Today's true crime episode is from Warragul, Victoria. The Traditional Custodians of Country are the people of the Kurnai Nation

 

True crime podcasts or episodes usually focus on just murders and missing people but that's not all there is in the field of crimes. Haunted Hills started out exploring a theory that criminals kept the legend going to give them space to keep on distilling illegally, making illegal coins. It shares a little about the small towns, as Robert Kennedy once said "Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on."

 

While I encourage people to play judge and jury, we are not re-adjudicating these crimes

most of them occurred too long ago to be appropriate

however, these discussions create a contrast of values.

Warragul formed as a town in 1882. It also was built around the railway line. The land as the Kurnai Nations people would have known and utilised had large thick trees with their stone axes, their dwellings and communities were established on the hills (these details were published in the obituary of the first white settlers house and stores). The land was quite damp which created boggy conditions for hooved animals drawing carts that the settlers brought with them. Described by early journalists as a swamp and virgin bush wilderness. Brandy Creek was originally settled first as people pushed further south into the actual location of Warragul as the railway line was out through in 1878.

While Skidmore Missouri has many tragedies occurring there, there aren't many stories of hauntings that have become well known. So this episode mostly focuses on the stories surrounding Skidmore Missouri. Maybe for the residents of Skidmore, the tragedies are the most haunting things they experienced.

Skidmore Missouri is another town well known mainly because of a crime that occurred there. But then when you start looking at this small farming community with a post office, rail line and hotel - but a number of crimes have occurred there in modern times - we explore the historical crimes.

 

This episode also covers an overview of the infamous story and murder of Ken McElroy in 1981. The third episode about shooting in the main street of a small town.

Skidmore Missouri has a present-day population of 250 people which is really interesting and likely wouldn't be known so infamously if not for a murder that appears to have happened with most of the townspeople knowledge. We'll talk about that in the next episode.

But let's find out about this town, through the butcher, baker and candlestick maker or hotel keeper, nurses and townsfolk.

 

It is named after a surname of person - Marteny Skidmore who settled in the area around 1864 and then in 1880 and planned the town around the Nodaway Valley Railway depot and line. It appears from what I've discovered online is that it was mostly a farming community that had a railway to ship their produce to larger areas.

This episode will look at the people, history, crime and legends of Wilson's Promontory, Victoria - A tourist destination in Gippsland.

As with all history episodes we're going to meet the people because it's the regular people who make the town or National Park. As this is a National Park we're going to share as much history as we can of here and surrounding areas reliant on this area. Then the last part will be ghost stories.
