Have YOU heard?
December 30th was the first recorded New Year's Eve celebration in Babylon over 4,000 years ago! People rang in the new year long before fireworks or fancy parties. It was a religious festival dedicated to the gods. So, when you celebrate tonight, remember you're following a tradition that's thousands of years old!
The world’s longest hiccuping spree lasted for 68 years! A man named Charles Osborne started hiccuping in 1922 and didn’t stop until 1990. That’s a lot of hiccups! Talk about persistence!
December 30th, is National Bacon Day? It’s the perfect time to celebrate one of the most beloved breakfast foods. Bacon is so popular in the U.S. that it has its own holiday! Whether you prefer it crispy, chewy, or wrapped around asparagus, indulge in your bacon-loving heart!
It’s also National Bicarbonate of Soda Day. While it may not sound as exciting as bacon, this humble powder is used for baking, cleaning, and personal care. It's one of those everyday wonders that makes life easier!
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was born on this day in 1939—well, that’s when he first appeared in a song! This little reindeer has spread holiday cheer for decades.
December 30th falls just before New Year’s Eve, so let’s look at some lucky foods for the new year. In many parts of the U.S., black-eyed peas are a traditional New Year’s dish, symbolizing prosperity and good luck. Cook them in a stew or serve with cornbread for a full meal. In Spain, the tradition is to eat 12 grapes at midnight—one for each chime of the clock. If you finish them all, you'll have good luck for each month of the year. 💚🎤 #haveyouheard

The World’s First Public Radio Broadcast (1906): Reginald Fessenden made history by transmitting the first public radio broadcast. It included a speech, music, and Bible readings, marking the beginning of modern radio communication.
And speaking of fun, did you know the game of Candy Land was invented by a schoolteacher named Eleanor Abbott while she was recovering from polio? She designed it to entertain children in the hospital. To this day, it remains a family favorite for cozy holiday game nights!
Today is National Fruitcake Day! Love it or hate it, this dense holiday dessert has a long history, dating back to ancient Rome. Packed with dried fruits, nuts, and spices, fruitcake is often the star of Christmas traditions—and the occasional joke. But hey, if you’ve got one sitting around, today’s the perfect time to give it another try!
It’s also a great day to reflect on the Twelve Days of Christmas, which officially started on December 25. December 27 marks the Third Day of Christmas—so if you’re keeping count, this is the day for “three French hens.” Let’s hope no one actually gifts you live birds!
Have you ever heard of “Christmas pie”? Not a dessert, but an old English tradition where children would hide inside giant pies during holiday feasts to jump out and surprise guests. Sounds wacky, right? Thankfully, we’ve traded that for more practical traditions like pulling crackers or opening stockings.

Welcome to “Have YOU Heard?”
Did you know that December 26 is Boxing Day in many countries? The name doesn’t come from the sport but from the heartwarming tradition of giving “Christmas boxes” filled with gifts or money to servants, tradespeople, and those in need. In parts of Europe, December 26 is St. Stephen’s Day. According to legend, people used to gather food or money for charity while singing carols—an early version of Christmas caroling!
December 26 is also one of the busiest days for movies. Whether you’re catching a blockbuster or enjoying a classic holiday film, it’s the perfect way to unwind after the Christmas festivities.
National Day Celebrations December 26 is National Candy Cane Day! After indulging in all those peppermint treats during Christmas, today is a fantastic excuse to enjoy one more. Did you know the candy cane’s design—a shepherd’s crook and red stripes—symbolizes the nativity story? A sweet reminder of the season’s meaning.
It’s also a day for relaxation and reflection. Many families cherish this time together without the rush of Christmas preparations. Whether you’re playing board games, reading a book, or lounging in cozy pajamas, today is all about taking it easy.
December 26 marks the first day of Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African heritage, culture, and unity. Families light the Kinara and reflect on principles like community, creativity, and faith. It’s a beautiful way to honor traditions and values.
Here’s a fun trivia question to wrap things up: Did you know that the first recorded use of “Boxing Day” was in 1833? It started as a British tradition but is now celebrated in places like Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
And for something truly wild: In parts of Ireland, December 26 is also known as Wren Day. Traditionally, people would dress in costumes and parade through town carrying a fake bird to symbolize old Irish legends. Today, it’s all about music and fun rather than birds!
