About 25 mins from Victoria, British Columbia is where you'll find Hatley Castle.
In 1906, B.C.'s Lieutenant Governor, James Dunsmuir, purchased the property.
He and his wife Laura commissioned the renowned Canadian architect Samuel Maclure to build a 40-room mansion in the Tudor revival style that was popular in the Edwardian period.
James was often criticized as a public official, and the mansion became his escape when he retired.
James and his wife Laura had 12 children.
Their youngest son, Jim, was of fighting age when WWI broke out and lost his life on the RMS Lusitania when a German U-boat torpedoed the ship, and Jim’s body was never discovered.
The couple was heartbroken by the death of their son and spent the majority of their days mourning him. James died shortly after Jim and ever since then, there have been claims of strange things happening in the mansion.
