Annie Easley was a woman who wasn't afraid to "pivot" her plans or work hard for her dreams. She worked as a "human computer" at NACA (which then became NASA) and then became one of the first computer programmers for the Program. But Annie was so much more than that... she was a bright spot who championed equal opportunities for all, she pushed for inclusion and respect for women, and she ALWAYS encouraged education.
The 2017 movie "Hidden Figures" gave us insight into the lives of some of the women who contributed to NASA... but I hope that this episode will give you a peek at Annie Easley. Any time that you see an electric car... remember that she is one of the contributors to that technology!

Today's amazing woman was known by many names... "the First Lady of Physics," "Queen of Nuclear Research," and even "the Chinese Madame Curie." Hopefully, after listening to an overview of her life and some of the contributions that she made to science, you'll remember her actual name forever. Dr. Chien-Shiung Wu was a passionate student, a patient researcher, and a confident advocate for women in STEM. She may have been "cheated" out of a Nobel Prize, but by working hard, she created a resume that even the most closed-minded people could not ignore. She wanted her discoveries and research to stand on their own merits... and never understood why it should matter that she was a woman.

August 30, 2023 Episode 27: Marva Collins
Marva Collins loved to play "school" as a child...but only if she got to be the teacher. After 14 years of frustration working as a full-time substitute teacher in the Chicago Public School System, she decided to start her own school. What Marva created was a space where children who were burdened with negative labels (black, poor, learning disabled, behavioral issues, stupid, incapable) were able to learn to believe in themselves, AND SO MUCH MORE. Marva was first celebrated, then vilified. But no one could ever question her commitment to her students and to her role as a teacher.
I read two books for this episode: Marva Collins' Way: Returning to Excellence in Education by Marva Collins and Civia Tamarkin and "Ordinary" Children, Extraordinary Teachers by Marva Collins. I read many news articles about Marva and also watched the video on YouTube called SUCCESS! The Marva Collins Approach from 1981.
