when my phone rang - this was before “do not disturb” on phones and before “spam” alerts.  So, I answered my phone.  On the other end was this guy who said, “is this Pastor Kent?”  I thought, “oh no, someone’s in trouble,”  I said, “it is, how can I help you?”  he told me his name and then immediately began to go into a tirade about how Christians are dumb for not believing in science and how he was an atheist who randomly calls Pastors to debate them and tell them how dumb they are.

I had two choices at this point, hang up or engage…  I of course decided to engage :)
I think we talked for an hour.  What I found out is this guy had grown up in a conservative Christian household and he had been confronted with a lot of other ideas when he went to school and college and eventually completely flipped on his faith and now sees it as his goal to stop pastors from filling peoples heads with nonsense…
    He’s not alone, right?

We live in a world that is full of competing messages about what to put your faith in.

On top of that, there are even more messages telling you what living out that faith should look like.

I just spent a little time the other thinking about the different versions of spirituality you can find in our world with about a 3-second search on google or turning on the radio station…
-It’s a popular thing to meditate now - I’m reading a business leadership book and one of the major points was for people to “meditate” - although he was wouldn’t to tell them what to meditate on-jump on tic tock and get advice about anything spiritual-people who only want a church that will say what they want to hear -some people think good people get into heaven, some people say no one's good enough to get into heaven-Even country music has a version of faith that has you in church on Sunday, in the bar on Friday
How do you know what to believe in a world of competing messages?

We live in a world with so many messages about spirituality what do you believe?

Here’s where I come back to every time, and it’s what I came back to with that science guy on the phone…
The only thing that matters is what you believe about Jesus…

Because if Jesus is really real and did what He said He did, then that changes everything, if He didn’t, then you can believe whatever you want.

I think so many of us aren’t settled, really settled, on Jesus, and because of that, we can quickly get sucked into other things

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: A few weeks ago our family had left to go do something and when we got back, our garage door wouldn’t go up…  Now, you need to know something about my wife…  You’ve heard the expression leave no rock unturned?  My wife leaves no lock unturned.  The moment that garage door didn’t go up, my heart sunk, because my wife locks everything.  I started checking every door and window in the house and nothing was unlocked.  I know what you’re thinking, “Kent, you don’t have a key?”  I do have a key, but on our front door the house came with one of those hotel locks you flip the little metal loop over the knob and the door can open like 3 inches.  And my wife…  leaves no lock unturned!

I could get the door open 3 inches.  So, after exhausting every solution I could think of, I did what every sane man would do in my situation.  I decided it was time for me to show the door who was boss and hopefully do the least amount of damage to my house.
I stepped back from the door, put my 300lbs body into it with all my force…  and… nothing…  It didn’t budge…
Who knew those door locks actually work…
What do you do when you’re locked on the outside with no way in?
I’ll tell you what we did…I started brainstorming how I could keep from having to break a window and then I remembered, I had a hack saw out in our shed.  I went out back and got the hacksaw.  My entire family standing around me while I cut the lock off completely…
WE: We all know what it’s like to be locked out in life…We know what it’s like to feel the desperation of being locked out of a car or a house…
What do you do when you feel locked out from God?
Maybe you haven’t been living your life right or you used to be pretty good, but what at first was just a slow slip has just led to you feeling like there’s something missing with God
What most of us do when we feel locked out from God is we try and be better.bWe think that if we can just get our lives under control that we can fix the problem…

The problem is, that’s not how it works…

BIBLE STUDY: Ok, let’s get some terminology out of the way here…

That piece of you that feels locked out from God is called righteousness- doing right things

But how do you know what’s “right”

The bible calls this “the law”

The law says things like, “lying is bad”  “don’t murder people” “don’t take advantage of poor people”  “don’t call someone hot who isn’t your wife” ok, I made that last one up - but it’s true, Jesus s

OPENING ILLUSTRATION: So, this happens pretty regularly in my house.  I do something dumb, like say, embarrass my poor sweet wife because I’m trying to be funny as an extrovert - I know you’d never believe this, but I like people to like me.  I do something embarrassing and she in a gentle kind way says, “Hey, when you did xy&z, I really didn’t like it, I hate being put on the spot like that…”

And do you know what I want to do?
That’s right, I apologize like a good husband.  I tell her “What I’m hearing is that when I overstep the boundaries of what you are comfortable with in social situations it causes embarrassment and makes it feel like I don’t love you.  I’m very sorry for that and I will never do it again…”
    Ha, I wish that’s what I say…
You know what I say, I say this…… [be quiet with a stern look on face]
    Ugh, what’s that about…
Here’s what’s crazy, I know she’s right, I knew it the minute I did it that I had valued me being funny over her feelings and yet I did it…
    Here’s what’s even crazier -

    I know she’s right and I don’t want to admit it…

What’s that about?  Why is it so hard to face our failings?

    WE:

Maybe you’ve seen this in yourself before-your failed promises to your kids are almost expected at this point, but you can’t bring yourself to admit that you failed them-your 3-year-old has started yelling words at cars in traffic that make you blush…  You know where she heard it, but laugh it off - trying to hide your shame-you gossip about people at work constantly, but when someone calls you on the floor about it, you’re actually mad at them - you know you’re in the wrong, but to get called out like that ticks you off…

What is it about being “found out” that’s so hard for us?

I think, at least part of it, is that when we are “found out” it doesn’t match the image we hold in our minds of ourselves.

The image that we're a “good person”

Honestly, it can be devastating when you really become honest about the sin that lives in you…

TURN: I want to take you into a moment like this for this crowd that has gathered to hear the very first sermon Peter preaches ever..
Peter has been preaching to these people telling them that they saw Jesus - this is 50 days after Jesus was crucified.  The rumor has been going th

OPENING ILLUSTRATION:Man, one of my favorite things to do in this life is go to an escape room… I had some friends come into town a while back and we went to Countdown games.  They lock you in this room with a giant concrete castle and tell you if you don’t escape in an hour you will die.  I of course start immediately messing around and making jokes.  That is until it starts to get serious, about 45 minutes into it I start freaking out, running around like a chicken with my head cut off because all of the sudden “it counts”

TAKE THE TURNIn the past two years, we’ve all gone through a pandemicthat NO one wants to talk about anymore
We have sat on the edge of WWIII watching from afar, reading news stories - seeing atrocities in real-time over Twitter-I told some friends when Russia first invaded Ukraine how weird it was to see the war through the eyes of Twitter
We’ve lived through crazy price hikes, working from home, wearing masks changing jobs, moving, and a million other things
It has felt like, if ever, now was the time it countsbAnd everyone I know is trying to find ways to escape - we take trips (experiences)

    • we put our kids in crazy amounts of sports
    • hours spent reading news, swiping through tender, watching TikTok
    • some of us have even gone to some dark places, trying to escape

The problem is the things we run to for escape are only short-term fixes.  They all still leave us in a locked room.

How do you find the real fix for what your soul longs for?
Jesus found himself in front of a group of people who are looking for a fix - looking to escape-they are financially in a bind - just trying to make it day-to-day-they are oppressed, feel like they are constantly under someone else’s thumb-they are in need…
Jesus has just done something incredible - this crowd of 5,000 men - he has miraculously provided food for them - bread and fish
they see this as free Chic Filet - they follow him and ask him to give them more bread
They want quick solutions but it won’t fix their souls

-giving them food is like just dumping yourself into entertainment or your phone or more stuff to do - it fulfills for a little while but leaves you empty

This is where Jesus takes a weird graphic turn - listen to His response to their request for Him to give them bread - because He has said He is the bread of life He says this…
John 6:53-54 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh a
