In 1922, a remote Bavarian farmhouse became the center of one of Europe’s most chilling unsolved murder cases.
The Hinterkaifeck farm looked normal from the outside. Smoke still rose from the chimney. The animals had been fed. The fire was warm. Life seemed to be continuing.
But inside, six people were dead.
Andreas Gruber, his wife Cäzilia, their daughter Viktoria, young Cäzilia, baby Josef, and the new maid Maria had all been brutally murdered. Even more disturbing, evidence suggested the killer may have remained on the property for days after the murders — feeding the animals, using the house, and moving through the farm as if nothing had happened.
Before the killings, strange warning signs had already appeared. Footprints in the snow led from the woods to the farm, but none led away. A Munich newspaper appeared that no one had purchased. House keys went missing. The family heard footsteps in the attic. The previous maid had even left because she believed the place was haunted.
