In this non-traditional episode, Myron introduces The Division 2 private beta. Tom isn’t quite sure what a looter-shooter is, so Myron takes some time to introduce the genre before diving into the game. Overall the beta played well. There were a few bugs, but the mechanics still felt solid and both Anna and Myron agree that it will be a title worth playing for hopefully a very long time.

From there the conversation turns back to the games as a service model. As long as companies continue making cool content players seem open to sticking around for the ride. Tom introduces the concept of using blockchain for special magic items that can be inherited or passed down over time gaining new properties. He’s creating a mythical named weapon for his new D&D character, and stories throughout time have embraced legendary named items.

Finally, the team revisits the Xbox Nintendo partnership and what the future might hold for those two companies and their relationship going into the future. Microsoft’s roots are in software service and Nintendo is fully embracing utilizing Xbox Live and crossplay. It’s a natural partnership given each company’s roots.

In this episode, Myron teases some upcoming console titles. With Crackdown 3, Anthem, and The Division 2 on the way, gamers are sure to be busy. Speaking of Anthem, Myron got in on the exclusive Beta (thanks to breaking his no pre-orders 2019 resolution) and he thinks it looks awesome. Anthem seems to have perfected the flying mechanic and now gamers everywhere will be able to fly around and shoot stuff like Iron Man.

Tom has spent more time with his Xbox and is starting to come around to the Game Pass and the concept of Xbox Live. Overcooked 2 may be in his future, but only if the price is right.

Finally, the crew discusses Episode 51 of their D&D campaign. For a change of pace, the team encountered a fair number of skill challenges this adventure rather than all combat. Tom seems more convinced than ever that a Minotaur is coming in the future, and Myron remains flummoxed at the team’s inability to stick with assigned names for evil villains.

It only took a week for Myron to break his New Year’s Gaming Resolution, he pre-ordered The Division 2 so he could participate in the Beta. Like all resolutions, it was never meant to be. Myron also explains why everyone should get an Xbox Gamepass (even though pre-ordering games kind of negates the purpose of the Gamepass).

Meanwhile, Tom finally made a console decision and the Xbox was the winner. But that may be a temporary situation as the Switch is still in heavy discussion for a possible future purchase.

Finally, the crew discussed their latest D&D adventure where they encountered a diabolical beast called a Behar. It’s their 50th D&D episode and so Tom has a surprise, he wants to retire Cog and build a new Warlord Minotaur badass. Will the other party members accept the change, will Tom ultimately decide to retire the beloved Tinker Gnome. Stay tuned to find out!

Over the holidays the HF&P crew played a lot of new games, and some oldies but goodies. We took some steps in Divinity 2: Original Sin as a foursome with some interesting results. Tom is an undead dude who can’t show his face, while Anna’s character is a knight who wears no pants and no helmet.

JT’s family still loves to bond over Cash ‘N Guns, but had less favorable results with the new Disney Villainous game. JT also discovered a nasty Nintendo paywall while trying to play Smash with Myron. To make matters worse they couldn’t chat natively on the Switch and had to fire up an Xbox party chat in order to communicate while playing Smash. All agree that Nintendo really has some work to do when it comes to online partying.

Speaking of consoles, Tom still hasn’t picked a winner. Will it be an Xbox or Switch? One thing’s for sure, it won’t be a PS4. Only time will tell whether Microsoft or Nintendo will win out. Survey says - buy both and be done with it!

Finally, the podcasters wrap by giving their gaming resolutions. If only all New Year’s resolutions were so much fun to make and keep.

In episode 13 Myron gives an update on the trials and tribulations of Darkest Dungeon. Apparently, total party kills are not the only thing to worry about as you lose a character’s gear when they die. Perma-death and lost magic items ironically turn Tom on to the idea of playing this impossible game

Meanwhile, JT discusses what makes a good family game in her household (hint Once Upon a Time is NOT on the list). Turns out when family members are super competitive and decent storytellers, Once Upon a Time turns into an under 2-minute speed round per game.

Finally, Myron teases what lies ahead in the next D&D game. It’s been a couple months since the party played their 4E campaign. JT, Tom, and Anna are all hopeful that epic loot, glory, and XP lie ahead.

In episode 12 the HF&P crew tackles important topics like hard copy vs. e-books, and the resurgence of vinyl (not really). Myron has been busy playing a new Switch game called Darkest Dungeon. It’s a hardcore turn-based strategy game where characters die all the time, so don’t get attached. Characters die from seemingly any cause, including fear, stress, insanity, heart-attack, and the usual causes of death like monsters, disease, traps...

Anna and Myron tried Bloodborne: The Card Game by CMON for the first time. Both agreed that the game could be fun with the right group of players who were more interested in having fun than crushing. Based on the video game, your goal in the card game is to bank the most blood tokens to win the game. Players have to strategically decide when to attack versus bank blood, or as Tom describes: “a twisted version of Sonic the Hedgehog.” While everyone starts with the same deck, as each player rests to bank blood tokens they are able to shop for new utility powers that increase attack power, add buffs etc. Ultimately players who can deal the most damage and strategically skip rounds to make deposits in the blood bank will win.

Finally, Tom reports that he finally beat the Rebel Challenge in Galaxy of Heroes. By far this was the hardest challenge for him so far. He shares some tips with JT on his final winning strategy, but JT doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about trying it again. Stay tuned to future episodes to find out if she manages to beat the challenge.

In episode 11 Myron and Anna kick things off by discussing Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game by Atlas Games. It’s a fun storytelling game that’s easily accessible for anyone who’s familiar with either Grimm’s Fairy Tales or the kid-friendly Disney versions. But beware if you are playing with cheaters or low-harmony players, as the game can take a cut-throat turn depending on who you have at the table!

Next Tom mentions that Destiny 2 is available for free, both Tom and Myron try to navigate the twists and turns online in order to secure the “free” download. JT questions whether Destiny 2 is any better than the original when it comes to story and 4-player parties, as the 3-player co-op handicap led the crew to quickly abandon playing the original campaign.

Finally, Myron and Tom take a turn into Advanced Dungeons & Dragons land, talk about jimmy-character strategies, and discuss realistic versus heroic fantasy campaigns.

We made it to episode 10! YAY! On this very special 10th episode the HF&P gang discuss new DLC in the land of video gaming, take a visit to Tom’s coaching corner, review a new dino-themed board game, and wrap things up with some dice talk.

Myron and Anna kick things off by reviewing the Surf ‘n’ Turf DLC for Overcooked 2, which adds 12 new kitchens, new chefs, new recipes, and a significant bump in difficulty. Kevin is back to torment you with impossible level design, and a new fourth star awaits should you be so bold to try it out.

State of Decay 2 also released the Daybreak DLC, which brings a Horde-like survival mode to the game. If you and up to 3 others can survive 7 waves of zombie hordes while protecting your technician from getting eaten alive, you can unlock new items in both Daybreak and the regular State of Decay 2 game. Is the ability to gain huge upgrades in characters and items an unfair advantage for those that are willing to pay extra for the DLC? Listen and decide for yourself.

Meanwhile, Tom has been busy playing Jurassic Park Danger! at home. The game sounds super challenging, but fun for those who love the original movie and cast of characters that you can play during the game. And yes, to answer the question, there is a “Hold onto your butts” card!

Finally, the crew discusses the joy (and sometimes extreme cost) of collecting dice for D&D. JT rolls the big guns with her solid metal dice, while Myron and Anna bring some semi-precious gems to the party. Tom has played so many games over the years that he has dice by the pounds galore!
